*Well, the barcode means "a grim future" because of a complicated (?!) numerical cryptogram I created and yes, they are watching and listening. So, beware, the future is grim and full of generic, boring and meaningless t-shirts unless we join the REVOLUTION NOW! Special thanks to Munch, Orwell and Huxley...

the scream idea is everywhere
feandora
feandora on Jan 07 '08
It is? This exact idea? Well, I suppose it is not as intelligent or unique as a sandwich car, a tree or a bird. My mistake to not just slap together a couple of scribbles and be so concerned with art and public awareness...

By the way, although both are based on the Scream (Munch painted 4 versions and made a lithograph for print-the Scre-Emo is based on the Lithograph) by Munch, The Scr-Emo and my tee have completely different themes and styles.

Mine deals with the silent scream of an individual in the realization of the changing world. A world that, everyday, resembles a little more the worlds of 1984, Brave New World, We, Oryx and Crake and many other dystopias created by geniues of the last century.

Google Zeitgeist the Movie for more information on how the world is changing. Also Google HR 1955. If you're not screaming yet, you should be.

I don't really understand the barcode meaning a "grim future". If it had something like 6s all on the barcode, I would understand it a little better.

I rather like the barcode idea, and I definitely appreciate the sentiment. Maybe rework this with less Munchian background? The Scream theme will still be recognizable from the figure.

There are barcode generators online that will let you encode letters (readable below) that eliminates the not-obvious cryptography. ...remember that almost 50% of the shirt's viewers (in the wild, not necessarily on Threadless) will be of below average intelligence. ;o)

I'm sorry feandora if you took what I said as an attack! Lord....calm down! I was just mentionning that there was already something done inspired by a Munch's painting, so I would be surprised if there were 2 printed...
god, some people just get offended so easily... sorry

Ok nice idea but the cameras and the planes seem just sort of thrown in there. I really like the barcode on the sleeve. it is unfortunately the strongest aspect of the design.

Not offended at all, I do have problem with over-clarifying myself though! Which is what I am about to do again! I felt the need to explain the theme after a couple comments, that's all...

I worked very hard on this design and yes, I was slightly upset that the damn sandwich cars are getting 5's and my hard work is not as much appreciated. :(

Besides, without any understanding of what it means, it is pleasing to the eye and I would wear it.

On the other hand, to expand on Keter's comment:
after all it is the average people that I wanted to get through to, as the well-read and wise are already aware of the seriousness of the state of the world. Also if people with high IQ are my only target market, I would not sell many tees either... ;) So, next time, I will make sure to keep the design simple enough for all...

Oh, well. If I create ANY interest on this issue in people that have never even thought about it, that is an achievement. If it were to win and people wore it (they'd look great in it), that would be the icing on top. :) Thanks for all your comments even the ones that you thought I was offended by.

i say this CONSTRUCTIVELY, ok? don't get defensive on me too (jk!)

i dont think the camera's on either side of the screamer feel incorporated into the design. They more feel just kinda tagged on.

The black on the pyramid is strange and sticks out, because it is the only black on the image, the rest only goes as far as grey.

Using the screamer is kind of a cliche move because it is SUCH a well known image. Use something that you made up! Originality is big points.

I'm not crazy about the stuff inbetween the screamer himself and the pyramid. I understand that it is supposed to be reminiscnet of the background on the painting, but something more related to the theme for a background would have made the design stronger.

And FINALLY, the glow in the dark bar code rules. Im totally on board with that.

Appreciate that people will take the time to comment on your designs and try and help you improve! Don't get defensive or childish, and don't talk down at us!

I like the concept, but Munch's THE SCREAM is used EVERYWHERE. I'm sick of it. But I DO appreciate the work you put in and the overall aesthetic. And like I said, love the concept.

HeroStatus, thanks, I do appreciate constructive criticism such as yours. Please read my second way too loooong comment that explains it all.

I really did not mean to look down at anyone or be arrogant. It is somewhat hard to set a tone while writing AND English is not my first language. So if I got across that way I apologize.

Everybody has talents and strengths, we all come from different backgrounds and upbringing, and of course we all have different tastes. Can we just make up now? :)

This is such a great artistic way to express the general feeling of terror and helplessness about all the Orwellian stuff out there today. Love it, and even if it is ubiquitous, The Scream works because it's so well known.

Some of the comments about this design are completely misplaced and out of line. We're supposed to give compliments or constructive criticism about the art--and not simply judge the artist's idea. For those of you who have stated that this design is "old" or "everywhere", please tell me, do you think people should stop painting mountains just because a million other people already have? Or should Threadless stop making teeshirts since everyone on this site probably already has one?

You know, sometimes the oldest ideas are the best ones.

sweetie... i love munch's the scream.... i'm not on board with the big brother's watching thing that inspired you but if that is what it took to inspire you, so be it!!! i'd buy it just for the scream reference (and even though there other shirts with that reference i dont care... LOL) i give it a 4

i agree with weaselmouse2, more constructive criticism, less "that's a lame design", i'm guilty of it, i'm sure most of us are. i personally think "the scream" is pretty cool. i say lose the cameras, planes and dull down the front face of they pyramid and it's a keeper! $4!

Thanks again! By the way the black difference is due to a stupid adjustment layer I forgot apparently, so it is very easy to change!

It looks really clip-arty

I lurv your colors, but like others have said, sadly, it's been done.
I know it's different, but at the same time, it's the same.

The cameras and the planes just stick out too much. They don't really... mesh well.

Barcode is awesome though.

I agree with most of the constro crit already stated above on this one. Although i never tire of a well-done idea incorporating the scream or the che shirt pic. nice idea, but the design could use some work blending the disparate thoughts together.

Not that this looks bad - in fact, it looks pretty nice to me - I love Munch's artwork.

It's just that they've already printed The Scre-Emo, and henceforth it's VERY unlikely that they'll print another..

So it gets a $3 because, to the general public, this has already been done before.

I like the Scream use, but agree with HeroStatus about the cameras. I totally get the bar code-- would it clutter the design to put it one the scream figure? Nice touch with the pyramid.

I dig the barcode, the rest dosn't do a whole lot, I feel it could be done better, but real scannable barcodes as a theme for a shirt would be a good one in my rather worthless opinion.
