I thought of that too.

And i actually had a series of ideas.

I have many mexican friends and I´m just picking on them.

Mexican't... turn on a light? Meh -- you need a better punch line... or you could do the border thing, but have it as Mexican't (cross the border) and American -- and have the stereotypical US tourist from Mexico. But maybe that's a little too political...
Juanmanimation
Juanmanimation on Jan 03 '08
Yeh i think it´s too political, and i I said it´s meant to be inoccent, not offensive.

isn't this a joke from "once upon a time in mexico" with johnny depp?

lovemyshirts

it went:

(johnny depp to the mexican fellow) "Are you a MexiCAN? or are you a MexiCAN'T?" said while he was challenging him to do something he didn't want to do...

Yes! It is a Joke Johnny Depp throws on that movie, you guys got it!

and I thought....it would be cool to have it on a shirt,

with no direct visual reference to the movie

"Once upon a time in Mexico"...which (despite Johnny´s acting) sucked!.

Do you go to everyone's blogs who writes a comment that doesn't sit well with you? Your little Mexican is cliche, the text is hard for people to understand based on other comments and it's just a bad pun swiped from a bad movie and portrayed in a bland fashion. And before you say anything about how you're also Mexican or Hispanic or whatever (I'm assuming you are based on your name and your design, sorry if I'm wrong) and that I've got a stick up my ass well I live in the Southwest and a big chunk of my family is Hispanic and many of them are from Mexico so I do *kind of* know what the hell I'm talking about. I know plenty of people that would be simply offended by seeing a Mexican portrayed in that garb as it's the same garb white media moguls would dress Mexican media characters in before deriding them for laziness, drunkenness, etc (for example, in those Speedy Gonzales cartoons I mentioned earlier). I hope this adequately clarifies things for you.

lovemyshirts on Jan 04 '08
my gosh...

so much anger and soap-boxing, c'mon you guys, it is a cartoon, it is Supposed to be a stereotype. Guilty laughter is the best laughter, isn't it?

Sure people would be offended, but someone somewhere is offended by anything! I love the cowboys and indians shirt that is already for sale here at Threadless and that is pure stereotype humor, but it is completely innocent fun, mocking the images of our youth and culture...we've got to releive the pressure somehow--yes?
Juanmanimation
Juanmanimation on Jan 04 '08
I already explained Miss Kookaberry, what the intention of my comment on her blog was.

it wasnt offensive it was a simple question, and she responded quite offended.

What is the best way then ,Miss Kookaberry ,to portray a Character that says mexico all over?...

A shaved man on a Bussiness suit carrying a briefcase?

A man with a striped shirt ,a beret ,and a baggette under his arm?,Or simply a person with a pair of jeans and a t-shirt?

And no mam´I am not Mexican ,although as I said before most of my best friends are .(and I do not mean .of mexican descent. but mexicans that live in Mexico).

I am Latin indeed and I live in SouthAmerica.
Kookaberry
   Kookaberry on Jan 04 '08
Maybe portray the architecture like the Spanish missions or something in the background? Why do you need to put *anyone* in stereotypical garb?
Juanmanimation
Juanmanimation on Jan 04 '08
Now that you "sound" more calmed,

we can discuss some things in a reasonable way.

I also think stereotypes can be bad, but if it reffers to something nice and "typical" (of the culture and customs perhaps),that´s valid!

I am Colombian myself, and i´ve been a victim of the ignorance and stupidity of some stereotypes....yes, that one youre already thinking...Druglord...Narco Trafficant...and it hasnt been fun, since I do not even know a single Drugdealer.

Now trust me ,mexicans feel very proud of their beautiful culture as well as us Colombians, for example

theres nothing wrong on showing a man with a "Sombrero mexicano", a "poncho" and a pair of "Alpargatas" ,its a cartoon image of the traditional peasant clothing, part of the Folklore of that country.

So don´t sweat it, and thanks.

Hmm... I think the biting political satire route is your way to go on this one, Juanmanimation. In my humble opinion, the reason why political shirts often fail on Threadless is that the visual "payoff" often does not allow the viewer to be both critiqued *and* partake in the satire/offer visual appeal. They are too heavy handed for a medium that requires rapid visual comprehension -- I get stopped by a lot of people when I wear my Threadless shirts, but I don't think any of the interactions have gone over two minutes (and I was being rung up at a register for that one).

That's why political cartoonists are few and far between. The guy who does the cartoons for the Christian Science Monitor seems to get his work to pay off concisely.

How could it be racist...I am far from being mexican, but I am Hispanic too.

I only ask you guys to understand, even though there are a few of you who wont probably get it, this is not racism, and Its not meant to be .

I´ve written it three times since the very first comment now.
DoSomething
DoSomething on Jan 06 '08
Everyone's racist, if you really want to get deep. I wouldn't say this is race-ist, but most definitely racially insensitive. I mean, clearly not all Mexicans wear sombreros and ponchos. My buddy Emilio sure as hell doesn't (not all the time, at least). While such cliché imagery would move the modern person to believe that person is Mexican, how do we know? Can we see that the bone structure of the face is reminiscent of the Aztec or Mayans, or maybe even a mix with the Spaniards? Does the person's skin color and texture match that of their ancestors? Maybe this person is indeed a drunk, short white guy coming home from an overplayed Cinco de Mayo party.

In short, this wasn't a wise idea. Considering the punk band "AmerICan't" came way before this (not to mention Yellowcard's song American't, among other pop-culture usages of adding an apostrophe t on the end of can), it's also nothing new or original.

Oh, and there's nothing political with this piece. Sorry. It's just plain offensive. Now, if it were addressing illegal immigration or same-sex marriage, maybe then it would be political. Until then, it's just a half-baked idea.

As you can see from the torch weilding hordes, shirts that depict any particular race of people in an unflattering light will be met with the harshest of opinion. It's just best to not go there even if you happen to be a Mexican yourself.

Wow, people are blowing this way out of proportion. I'm French but I don't get all upset because people draw people in a beret and a striped shirt carrying around a baguette. Sure, not everyone dresses like that...but at some point they did. And it immediately identifies the culture...the basics for any cartoon.

this is another case of an innocent design bein misinterpreted?

its not reaaaaaaaaaaally offensive if the critics themselves jus accept the guy as a cute mexican/human!!!...but it can be taken as insensitive as well at the same time...to see similarly confusin controversies...see my blog:'design and emotion/less?'
