About my design

by davertheraver
A drawing that was put on a T-shirt mostly as an afterthought. The little sign that has a cannibis leaf raised a little controversy in the critiques forum, but I aim to make a T-shirt that looks cool and reflects Toronto, not some empty, safe to consume commodity (Toronto has lot's of cannibis related boutiques, cafe's etc). Anyway, off my high horse, hope you enjoy looking at it! x

i like it, the ink drawing look works for me. i noticed that one area is rather darker off center right...looks like a building, it stands out, i think it could use some more dark spots.

I love simple ink drawings. One of my favorite illustrators is a guy by the name of Andrew Zbihlyj, pronounced Zi-Bee-Lee, who is from Toronto, or at least lives there. I love the illustration on white, but i just don't like houw boxy it is. You could have gone all over the place with this type of style.

either way, 5 from me

I live in Toronto, and I really like how not-cheesy this looks (if you get what I mean). The style is not sentimental, but it still looks like it was put together by someone who actually cares.

I hope you can get what I mean despite my idiot words.

squintygirl: I completely get what you're saying. I live there too and there's a really specific feel about it, and you caught it. My concern is with the cannabis. That's not what a leaf looks like, and I don't like that it's set away, I'd like it better if it was overlapped more, like the other stuff.

I live in TO as well, and I think you've caught the smooshed-together feel of the city, with a lot of what makes the burg what it is. Except for the weed. You've given it pride of place and even though it's not drawn properly, it's the most easily identifiable bit. It doesn't fit in with the way everything else is set up, and it looks like you've absolutely insisted on sticking it in there.

I live in a small town 8 hours north of Toronto where everyone hates Toronto, and I agree that this captures the spirit of the city perfectly. The composition is excellent; I especially like how you managed to incorporate several landmarks (especially the CNT) without it feeling like a cheesy souvenir shirt. The subway sign is my favourite.

While I understand your vision, I agree with renaissance.monkey about the leaf. 5

Another Torontonian on Threadless here, and I agree with everyone else here on the shirt -- it's great to see a Toronto shirt that really captures some of its key elements of the city and its spirit (the smooshed-ness?) without being a tacky souvenir shirt. mc this has a good point about maybe some more heavy lines in places as well -- the building right underneath the CN Tower seems more ink heavy than the rest, and while I like how it makes the detail there really stand out, some of the other lighter sketches around it look a little washed-out by comparison.

I also agree with what several other people have said about the marijuana leaf -- it really sticks-out more than it should for a shirt whose theme is Toronto and doesn't seem to fit with everything else, and it may just be me, but I think it also politicizes a shirt that would probably have more appeal if it wasn't on it and is the only thing on the shirt that make me a little wary of wearing it.

Overall though, this is really fantastic and one of my favourite designs here so far.

Cool, hindsight is a wonderful thing. I never really meant for the weed leaf to be that prominent but I guess it is, judging judging from reactions. Some very observational people on here! Yes the dark lines not really supposed to be like that, I used the wrong pencil and realised my mistake too late! Anyway, it's here now... thanks x

I love the drawing... BUT (sorry!) I think it would be better as a bag or something than a t-shirt, which I know people say a lot. The problem is, this is beautfiully complex. Personally, I don't want someone staring at my chest for that long to see everything about the picture. (Maybe that's just me, though, so 5.)

Love the shirt, makes me miss home. I agree with other posts about the weed leaf. I don't remember Toronto having an inordinate number of marijuana-themed shops compared to other cities in Canada, but then again it has been a while. I don't know if you are dead set against changing your design, but you could always replace the leaf with a street sign covered in graffiti or othe steet art. That's another thing I miss, all the graffiti around Queen St.

great drawing, but would look too cluttered and nonsensical on a shirt. especially since they just printed that life drawing shirt.

Not from Toronto, still like it. Reminds me of the "To the 5 Burroughs" CD packaging.

I like the drawing and don't really have a problem with the marijuana sign, except that it doesn't have the right number of leaves. It should be 7, not five. Oop! Just realized freshview already pointed this out more or less, but there you have it.

artandstory on Jul 18 '07
...also, i don't know toronto, but maybe the marijuana sign is a little large/prominent, as others have mentioned. maybe about half the size would be good.

So, this design *rocks*. 5$ My only critique is the modified cannibus detail, front and center. It looks like some weird sign for a banana bouquet and takes away from the awesomeness everywhere else in the design. Maybe keep the actual cannibus symbol, but make it smaller and/or put it somewhere else in the design. But yeah, this is awesome.

I love Toronto, DH and I went there on our honeymoon in '96, we keep going back all the time. Best city on the planet. Not sure what I think of the cannabis leaf; although it's true that there are some boutiques selling cannabis-themed items, I wouldn't say it's a major component of the TO experience. There are loads more safe-sex shops, candy shops, Timmy's, Pizza Pizza, and even LUSH shops than marijuana-themed boutiques. I love the squirrel on the pole, reminds me of the one that's always painted a different color on that tall tree stump (still there, I gather?). You've ambitiously tackled a huge subject, as Toronto is completely packed with recognizable imagery. I think I'd have to beg for a SAM the Record Man reference, since it's so quintessentially Toronto. I'm marvelling that you squeezed the City Hall building in over there on the left, and I love you for putting Chinatown front and center (any day that I don't walk through Chinatown is a day half-lost). I even love the bundles of garbage on the side, and if you had a close-up, perhaps I could spot a homeless person in there somewhere. I hope Threadless prints this. $5 of course, it's beautiful.
