i like the layout of it on the shirt, any smaller and i think it would be mistaken for just a heart

Wow. This is one of the few hearts I would wear. I have to listen to the record now to get the song out of my head. $5

id like it more if the design was over the entire shirt instead of the heart shape, but maybe that's just me. the bottom is fine but the top kind of bothers me. i like the overall idea though

I love that exactly as it is. Really subtle and unusual. Any smaller and it would totally detract from the effect

I remember my mom singing "Norwegian Wood" when I was little...I had NO idea what it was about, but it's a pretty song...

I am loving this shirt. I'd definitely buy it for a guy friend of mine who would love it. :D

In person, I hope the design is more readily identifiable. That said, I think the design is beautiful. All those lines that comprise the woman's hair is supposed to be a fanciful take on the rings of a tree, right? This is awesome.

I think smaller would be better. Although bigger seems to give it a bit of a tie dye effect. Torn.

I adore this shirt, the title seals the deal completely... Probably because I'm a Beatles fanatic... If this is not printed, then my life will be incomplete. Everything about it is perfect. I love the colors as well.

I really hope this gets printed. $5 all the way.

And as far as the "tracing" issue is concerned, it's not exactly the same. And what's wrong with doing it as an ode to the artist? As long as the person acknowledges where they got the idea from, then I have no problem with it. I mean, look at all of the Rene Magritte inspired stuff that comes up on this site, that's just one example anyway...
winkelmander
winkelmander on Nov 10 '07
I have no problem with famous artworks inspiring people, but I'm a bit disappointed that someone actually traces something instead of making his own version of the figure. Then it doesn't matter if he made her naked and drew a heart around it, to make a 'new' image.

But because the girl is traced, Threadless probably can't legally print this due to image rights.

Well, and yeah, he should've at least said he was 'inspired' by Mucha. Because now it's like he is presenting the image of the girl like it's his own creation.

(well, blahblah, I don't want to make a big thing out of this and debate it endlessly. I just think it was a bit lame and not too smart, especially after the whole Todd Goldman episode a while ago..)

Bramish
   Bramish on Nov 11 '07
I'd much prefer this without the girl.

I wouldn't say tracing only the outline of the girl from another painting and then using it in a completely different design was stealing, but you maybe should have pointed out where you got the figure shape from.
winkelmander
winkelmander on Nov 11 '07
Yeah I don't know if I would call it stealing either. Like I said I'm not saying all this to start a witch-hunt or anything.

But then again, if he would've traced part of someone elses design here on threadless, people would probably be upset and call it stealing.
And that's not any different from tracing Mucha I guess, but somehow it seems worse. Huh?! ;)

its actually not a trace, here is another example of the same pose. Geez, I didn't know you could copyright a pose people

http://www.bmasse.com/Images/Dylan_Simon_fxd.jpg
iDanSimpson
iDanSimpson on Nov 12 '07
I'll go ahead and argue this one:

http://www.bmasse.com/Images/Dylan_Simon_fxd.jpg

is quite obviously a plagiarized version of

http://students.ou.edu/W/Nicholas.J.Wojcik-1/mucha.jpg.

Then you plagiarized it, as well. Two wrongs do not make a right, my friend. If you would have taken this pose from an anatomy textbook, that's another story, but you borrowed material from someone else and didn't cite it.

Threadless is most likely tired of dealing with cease and desist letters... Trust me, this will not be a print.
Smitty McGillicutty
Smitty McGillicutty on Nov 12 '07
well, if it is too close of an image to both Masse and Mucha then I apologize. I had no intention of making this a copy and although I still don't believe that it is I understand the community's point and ask that if you are disturbed or upset by this image simply vote low for it. I was not trying to pull the wool over any ones eyes and claim stolen art as my own. I just wish there had not been such a problem with this in the past, now the entire Threadless community gets up in arms over everything.

I was not trying to pull the wool over any ones eyes and claim stolen art as my own.

I know, I know.. you did try and make a new image out of it. Maybe you didn't know that you cannot commercialy use someone elses image (yes, even if traced I believe. I think it would've been ok-ish if you just drew an image after Muchas work. But photoshop says you traced, sorry!)

And if you didn't know all that, well, everybody makes mistakes and now you know this would be considered plagiarism. And hopefully not do it again.

i vote to keep it large.

my two cents on the plagiarism issue: you can't copyright a chord progression, and you can't copyright a pose. fine by me.

while the tshirt itself is beautiful, it's disappointing that the work is plagiarised rather than appropriated. Sorry!

The design is good, but did not note on the T-shirt, you should change the color or design of the shirt

mad cat on Nov 13 '07
I was gonna argue this one too. But that pose (and it is a ripe off of mucha) is a much used clip art as well. A lot of mucha's stuff got filtered into clip art. I think that the originality of the placement is marred by the use of such a well known pose and image. Re work it a bit and bring it back.
iDanSimpson
iDanSimpson on Nov 13 '07
people... just because one person got away with stealing another person's design (clip art... what have you...) doesn't mean it's OK. original ideas work best.

rework it, and i can dig. the original portions of this design are my favorite parts, really (the wood, biiig print utilizing belt-print techniques).
