Krakaboom on Aug 09 '07 Alexandra Marie: These arejust some terms popularly used by the Cockneys in England. So 'apples and pears' means stairs, so someone might say "We'll just take the apples and pears to the second floor."

Ok, I love that people don't get this and lets face it why should they. Cockney rhyming slang originated in London as a way of talking in code so that coppers ( police ) wouldn't know what you were talking about. Some of it is now part of the English language ( in the U.K ) as a whole eg. Telling a porkie = pork pie = lie. Other slang is more centred around just London and changes all the time. Some of it I think is great but alot of it is just an affectation ( why say Current Bun when you can say the word sun which is much shorter ? ) As for the T - good concept but could have been done better.

So, they replace a word that's rhymes with the word they actually mean? And the person that they're talking to will get it because it's in context?
For example: Non-cockney: Let' take the train to the park. Cockney: Let's take the horse's mane to the park. If I understand this correctly, it sounds super fantastic. |

I'm in the US and not as cultured as others in the linguistics of other countries, especially not France, but I love this. The scratchy, 'messy' look that others describe really clashes well with the green shirt, and I got the concept right away even though I'd never heard of Gockney before. Indeed, perfect for beginners. :) I love it.

It would be "I'd love to give you a lady" You're not supposed to say the word that rhymes.' They're American and they probably don't know what a 'fiver' is, either. Come on, give them a break. |

I love that people are using the American card to cover for ignorance. Cockney slang is SUPER popular, it's in all kinds of shows and movies... how have you people never heard of this?

Some cockney rhyming slang is gloriously convoluted - my favourite is the slang for anti-american sentiment: Listerine
