This is inspired by those 40s and 50s propaganda posters.

This is my first design in a pretty long while. Thanks!

i really enjoy the overall style of this piece, not quite sure i understand the musical note though...

PATRICKwMORGAN on Sep 10 '07
The propaganda posters would have an image of an octopus with a swastika or similar symbol of evil that was encompassing the Earth. In this case it's a note.

Perhaps a bit smaller on the shirt, not a fan of total shirt pictures

oh this is cool! i think you might not even need that light brown outline!

Nice. I wouldn't make it smaller. It's good the size that it is.

Nice. I think you should keep it the size that it is.

Like it on brown, makes it look more retro. I would see if you can come up with a different "evil" symbol than a music note. It just seems like "evil music is taking over the world!". Or maybe no symbol at all?

Jenn1982 on Sep 11 '07
I agree with kadis no symbol is needed 5$ from me I like it!

But, that's why the octopus isn't sinister looking. Because it's NOT evil. Think of it as a satire.

It's just wierd you trying to take a symbol and idea of world domination by the jewish stereotype that this represents and turning into a symbol of musical love for all. I'm all for subverting evil thoughts and media and using them for good, i just don't think this completely wins me over or convinces me the job has been done in a way that overcomes the evilness of the source material. Just being honest, and maybe this effects me more with all the anti-semitic crap i've had to deal with in my life. lol.

also, i think the octopus should have more to do with a music if you are using it in that way, with cleft note suckers or something like that.

Lose the music note and you're set.

The line quality in the illustration is gorgeous, but I'll chime in too -- lose the musical note (or replace it with something more interesting).

The original sketch that I did for this had the peace sign where the note is. I suppose I could have just stuck with that.

Peace sign probably would have been better, I agree that the musical note may be unnecessary.

I love this design, though.

I have to aggree about the musical note, it should go or try something else (if I think of anything I might be cheeky enough to let you know) I think the outline might not be needed either.

GREAT design, even if I'd rather see it without the note I'll be shell out the clams for this one if it makes it. Yes, pun intended.

I love the style. Amazing. I'm not a very big fan of the blue shirt, though. The colour it's on in the background really goes well with it.

Beautiful.

Try a light yellow shirt though and I would score $5 rather than 5.

I know the music note is completely relevant to the design idea and background.

But I'd prefer it without.
Not many other people would understand it, it looks out of place.

I love it! And to be honest, the note is a good conversation starter, I mean with threadless tee's I usually get people asking what the tee about.

Also the style is great, I'd totally wear it.

This is pretty and clever but it gets on my nerves. I think it should be sold but anyone I see wearing it will probably get beat up.

I feel you changed it to the musical note simply so you could crowbar it into this particular competition. Would have been stronger if you had just subbed it as was, although the whole inspiration behind it seems rather strange. Was the original piece of propaganda warning against Nazism or just plain third Reich propaganda ( which is always a bad starting point as far as inspiration goes ).
PATRICKwMORGAN
PATRICKwMORGAN on Sep 13 '07
Originally it was propaganda the warn against the Nazis, in recent times it's been used to warn against globalism and many other various movements. My original drawing in my sketchbook was with the peace sign on the forward, not to warn against peace, but to promote global peace. That's why it's a cutesy octopus; not a harrowing, sinister looking one. Octopuses seem to be either "in" or coming "in" so I thought that would also work as a good way to utilize the design to use it for a positive message.

Plus, it's just a really iconic, cool looking image in my opinion and I felt that the new message would translate well for music as well. "Music is taking over the world" type thing.

Anyway, I didn't really want to have to explain the whole thing out, but I guess I was sort of opening a can of worms. Regardless of all that though, I hope you guys can also enjoy the image purely for whatever aesthetic value it may have.

Thanks!

I know the octopus on the earth background. I've parodied it a few times myself.

I think I's like a peace sign on the octopus head. Other then that it's cool. Technically speaking I like the parallel hatching to the cross hatch.

i wouldn't change it a bit - i actually really like the music note because it is a little different, and as has been mentioned before can be a really cool conversation starter!
don't make it any smaller! it's perfect just as is.
