About my design
by pyr4lis
This is for the Love's Revolution competition.

The title the hangman comes is indicative of Big Media in that they will go after anyone. They feed on tradgedy, death, lies, and war and then colorize and fragment the truth to create the message they want, and mask away what they don't.

In this view... the tourture of the hangman comes from the victim hanging upside down by the toe rather than by the neck. The viewers must be "entertained" as long as possible so the media will then drag a juicy bit of news out as long as long as they can..

The submission is created with 5 bright and bold colors set on a black tee. The revolutionary accent would be the incorporation of a Metallic black to white gradient using threadlesses new gradient printing ability.

sorry if im wrong, but i dont think you can do gradients

Thanks maltz :D I really appreciated your comments during the critique process.

And uh.. I dunno what to say to icepyro considering how just this morning you were complaining on the blogs about how in your "young foolishness" you sub'd a design that you thought sucked. People who live in glass houses don't go throwing stones. You may not like my gradient use but that doesn't mean it is done wrong.

Woah...it's like the T1000 from the Terminator series gone wild! I really tried to see the concept you described of what your submission means....and I failed. And im mad at myself. lol. Best of luck just the same!

I like the concept... & irocko and noodlegirl look quite happy in the tee.

for me, knowing about the hanging/media info is unnecessary in appreciating this as the design looks good on the shirt and can also be easily interpreted as a tribute to the human body

pyr4lis on Jan 16 '08
lol thanks guys! I'm terrible at explaining things so for those of you who can't interpret my rambling explanation it's not that important! :D

Oh! And I just realized I must have typed an html symbol or something because my last paragraph in my first post is missing....

Anyway, the human body illustrations are based on pencil sketches done by my bf, with his permission of course! :D He's a big fan of human anatomy art.

when you have to write a paragraph explaining the concept behind your design it usually means it's not conveying it's message well.

all the different gradients really hurt my eyes. i have to agree with Icepyro and say that this looks really (unpurposely) naively done. it would have looked better if you used one gradient throughout all the small shapes. as it is, all the gradients are combating with eachother. there are just too many of them going different ways, and ends up looking really shabby.

when you have to write a paragraph explaining the concept behind your design it usually means it's not conveying it's message well.

Giving the voters some concrete explanation for how the title relates to a more abstract design doesn't mean that at all.

pyr4lis on Jan 16 '08
Well Ginetteginette... and anyone else... the gradient was done the way it was done on purpose it looks the way that I as the designer intended it to look. Had I wanted a smoother more 'friendly' gradient I could have done it but I didn't want that look. If that in the eyes of threadless is the difference between printing and no I will change it.. but I would prefer it to stay the way it is.
ginetteginette
ginetteginette on Jan 16 '08
all i said was that in my view, this is a bad use of gradient. criticism isn't definite, you don't have to change anything as soon as someone points something negative out.
take it or leave it,
it was only MY opinion.
pyr4lis
pyr4lis on Jan 16 '08
I don't intend to change it.. threadless themselves would be the only ones who I would do so for.

Honestly though, I just don't like it being insinuated that just because I didn't do something in the usual way means that I don't know how, or that it is wrong. I'm a professional designer and know how to do gradient, doing it this way was a concious choice.

I think Icepyro meant he thought you werent allowed to use gradients, not that you are bad at doing gradients.
I really like the coloured section.

im backing up a second.... going back the the second comment made, the one by icepyro, i THINK they just meant they didnt think gradients were allowed, not that you were not skilled at using a gradient or that it was done wrong...

... besides i think the gradient looks awesome, so i cant imagine someone thinking it was done wrong...

...nicely done

Thank you! It didn't occur to me that it was possible that he ment that. Especially after ginetteginette's comment. But yeah I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. :D

Don't mind ginetteginette's comments. Most of her comments tend to be overcritical.

I like this- and I think you've placed it perfectly on the shirt.

I really like the idea of someone hanging by their toe, and that's cool how it relates to what you think of Big Media. I could not see that is what it was until I read your description.

I really like the design, but maybe there'd be a way to accentuate the hanging by the toe part more? I wouldn't know how to do it, but you probably have more design skills than me. The gunmetal grey color you use for the toe hanging is awesome, but maybe mute the other colors just a LITTLE bit so it stands out more?

Hope this helps, and good luck.
