it definitely falls into a niche but its a very original idea which makes it interesting.

Keep the text. It's subtle enough that it doesn't detract from the design, and without it, very very few people are going to get the joke.

I'd keep the text justification as is. As is, they appear as halyards or yard stands for the signal flags.

That is pretty funny. Myself I am on the fence with the text. I wouldn't have understood the jock without the text but now that I do get it might be funnier without it.
