There are many different ways to interpret this design. The main and most obvious is the line between science fiction/fantasy and reality. What's truly real (at least to me) is poverty, starving children, suffering. What's science fiction (at least for now) is artificial inteligence, artificial emotions/feelings. So I have combined the two.
If you can't tell, the child is a life-like robot child with life-like feelings left alone on the street to starve and suffer (I know, I know, most robots don't actually eat. They can starve off of low energy/fuel, 'k?).
You can interpret this your own ways as well. Enjoy!
