I like the idea, but that brush stroke looked pretty random before I read the title. Maybe make it look more like a scribble?

The 'cutout' filter in PS and the 'live trace' in Illustrator seem to be used too much. Takes away from personal artistic merit. I'd much rather see your own version of the shades in the bird.
