Based on Magritte's work.

Translation:

1- This is not a pipe.

2- This is not a man smoking a pipe.

3- This is not a wife of a man smoking a pipe because she obtained the divorce for she could not take it anymore. My God! That man smokes too much!

:)

I like the illustrations, but the words are a little confusing.

I like the tie to the other threadless tee, the illustrations, and the text. The way they are on a tshirt doesn't quite work for me, but I like everything else... so who knows?!

The text ruins it for me. It'd make sense without the words at least I think.

i like it. i really like the french, but somehow i feel like the fact that there's text takes away from the design? i don't know. i'm having self conflict over it... ignore me...

Mojie on Oct 30 '07
The text does make it look unbalanced, but it would be a bit strange without the text included at all. The theme is funny, the artwork is great, but the whole thing together as is isn't quite working.

Still, I'd give it a 3.

I think it's obviously a piece of art of such a person that can feel the comedy even in the most obvious things... whatever, I love his artworks...

I really like the concept... and I really hope this wins, because I know someone that this would make a great gift for.

If you don't like the text, then you really don't get what the illustration is referencing. The text is essential.

However, it is unfortunate that another 'This Is Not a Pipe" design has already been printed on Threadless with a more clever approach.

I wish it was "ceci" n'est pas une pipe which is what it actually is...

I would like it if it was proper French.
MoveTheClouds
MoveTheClouds on Oct 31 '07
Me too. Proper French. For instance, it's actually "Ceci n'est pas une pipe," rather than "ce." That is, if I remember correctly from the Magritte painting, and all my high school French classes, anyway.

Cute idea, but somehow it just doesn't work, especially considering that the French isn't grammatically correct. Although the illustrations are BRILLIANT. I would hang onto those and use them for something else.

Oups, you are right freshview.
But I can correct it easily if it wins. I don't think this little mistake would be a reason to give a bad grade. Or I will have to re-submit it.
My apologies to French speakers.

Yes the French is wrong, not so much the "ce n'est pas une pipe" ok in French but a poor tribute to Magritte's "ceci n'est pas une pipe".
"Elle a divorcé pour..." should be "Elle a divorcé parce qu'elle.."
Too much text anyway.

i like the fact that the text is french, because i don't speak french, and i don't mind a little confusion sometimes, y'know? still pretty easy to see what's up. interesting and different design, well done.

La formulation de la phrase est douteuse. Lorsque vous écrivez en français, ne vous contentez pas de le faire traduire par Babelfish....

hemmm... My first langage is French and I saw some little mistakes in the description of the woman.

I would suggest to you:

"Ce n'est plus l'épouse d'un homme fumant la pipe, puisqu'elle a demandé et obtenu le divorce parce qu'elle ne pouvait plus le supporter. Mon Dieu! Cet homme fume trop!"

Even though is not 100% perfect, this is a better translation to French.

Too much text. Unreadable text. The 3rd French is not correct French.
