curious how you don't seem to mind which way the illustration faces. surely the kanji can't read the same in both directions?

Actually, the artist flipped the kanji back to normal when they flipped the illustration; something that most people would have neglected to do.

Maneki neko-chan is adorable, I'd wear this. I can't say I'm an expert, but I've seen a lot of beckoning cats and the kanji look fine to me.

it depends who you ask, but usually left paw raised brings a store owner more customers, but a right paw brings wealth/good luck. (some people believe the opposite. i don't think there's a right or wrong.) since they're usually good luck charms for business establishments, some people believe that a left paw is for bars, a right paw for stores.
