I stand corrected. I looked it up. There is one species of Tapir native to Asia and you very clearly drew that variety. My apologies.

yay for america bashing. there is an issue with the N. America thing though. We are not the only people that refer to ourselves as americans... th problem is I don't think the shirt works well with the word North or the letter N added. Maybe with the actual shapes of the continents in questions added or in place of the words???

I may be wrong, but I don't think it was intended to suggest every other country is perfect . . . or that every american is a swine or a sheep (just as every African being is not a Lion or a Rhino). EIther way I think it is clever.

It seems to me it's a sweeping generalisation of modern Western society, and America is the most predominant symbol of a modern Western country, so it makes sense to put (North) America there... the only other main symbol of Western society would really be England. Maybe it would be less controversial if there were four or six countries/continents shown... Africa = Leo, Asia = Tapirus, N America = Swine, Britain = Sheep (or vice versa for Britain/N America)? That way, it would be an indictment against Western society rather than just the USA.... I don't think the shirt's intended to suggest that every American is a swine or a sheep by any means, but I can understand how some Americans would get offended by this shirt. And love love love this shirt :-) |

This is more a humourous comment on the socialist view of capitalism than a slur on America. To me it's incidental that it says America and it more representative of the post-industrial revolution West, including Britain. If it said UK or Europe, it would tickle me in exactly the same way. How can people pull out the anti-american card so easily? "Swine" looks to be referring to the people on the top teirs of our economic ladder. firstly, who ever said that the designers were designing purely for the sake of money? secondly, capitalism in my book doesnt include the money needed to put food on the table. It also doesnt have anything to do with not being rewarded for your efforts. it has to do with the sick obsession the western world has with money. and i say down with it.

It's become as effortless as breathing. Hence…boring and not too deep. Don't get me wrong, the illustration style is fantastic. Can't we make some other political statement? Well-said, fatheed. Recalls the socialist/communist phrase "capitalist pigs!" The "swine"'s old-fashioned style of dress particularly says that. He's not dressed like a modern American, so I'd have a hard time assuming this was making fun of America today; that style of suit (with monacle no less!) recalls exactly that era. Looks like a turn-of-the-century political cartoon, in fact. The way the text is done really adds to that impression, too. |

this is so very awesome. i think that i'd like it better without the names of the continents, though. not because of this whole america thing but more because of the surprise factor. the swine would come as a very nice surprise instead of being, in a way, somewhat expected. (not that the wordplay is; just the fact that there's a joke)

man...if i dont recall, there have been plenty of anti-american designs on this website ( even though my design is more anti capitalism) so i didnt this this would cause such an uproar. and for all those who say that i should make it a broader statement and not just target america, that would be a lame design. im not a fan of political correctness and i was just trying to present something in a simple manner, if you dont like the idea then you have every right to give it a zero just dont go off on some stupid tangent about issues i AUGHT to be addressing. if everyone here is so pro-trees and conservation , i dont see how so many people are against this design, so instead of gunking up my comment wall with disgruntled comments, next time score it, and then youll be done in time to catch the end of the o'reily factor.

My initial thought was that the picture of the wealthy American could be replaced by an actual swine, making the design and joke more subtle. However, I realized that if that was the case, people would be even more confused about the true meaning of the swine (it referring to the wealthy rather than common Americans).

bsweber on Jun 28 '07 i think the drawing is great. i think that the 'controversy' does not arise over the fact that this is 'poking fun at americans'; many other designs have done the same. it just so happens that most of the other designs of this nature have been very poorly executed. when people see a design that has merit, and it happens to rub them the wrong way, this is what happens.
that being said, imo: design = awesome idea = just ok (in that it just doesn't happen to be that original) |

5. Straight up, people should chill the heck out. The art and execution are absolutely fantastic (God, what nice style!) and any product capable of causing this much stir and controversy is completely amazing. I think everything about this is amazing. Especially the "America" as opposed to N.America- it adds to the Rudyard Kipling, HMS Beagle kind of feel that I love so much about it.

That really doesn't bother me at all. It's just lowest common denominator humor. You know the kind, where people insult another group of people or way of life in a really simple form, without any of the really intelligent biting satire. Its like when a comedian is failing on stage and he says "george w. bush sucks" and the crowd laughs.
Granted, you did present it in an interesting manner, but its not enough to raise it above its boring and humble roots. This may all sound like im giving it a 0, but im not. |
