awesome, but the one thing that sticks out a bit to me is that the trumpet is too big relative to the soldier and the trombone.

Not to mention the six foot guitar.

The inattention to scale makes this look far too clipart-ish and detracts from what you're trying to communicate.

Here's an example of the theme done well:

MP(3)

You Are Doing It Wrong(tm).

Are you trying to say Our Boys don't know how to use their 'quipmints?

If you were more in touch with your inner Band Camper you'd have a dude with a Tuba pretending it was a mortar.

Put the instruments back to their original scale, and actually attached to the soldiers' mouths, and you might have a winner.

How else is the sound coming out, FFS? Batteries?

If you had a two-tone brass three-piece taking out the rock guitarists and that damn turntablist ... then you might have a shirt ...

cool design, but two things that bother me:

1. it's reminiscent of a previous threadless design

2. it has nothing to do with the theme of the contest, other than it's music related.

music and army is too common nowadays... and they've already printed mp4 or something like that?... I'll 3 this b/c it's pretty well done and 3's esentially neutral.. might want to make trumpet smaller tho it's annoying me...

Sorry man, but you can't just take MP(3), do it worse and expect it to be printed.

6ft. guitars are also funny.

I usually hate it when people say "boo hiss boo same theme been done before" and all that crap, but I have to say the same here. You may not have known about MP(3) before this, but if you had maybe you'd have noticed this isn't offering much else?

It's a good illustration, however you've been outdone.

would appreciate if you could say something more original, even if it's something bad!

There are a few things that seriously bug me about the design:

1) The trombone must be on his lips.

2) The clef needs to be a bass clef if it's directly in front of the trombone.

3) The second person in the group on the right shouldn't also have a trombone. Stick with a theme for each side, so that it looks like it's two musical genres going to war.

4) Make the guitarist look like he gives two shits about what's going on. He seems like he's just slapped in there.

Now that seem like a lot, but in reality, I really like the concept. I'd say fix it up and resub it, because it will score higher, and will have a much much higher likelihood of being printed (in my opinion). for now, 3. Fix it, and it's a $5.
eyedewtwo
eyedewtwo on Jan 10 '08
By the way, the similarity to MP(3) doesn't bother me in the least. In fact, I like this one more. Just thought you might like a few encouraging remarks in that regard.
JoeMonster
JoeMonster on Jan 10 '08
thanks! i really appreciate you taking the time to give a rational critique on it. for better or for worse, i'm here to learn from my own mistakes and try to get better with each submission. getting printed is just the icing on the cake!

best of luck to you!

i like the concept here WAY more than mp(3), honestly. I just don't like the execution too much for many of the reasons listed above. With a more detailed and corrected sub, I have a feeling this would go places, but perhaps not on this site. Try subbing it to the other dozen contest sites and see what happens for you, because the way these army dudes are using their weapons against one another i really enjoy.

Maybe have one of the army guys on the left giving the devil sign with one hand, and maybe have the army dude struck by the music turned into more psychedelic colors and turned a bit hippy, as in the music changed his perception about war and how he should live life, as the other soldiers are charging in behind him not effected by the music yet. Good luck with this,
JoeMonster

btw, i own one of your slogan tees... it's freaking awesome!
Gustavar
Gustavar on Jan 12 '08
Not a huge fan of the placement, but still sweet.
Starfish Reverie
Starfish Reverie on Jan 13 '08
The concept is far more dynamic than MP(3).

But it has its problems. Namely, the scale of the instruments. Superlongnecked guitar is bothering me. And trombone boy needs to actually be playing his instrument.

However, t's still in the vein of MP(3), which drastically reduces its chances of getting printed.

But then again, that didn't stop the bajillion of birdsonpowerlines/musicstaff submissions being printed.
JoeMonster
JoeMonster on Jan 14 '08
thanks! i don't expect to get printed... the number of feedback i get here is much more valuable to me!

trumpetplaya on Jan 14 '08
Well I think this is really cool.

If you would change things it would be putting the trombone up on his shoulder more and have his hands on the next bar down, and maybe rotate the trombone so that the mouthpiece is closer to his face rather than his elbow.

Maybe more definition on the outlines so it captures the eye more, especially the one on the far right with the guitar that way it doesn't look like he's just there doing nothing..

Also it took me a few minutes to figure out what was falling off the guys head. It looks like another head...not his hat.

I'm a trumpet player and I still like it even with out changes. I would buy it. Good job.

JoeMonster on Jan 14 '08

WilsonThePirate
WilsonThePirate on Jan 14 '08
well I would just rather see them holding the brass instruments correctly or at least have it scaled better. having them be held at the end like that isn't seen as "smooth" I agree with trumpetplaya except I like how there isn't more definition, it fits this design better.

Scale isn't the issue, but how they hold the instrument: this is my biggest problem with it (I play trombone, and seeing it held like that just irks me...)

Not to get nit-picky, but trombone plays in base clef by the way : P

so it needs a little work, but, despite mp3's design, i like the brass, and would buy it once it's touched up with these critiques.
JoeMonster
JoeMonster on Jan 14 '08
if i wanted to make everything technically correct for the purists, i would not have done this piece in the first place.

my intention is to approach the instruments as someone who has no knowledge of using them for their original purpose, thus i intentionally made some of these held the wrong way. it's like giving a pieceful instrument like a trombone to a soldier, but the soldier does not see it as a trombone. he only sees it as a weapon of destruction.

i'm sorry if i had offended anyone here. i'll say it again... it's done for fun and it's only a t-shirt!
