yeah see, that's one thing that kind of frustrates me. threadless DOES have cool outsider art on here. just because one thing that's out of the ordinary isn't accepted, doesn't mean that it's because threadless favors only cute stuff. just keep up your style, and realize that even if some voters don't dig your stuff, doesn't mean all of us like cute things. don't let the haters get you down.

WalkingAlong
WalkingAlong on Jan 26 '08
I agree, it is obviously creepy.
I don't see why you're so offended, that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Insulting voters is sort of an immature thing to do.
And the fact that it would scare 7th graders does affect people's vote; people wouldn't want to wear something that would upset children (and their parents) even if they themselves don't mind it.

Besides, you yourself claim to have bad taste, so you shouldn't be surprised if your designs are controversial... And you very clearly like the controversial... example: your icon... a girl eating a tarantula.
pickledbib
pickledbib on Jan 26 '08
don't let the negative comments get you down.
my 5 cents worth... to me this is a successful artistic design. it's created a lot of discussion & feedback and isn't art supposed to be subjective.

nice work!... plus I like how the boy kinda looks a lot like a descendant of the beatles and ET.
Jassie
Jassie on Jan 26 '08

Your art is good, though your personality is bad.
hasbadtaste
hasbadtaste on Jan 26 '08
walkingalone, i disagree that it is 'obviously' creepy. i guess it is creepy, it must be because i can't deny the feedback i've gotten, and the general consensus is that it is wholly terrifying. but its hard for me to say that is "obviously" creepy because i dont see it. I think its pretty adorable, actually. before subbing this i never thought of this illustration as being scary at all. turns out i am just weird...and i guess i'm ok with that.
i'm not really offended by most of the comments (freaky, creepy, etc). I'm just a little baffled by them because I guess my point of veiw of what is or isn't scary is a lot different.
valorandvellum
   valorandvellum on Jan 27 '08
Your illustration is superb and you have a wicked style. The thing is, I don't think this particular design really works on a shirt. It would be great for an illustration for a magazine or as a poster, but a top heavy composition on the bottom of a shirt just isn't working. I agree with those who said it needs something else to balance it out. That, or it needs to be on a darker colored tee so the top heaviness isn't so obvious.

You clearly have a lot of talent so don't be discouraged by people's critiques. Just keep in mind the functionality of a shirt and how it will look once on a body. :-)
hasbadtaste
hasbadtaste on Jan 27 '08
Jassie, I dont think theres anything wrong with what i said. Squirt13 is 13 years old and likely in the seventh grade, he said he didnt know anyone who would wear this. My comment was apropos. BTW, he also said some pretty jerky things about my work, so if I want to be a bitch I will. I don't dig unprovoked rudeness.
hasbadtaste
hasbadtaste on Jan 27 '08

ianrose
ianrose on Jan 27 '08
I really don't see how it's so terribly creepy. I agree that it's more of an illustration than a classic graphic design like a lot of the shirts, but it's a brilliant illustration, and I think there's room for illustrative style here. If this doesn't get printed, I'd like to see more shirts with different subjects but in this style. Reminds me of Dave McKean's illustrations, which I love. Good luck.

olie!
   olie! on Jan 27 '08
I also think you should sub more of them if you are doing a series anyway. Just try your luck. I used to say a lot that some things just "don't work on a shirt" and although I still agree that some things just don't I find myself saying that less and less because I think just because you wouldn't normally see something of a particular style on a shirt doesn't mean it wouldn't look damn good on one.
I really like this particular style you did, and really hope you keep subbing. If you get a bad score don't let it get you down. I really like all the negative space, but I do agree with sonmi that maybe it just needs something a LITTLE TINY bit extra, like maybe a bug up in the corner that he would be looking at or something.

haha, don't take it personally hasbadtaste! My 'Child & his...' design was dubbed creepy by everyone too!
Although it was I 'spose!

I reckon, like someone said above, that although your picture is doubtlessly very well done, I'm not sure if it'd make a good tee design. Or at least one voted by the public. There's no catch, nothing witty to grab on to. Which I feel is the go on here.
emem
emem on Jan 27 '08
This is beautifully done. I don't know why so many people find it so creepy, or why they view that as a bad thing anyway. Lately the voters of Threadless have seemed to favour designs with cute little penguins in them rather than artwork that is truly well done. That said, I don't imagine this will print, but I wish you the best of luck and you have my vote.

I don't think that the sides represented here can be so simply divided into those afraid of it vs. those who love it. I would hang this on a wall or buy a magazine featuring it. I wouldn't wear it. I think it would look good in a High Fructose spread, but it's awkward and poorly placed on a shirt. I love Mark Ryden, for instance. Plenty of his stuff would look lousy just tossed on a tee. There is a place for tees with creepy or unsettling subject matter on this site. It just depends on the voters at the time and whether the design is compelling on more than one level. Keep posting. I like your stuff enough to want to see more.

you really got some skillz, but I wouldn't see myself wearing that for a shirt, I would love to see that as a poster or could be a cd cover, but if you could add some more elements, like a flowery background, or extended vines, crawling up to the shirt, that would probably look more of a shirt design, just keep it up, make more designs with your own style =D

You are a fine artist, hasbadtaste. I personally find the design to be wonderful and have rated it accordingly. However, I think your vision lends itself better to the canvas than the mass-produced shirt. Great art is often controversial, so don't fret that some people find it creepy. The same has been said about Picasso, Dali and Warhol.

I don't give a flying freaky-deak if this is creepy or not, it's just a very well-done portrait (the lighting in the "person's" hair is exceptionally illustrated) that has zero value to me as a t-shirt. As a piece of art surrounded by a wooden frame, sure, but not as a tee design does this do one thing for me. But that's just me, obviously a lot of people look for different things in shirt. Good luck with it.

CopyKill on Jan 29 '08
i guess the creepy part is the photo/paint combination.. i beliebe if you painted it all instead of fitting in a photo-nose and mouth, this would look a lot less frankenstein's.

This is great work - I'd like it see it maybe mixed with some line art or something as a contrast. It just seems like it needs more tom be complete.

oops - didn't read all the way through. The crawly-thing was step in the right direction, it just seems too disconnected. Type that's kinda been mashed/edited into a collage could look cool, too.

I hope you keep subbing stuff like this, though.

here's my two cents. i didn't read all of the 178 comments before mine, so someone may have beat me to my point, but here goes.
i worked at a screen printing shop, so i know the process fairly well. i just think that the screen printing process won't do this illustration justice. you have a great style, and your attention to detail is marvelous – however, i just don't know how much of that richness will get lost if it's screen printed on fabric. my guess is quite a bit. nice work, though.

very refreshing style (reminds me of Eric Carle books, the Hungry Caterpillar) but maybe you could steer your talents w/ different designs/subject matter?

The execution is so competent and I believe that that's why folks are saying that they find it disturbing. It has enough realism about it that makes the deformity / skin condition / hairyness a concern where it would not be if this was a cartoon.
Just my two pennorth.
