After my twentieth or so listening to the song I finally started to move away from the literal representations of children with coins or girls with birds and started to think about the situations that the song implies. I kept seeing a brother and sister living in the suburbs in the 50's surrounded by the normal childhood climate of imagination and fear. I envisioned a precarious game of sport in which the brother was playing for more than fun, and the fear of losing meant something awful would happen.
The 50's interpretation reminded me of Neil Simon's 'Brighton Beach Memoirs' where the brother's poker playing means more to his family than a card game.
Nice work-up.
I was thinking it would be good to have crumpled money on the floor next to him but that may mess with the overall design.
