i like the doll and the concept, but i'm not sure how the designs on the background relate.

They are good though...

ya i think the background might be a little to busy, but its still really funny

if the voodoo pin was clearly poking the heart area the background would make more sense. the avatar for this looks really perverted.

I don't think the background is any busier than a lot of thingso n this site that get printed, plus it goes very well with the disjointed stitched-together point of the shirt. I'd just tone down the patterns behind the raggedy andy in hell's hair so it stands out more. Very nice design tho.

Great Idea-Love the design. have to say though, and it just maybe my dirty mind, but the thumbnail is really phallic.

The background designs called vèvès (drawings used in Haitian Voudou to represent the gods [loas]) bear no relation to the voodoo doll concept -- the connection of Haiti to voodoo dolls was a creation of WB Seabrook in a book called "The Magic Island." There are statues that are used in certain African religious traditions that are impaled, but they are impaled as a prayer for the suffering of that person by that person.

Hoodoo (also known as New Orleans Voodoo) does use dolls, but its traditions vary greatly from Haitian Voudou and also rely heavily on Native American and European magic rituals (where the use of dolls to do black magic on others is the probable source of the voodoo doll, not indigenous and African religious traditions). It would be more appropriate to use images from Hoodoo rites.

In addition, there are vèvès that are used in the design that never would be called upon to do "black magic," like Erzulie ("the Goddess of Love") and Marassa ("the divine twins"). The only vèvès that would be used during "black magic" ceremonies are petro loas, not the rada loas.

Now, I realize that most people would not know this information, but if you are going to represent a culture that is not your own, do it with knowledge, respect, and common sense.

I think this is perfect just as it is. The voodoo/hoodoo info was interesting but -no offense- I couldn't care less if some of the elements in her design are contradictory and would never be used together by a practitioner of Voudou, in the same way that I don't care if a shirt shows Jesus using a hoodoo doll, or Jesus giving Satan a piggyback ride. Besides, I don't think this was intended to represent Haitian culture, it is just influenced by a part of Haitian culture. The veves are beautiful and I appreciate them for that and, frankly, nothing else. If you or the people of Haiti think they have some kind of magic power go right ahead and think that, but don't get upset that I think that belief is ridiculous, or that someone used them on a t-shirt.

I'm not Irish but if I used St. Patrick in a design and some Irishman got offended I'd roll my eyes then tell him to lighten the hell up, and that's assuming I was in a good mood.

Oh, and put me down for a 5 and a buy! This design rocks!

definitely better without the background "activity" don't distract us from the voodoo doll and needle.

i love the doll but the background's a little too much. lose the background and i'd definitely buy it

Wanted to give it "5", but please make the background a touch less prominent. Maybe even reversing the dark and light parts would do the trick, so that the doll stands out in front of the pattern.

nice idea - agree with the comments re: background and it does look a bit big on the shirt in terms of size, but maybe i'm a bit biased as i prefer smaller, minimal designs...

If it were just the design in the background, minus the voodoo dool, i'd buy it.
