wildmustard on Nov 02 '07
The basic elements of this design would make a really sweet shirt, but the urine, fart + flies, and bird poop really detract from the designer's ability.

There are many places where a little girl would not wear a top, or any suit at all, and not cause comment, but in the United States, little girls lose that freedom after age 2 or 3. The Threadless community seems to be very international, but I'm not sure a topless little girl could get printed (cf Disney's bowdlerization of the Little Mermaid).

I'd like to see this re-worked; the style and colors are lovely.

I don't know about that. This girl is wearing a urine-stained mini g-string that barely covers her little girl parts, which is a far cry from the fairly sanitized, innocent-looking backside of the Coppertone Girl.

It makes it more disgusting because you'd think a woman would have a little more decency and couth. If it's a little girl, then at that age there's no difference between the chest of a girl and that of a boy. I'm guessing she's meant to be extremely young since she's had an accident, so I don't see the problem with her bare chest. If I saw a little girl at the beach like that I wouldn't think twice about it.

Spam69
Spam69 on Nov 04 '07
Chris Morris lampooned the medias hysteria and treatment of paedophilia. How does this do the same? This image is of a young girl having wet herself looking coy with a finger to her mouth which is a classic sexual pose. Don't get me wrong , this one image isn't going to turn normal people into paedophiles but at the same time it's wrong to normalise images of children in sexual scenarios ( even though I don't think for a minute that was the designers intention ). It's the thin end of the wedge, where do you draw the line and say thats inappropriate. In Japan rape is normalised in cartoons and comics and is a huge cultural problem over there. Anyway so much for saying I wasn't going to join the argument...............................................

maija
maija on Nov 04 '07
Wow, what's really disturbing are the people in this thread who are sexualizing the design. Judging by the artist's name, she's from Portugal or Brazil. In other parts of the world, people don't freak out at a child (or adult for that matter) without a top on and automatically think "OMG SEX!!!"

lyssie, you've got issues if you think that the little girl looks "aroused" and especially if you think the appropriate response to a drawing of a little girl peeing is wishing physical harm on the artist.

My Rant about this Shirt

I think the overall concept of this shirt is excellent. The idea that everyone has "accidents" is a classic theme. I would even suggest that there could be a series made from this original shirt, repeating the theme in other areas.

Such ideas could be a spilt wine glass on a white carpet, pen leaking in a shirt pocket, baseball through a window, fingers super glued together, etc.

As for the multiple references to the half dressed young girl, I think that for decency sake, children of all ages should have their torsos covered, chest to pubic area.

I'm protective (possibly over protective) in that manner as I believe that there are weirdoes out there enjoying the idea that there are people who allow babies and young children to wear as little as clothes as possible when they are out in public.

I hate clothes that are being sold for young girls now days that allow so much chest and belly area to be exposed. Don’t get me started on child size “booty shorts.”

I’m not a prude nor normally do I rant about things. I’m an open-minded person who encourages discussions. But when people start calling people other names and taking cheap shots, I get upset. I’m disgusted by the above people who are saying things that are border-line illegal and totally inappropriate.

Art is supposed to encourage discussion, but some of the comments above have gone too far. I think we all should just step back and take a deep breath.

@Red – I’m sorry about my earlier comment. I was reading the above comments and got upset at how everyone was attaching each other. I overreacted.

I never made a mention of or reference to pedophilia. I simply said the rendition of the girl is sexualized.

There's so many ways you could have treated the girl. Did she need to be wearing a tiny little g-string (a very sexualized, adult piece of clothing) and did she need to be, as Spam69 pointed out, "looking coy with a finger to her mouth which is a classic sexual pose"? (In fact, the hair, eyelashes, and eyebrows could have passed for an adult figure; only the undeveloped body suggests a young girl.) Paired with the excrement factor, it's just tasteless.

Not Threadless.
winkelmander
winkelmander on Nov 05 '07
who says it's a g-string? You can't see the back, so you don't know.

I see nothing sexual about this design, and frankly I'm a little shocked and amused by the people who do. The fuzz over 'nipplegate' comes to mind..

Anyway, I kinda like the idea and pooping birds, but the style of the illustration could be better. So 3 from me.

Spam69...Chris Morris is famous for his satire in general. I didn't mention anything about the Brass Eye Special, but as you do mention it, there was in that program a heavy reliance on knee jerk reactions to things people deem inappropriate. A lot of the comments here, as I mentioned, are typical knee jerk responses and that, in my opinion, would make Chris Morris proud.

My opinion is that to sexualise this image says more about the person complaining about it, than it does about what is appropriate or not. Whether you still think I'm lovely now, remains to be seen.
ericcoutinho
ericcoutinho on Nov 06 '07
I think i read in the comments box: "Remeber, be nice!"

You kids are idiots, retards, or something?

First:

The Threadless team don't block this design.

Second:

Lavinia is brazilian, and Brazil is a hot country; and here the kids don't use tops until 5-7 years old. Here, this is not sexual thing, but kids thing. If you people consider this thing sexual, your people have a little problem. Maybe this is a cause of school shooting things, or something weird happens in US.

Third:

FUCK THE FBI!

Make them talk to my Elite Squad.

It's a joke...

But here, free expression really works, and i don't had any fear about somebody taking my HD for that shit.

You can disaprove that design, and no problem to say something like: "In US this is not cool"

But never judge the sanity of a man or woman from other country, because the world IS NOT JUST THE US.

Dunno about anywhere else.

annushka - If you're not on a debate team you should be :) . That was a good point well made and I take it on board. I have to be the first to admit that this blog has snowballed into something verging on the hysterical ( in every sense of the word ).

Everyone has there own personal line in the sand as to what is appropriate or offensive. For me this crosses the line not just because I don't like it ( there are a lot of submissions I don't like but each to their own ) but because I think there are wider implications if this sub became a T-shirt on someones back. Does it say something about me personally because I see sexual ambiguity here? I don't know, perhaps, but what I do know is that there are people out there who will get a kick out of wearing this for the wrong reasons. It goes back to the point I made earlier about deviant attitudes being normalized. I don't want images like this to become acceptable in society because it would propagate the view that children can be seen in a sexual way. Which just in case everyone wasn't aware ( yes I'm talking to you artandfear ) is a bad thing.

Having said all that I don't blame the designer at all because I think this whole thing was unintended. I think she was going for a cute look rather than anything sexual. I think the girls hair is in an adult style which is the cause of the ambiguity and the toplessness and pool of pee added fuel to the fire.

Finally, I'm sure you don't give a damn one way or the other but I still think you're a lovely person :)

And Thumperella and geewally: the discussion about this design makes it more than clear that it won't get enough high votes to get it printed, so no need to be so dramatic.

Great art style, and I'd wear this shirt BECAUSE it is disturbing.

It's soo cute and soo wrong all at the same time.

I guess i still find pee-pee and poo-poo jokes funny.

It´s just about life guys!!!

Little kids runaround naked all the time!

If you can see anything wrong here, the problem is you, not the shirt!

i noticed someone said she was making a coy finger to the mouth sexual pose, but she is making it at the pig, whilst also pointing at the wee with her other hand,so maybe this tshirt is more about golden showers and animal sex than pedophilia?

lets all argue about that for a bit...

If depictions (albeit cute, or Brazilian-made) of half naked children doesn't make you even slightly raise an eyebrow, there's a problem. I wash my hands.

Man, please... get a life. You don't have any idea of how ridiculous you are, spending so much time with this submission. You should make better use of your time working on your designs, because they all suck! Really amatour, bad stuff.

You have no talent at all... but maybe, if you make an effort, try really hard and put some energy on your work, and not on your stupid comments, you can became just mediocre.

Some folks said that the U.S. commenters are being ethnocentric, (and it's true, we are ethnocentric in general) but the fact is that this design was submitted to an American company. If I submitted a design to a company in Brazil, I should know about the culture there. Further, if I bought this shirt, I would have to walk around wearing it here, in my culture, where it would be inappropriate.

I wouldn't buy this shirt because I do feel that the girl is sexualized, but I think the art is gorgeous. I hope the controversy won't stop the designer from submitting again.

I do feel that the girl is sexualized

She's taking a piss, you find that sexual? You ppl should read Everybody Poops because everybody does poop, pee and fart. But I guess this is what pornography is, huh? Please.

5ved and buyed.

knitteresa
knitteresa on Nov 08 '07
Nope, I don't care about the peeing part. I find her wearing a low-cut string bikini with no shirt to be sexual. I think the pose imitates one often used to depict "sexiness" in adult women. If this was a real little girl doing her thing and being a kid, I wouldn't have that opinion, but this is a portrayal of a child that was created for enjoyment of/use by adults.

No, I don't think this is pornography, but that it's inappropriate. And I don't have any objection to pornography anyway. But I object to involving kids in adult sexuality.

And yes, people should read Everyone Poops. It's a great book. My students love it, and I deal with their "oopses" every day.

Again, I really hope to see more work from this designer.
Hachi

I love the design, but I definitely would not buy it. I would feel uncomfortable wearing a shirt like that

No it doesn't. While the new Bill C-2 raises a lot of concerns about limitations on artistic expression, if this particular piece ever made it onto a t-shirt it is highly unlikely that it would be the object that tests that law. Yeesh.

Who cares about the new bill? The existing laws are bad enough.

My neighbour wrote the review that got Eli Langer busted, and that was back in '93.

What is the Brazilian reality TV show for grown ups that want to RAPE kids?

I gonna take a wild guess there isn't one

we have a problem with this in the US, (not 'america')

IN the US it is called "To Catch a Preditor"

Do you as a Brazilian designer want to perpetuate US preditors? It's not that far fetched.

I hope we all respect kids

We all respect women

and by all means I respect many Brazilian franz!

Brazilians come to chicago

its no Rio

But Rio

is no Chicago

com respeito!

If your from Brazil don't hate on US,

we send respect
