Just for all y'all out there that don't read encyclopedias, a flock of crows is technically a murder of crows. Just like a flock of geese is really a gaggle of geese.

cool design, but the amount of birds and placement isn't right.

This would make an awesome T-Shirt if the crows were actually murdering someone

their heads are too round. They look more like black parrots to me.

Hello everyone! Thanks so much for all of your helpful suggestions, etc.
As for the "cutxpaste" allegations, how else should I make a flock out of my drawing, except for to replicate the same image? I like the same-ness, but do you think that drawing 13 individual crows would dramatically change the impact of the design in a tee context?

As far as placement, what is your suggestion...if you think my choice is off?
theblackapple
theblackapple on Jul 24 '07
Also, Freshview, some crows (the American crow, FYI) have rounder heads than others:

I do think that having individual crows opposed to pasting the same one would help the design. You designed the bird so well, and it looks great. Apply the same techniques to different birds. It's nice to see a little variety opposed to the same thing over and over again.

theblackapple on Jul 24 '07
Thank you very much for your thoughtful comment. It's really helpful, as I really didn't think to draw a variety of different crows.

yeah, change up the birds. right now it looks more like they're supposed to be making some sort of pattern that went wrong.

I have no problem with the copy and paste effect and I feel like it's completely up to the artist whether they want the repetition of copy and paste or the individuality of drawing each one.

However, the arrangement of the birds is so awkward, unless there's something I'm missing about the way you intentionally arranged them. It's just not a very appealing group of objects.

I was aiming for a sort of random-ness with the placement of the each bird...and then an overall "swoop" of the larger group from ribcage to shoulder.

"Swoop"= new technical design term ;)

i think that most of the voters are unfamiliar w/ this particular style of design that has been picked up by screen printers and crafters. also, it would probably look a lot better on a person than you would imagine. anyhow, it is a nice design and a coy play on murder.

i like it on red, what colour goes better with murder than red?

The placement and title caused me to think that the birds were forming some sort of implement of murder! If individually drawn crows were forming a knife or something I'd be very impressed. Anyway. I like the way the crow is drawn, I'm just not crazy about seeing the same one over and over. I'd think that you could make some minor edits to some of the birds' expressions and positions and it would add quite a bit without being too time consuming.

Nice drawing, but if you're going to do the copy and paste thing, I would vary it a bit.. It just looks like it was randomly pasted, without a thought to overall design. Maybe make some smaller, or have some flying.

LOL at NothingButMatt. I agree.

The bird itself though is very nicely done.

I wish it were individually-illustrated crows, rather than copypaste. :/

   opifan64 on Jul 26 '07
i hate to reiterate the same point, but this would be great if the crows were all individually drawn, with some variety in the poses. for example, i'd like to see one pruning its wing, a few looking in a different direction maybe... it would be more engaging, and help move the eye through the composition.
