I think it´s hopeful, see the smiling ghosts!
In the beginning the design has no name, maybe "the suicide children" is a bit weird, but the relationship between the title and the design is just to put a name to the t-shirt.

Thanks for the comments ^_^
And sorry for my poor english v_v

No comment on the subject but design wise...
Having hard edges really hurts as it gives an instant generic unfinished look and feel. The edges should be more free flowing and organic. You could use the strokes that the ground is made up of and let them extend at different lengths or something.

shakethesheets on Aug 02 '07

this is sick and disgusting and extremely disrespectful to anyone who has lost someone from suicide. this should be taken off threadless.
mj00
mj00 on Aug 02 '07
It's weird to me that people are up in arms over this one (cartoon violence is a staple of illustration, and here it happens to be self-inflicted- it's not even gory!). Without the title I'm not sure anyone would assume these were children, either. The way it is drawn, that thing could easily be some kind of spectral tire swing- I can't imagine many people would look close enough to be offended in the real world.

My only issue with this design is that it isn't currently making good use of the shirt- I think the tree and spirits should climb higher on the tee, and as was said earlier the edges should be faded. I quite like the little characters.

Only mediocre works of art are not hated by anybody. Interesting concept and illustration. I usually don't like pictures this large on a tee, but the composition is nice with the moon as the central element.

FRICKINAWESOME
   FRICKINAWESOME on Aug 02 '07
Really cool design and the idea is so well done and understandable, but as Shimala said (which is only like the third time ive ever seen him comment on a sub), the cutoff kills the flow of this design, plus the concept as a tee isn't really my thing. But i just gotta appreciate a fully realized concept that shows an intruiging story as your eyes flow from the left to right, and back to the left again as the ghosts go happily away. 3.
kurt bayne

i'm no expert, but doesn't it seem too complex/busy for a tee?

DanielB
DanielB on Aug 02 '07
First at all, I am very sorry about the people that have felt offended by this picture, but also I think that it is only telling a little story, and so it should be respected as such. Irony and humour are borderless and necessary, and they are two essential pillars on my own way of life. For this reason, I demand respect for my worldview and my manner, as I respect the opinion of other people.

Thanks.

diulf_teloiv_a
diulf_teloiv_a on Aug 02 '07
i really don't understand why people are so offended by this shirt because there are plenty of violent shirts on threadless and it isn't making a violent statement. without the title no one would even know they were children. i've had more than one friend kill themselves/attempt suicide and i wasn't offended at all. the artist wasn't trying to hurt anyone with it. i just don't think they need to be crucified. jeez.

anyway, design-wise, i think it's a good start but the edges need to be fixed. the landscape is great (ground/tree/moon) and i thought the ghosts were very cute. don't worry too much. you can't live life without offending someone sometime.

suicide is a serious thing and i don't think it is an appropriate subject for a t-shirt. i'm not really offended, but i think that it is tasteless. i can tell you are not making a joke of it, but suicide really is a sensitive subject that can upset a lot of people very easily.

I think this design is awesome, and people need to chill the eff out. The design tells a story, and makes me want to think about what is going, and why.

Also, saying it offends you solely on the basis of being about suicide is lame. It isn't glorifying suicide. You can't be offended merely by the subject of suicide. After all, I know people who've died, but I'm not offended every time someone brings up death.

Plus, I actually find the title intriguing. I mean, "suicide children" doesn't have to mean literal children. After all, we're all someone's child. I genuinely like this shirt, and gave you a $5, but I would have given you a 5 regardless for submitting this and sticking up for it.
opifan64
   opifan64 on Aug 04 '07
When i first saw this I took it more as a commentary on modern ennui, where no thrill can possibly fill the void or disaffection people feel... or as statement on how death itself is trivialized in popular culture and made to be entertainment. I didn't see it as necessarily condoning or encouraging suicide. The way the people are lined up suggests people lined up at a newest, craziest midway ride (or a trendy club) so I interpreted that as social commentary rather than a sick joke that makes light of suicide. That said, I can see how a design like this could upset and offend some people, and my intepretation is probably way off anyhow. The hard edge at the bottom of the design really does break the flow.

I appreciate this is only a t-shirt design no doubt made with the best of intentions, but this site attracts quite a lot of young people who maybe on average can be more fundamentally influence by things than older people. I don't want to sound overly critical but surely you realize that the suicide of children is not a fit subject for this site. I would describe you design as irresponsible. I wounder whether you created this design to cause controversy and there by elevate yourself in the eyes of the immature
catalina_s
catalina_s on Aug 04 '07
Let me first say that i don't wish to attack the designer at all, especially as he has apologized already for offending anyone. To all of you who have told people who are offended/hurt/saddened by the design to "chill out," you are thoughtless and rude. shame on all of you. defend the artist's intentions if you want, but have some understanding for people who may have been personally affected by suicide.
sargent
sargent on Aug 04 '07
"a picture is worth a thousand words" The artist may mean one thing but convey another. I found this design a little disturbing... suicide is a real thing that shouldn't be messed with jokingly. I Thought it was well drawn, keep it up my friend, a little on the brighter side :)

Spam69
Spam69 on Aug 04 '07
I think this guy has drawn something personal to him and then without too much thought has put it in the public domain without a good explanation of what it means to him. Context is everything in art which is why there has been so much upset over this. There are people out there ( mostly teenagers ) who love morbid shit like this, the darker the better, as a way of expressing angst. It doesn't necessarily mean they want to kill themselves or anyone else.

heyheyitsme on Aug 04 '07

It's not the people it doesn't affect that concerns me it's the ones it might affect. With the greatest respect to you, an explanation does not serve as a justification for something that is unnecessary and easily avoidable on a site that has submissions from children.
Chris Carney
Chris Carney on Aug 05 '07
I notice that Daniel B has not spoken of trying to withdraw this submission maybe he is enjoying the attention to much. What sort of person introduces the subject of child suicide amid much protest and still does not feel the need to withdraw their design. Does DanielB get some sort ot thrill out of all this?
mj00
mj00 on Aug 05 '07
Some of you guys are nuts, seriously. There is absolutely no reason to withdraw this. That sounds like total censorship bullshit. While a few people found this offensive, a lot of people found it worthwhile otherwise it would have been dropped from the competition due to score by now.

Also, Chris Carney- do you honestly believe that if a kid saw this they'd kill themselves? Really? That seems to be your argument, but it just makes me think that you don't know many kids. If people were that strongly influenced by shirts, Wham would have ended suicide ages ago...
Chris Carney
Chris Carney on Aug 05 '07
mjoo: Your reasoning seem to be lame and uninformed. You have ether not read my comments very closely or you have simply not understood them. You have attributed views to me which I have not expressed or implied directly or indirectly. Is there any where in my comments that would suggest in any way that I would welcome " total censorship shit " .Withdrawing this design is " acceptable censorship" in as much as banning child pornography is " acceptable censorship " I would not use the word censorship, I view these issue as a question of what is acceptable behaviour in a free society. I find your general approach to this serious subject as feable. It seem as if you decided upon you opinion first and then worked out your argument.
phoenixwildfire
phoenixwildfire on Aug 05 '07
i aggree its a bit disturbing, thought provoking, but maybe thats the point.... art is interpretation... suicide is real. it happens all over... how many kids committ suicide, too many... they do it cause they are miserable and feel like there is no way out but death... in the illustration the kids are miserable, and their souls are lifted smiling.... one has to aggree this world we live in isnt always easy.... maybe this shirt is a way for the artist to display all of this....

all the shirts go through inspection before it is put up on here.. so obviously threadless thought it was ok to post... everyone has opionions and thoughts. we have to respect them... both pro and con....

with that said, i think the artist as talent. keep up the good work... i love the whole feel of the shirt, even though its a bit disturbing...

phoenixwildfire
phoenixwildfire on Aug 05 '07
and i think those who are protesting the most, its hitting a chord or something....
phoenixwildfire
phoenixwildfire on Aug 05 '07
also there are different uses to suicide. i found this def. on google:

The destruction or ruin of one's own interests: It is professional suicide to involve oneself in illegal practices.

and other types of artists have used the name suicide, like suicide girls, etc.....
DanielB
DanielB on Aug 05 '07
The title will not be present on the t-shirt -I think I have talked about that above-, and I have assumed that children and suicide in the same phrase are not a good combination. Some people have judged only the title, not the design proper, in this design I work with some concepts as life, death, childhood, the way we lose innocence, dreams, hopes... Also about the fear to death, how we do not accept it as part of our lifes.

If you like the t-shirt, score 5; if not, score 0, that is the purpose of scores; and the comments, to make critics and observations about the design, not the designer. You do not know me (nor I you), for I think you should be more thoughtful when judging people from a image uploaded into a t-shirt contest with the best intentions.
My purpose was not try to cause controversy, I believe that controversy is something good if it makes you to think over and look forward. Art is the best catalyser of society and culture, in many ways the controversy is the essence of art -do you remember Dadaism?-, but I fear that I have not enough talent and genius to be controversial in the way I wish.
As I said, this is just a little story I wanted to tell, and I respect the opinions of people that dislike it and those felt offended by, but in most of the cases critics are focusing the design, not me. This is the way to do it (remember, be nice!).
Chris, do you know Magritte? 'Ceci n'est pas une pipe'? Well, the children are not children, the tree is not a tree, and the things flying to the sky are not ghosts. Please, don´t compare a t-shirt design with the child pornography, because it is very, very unfair, as you know.

No sense of humor around here...and of course no metaphor understanding, this desing is a classic joke against the sadness of the death, part ironic, part poetic, just see the works of Edward Gorey or Charles Addams in which is usual to find children as a concept to examine our society, is just like compare the tragedy of Columbine with the violence in the videogames. Bad taste?, yes, of course people said that about Pollock, Picasso or Murakami, I think the question is quite simple, is just educational point of view...
By the way, I love the desing and sure I'm going to buy it!

well. i like the subject matter and it's well done. but the placement is really bad. either put it all the way at the bottom of the shirt or move it up to the chest area. and the moon is pretty much SMACK in the middle of the shirt, maybe if you had the moon kinda hanging out behind the tree a little bit. or if you moved the design up the shirt you could have the moon on one of the shoulders.

I'm not going to enter the content debate, either. Your style is awesome, but with something like this I would consider doing the edges of it a little differently to how you've done here. It seems a little chopped off to me, and I think this design would greatly benefit from a more 'fading out' approach, that way you could make the stream of ghosts not 'cut off' too. If you toned back the ground area, the queue of people and ghosts would jump out. keep up with your art, you obviously have talent.
Midnighteskye

I like that it is dark and disturbing! I would so buy if it makes it.

To reply to CC just because there may be younger children on here does not make it the artist's duty to make sure that the child doesn't see anything disturbing, it is the child's parents duty to make sure they know what their children are doing, seeing, etc. and that they understand what they are seeing. I do not think that means things can just be crazy with no thought but seriously this design, I don't think is as disturbing as other designs I have seen on this site. I honestly don't see what the big fuss is I've seen way worse things that were uncalled for here on threadless.

This is a really good design DanielB. :) And actually, just looking at it without the title, it doesn't look like they're necessarily commiting suicide, it's almost like they're already dead and moving through a line that's crossing over, you know? I love your style, and I love the full moon to death. People have already recommended that you smooth out your edges above, and I think I would suggest that you make the branch with the noose or tire swing or whatever on it look more like the others on the tree, it looks a little unnatural. :)

For the "offended" ones: "Have you ever seen TV? What about "Ghost whisperer", also offended? And what about movies, did you also felt offended with the very awarded "Corpse Bride" by Tim Burton with all these dead bodies or with Sofia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides???
Come on.........

this should have gotten higher. you people are asses for not judging the design...instead you judged the name of the shirt!

i, for one, did not judge the shirtt based on the title, i judged it based on the design. this design had no quality. the actual drawing was too simple and it's not vibrant for my taste. also, there are many ideas on how to draw this topic and personally this drawing does not match or even grasp it.

I think some people were attracted to this design because of the controversy it coursed and not the design in it's self. I would not be surprised if DanielB submitted a design depicting a pile of dog shit to attract attention to himself. No doubt there will be those who will hale it as a master piece in order to appear as "edgy people"

I don't think this image would spur a string of suicides.
It doesn't really get the idea across of copycat suicide.
But,
I had to do research on copycat suicide and i would be cautious about creating shirts about suicide. On the island of Micronesia, where there had never been reported suicide- one
kid, after a fight with his father, commited suicide and within weeks hundreds copied his suicide. Most of them even copied the way he committed suicide- he hung himself and so did they. The kids who copied him even wrote similar suicide notes blaming their parents... You can look this up on the net.
(it was in a book titled The Tipping Point, Malcom Gladell.)

So, its not absurd to suggest that this is dangerous.
and its not that absurd to suggest banning this.
Newspapers all around the world censor reports on suicide
becuase when a suicide is reported in the paper the suicide rates jump.

Slicedbread8: Thanks for your comments, I find your words very interesting. I shall have a look on the Internet for the book. I wanted the design banned, but only from sites like threadless were parent would not expect their children to be viewing depictions of suicide.

Well I'm assuming that because of sensitive individuals this got pulled? I was hoping to also wear it to a family gathering and start some sh*t.
