I'm giving it a 5. I think the illustration is beautiful, but I don't think I'd wear it.

Kallass: It's as the poster above said. Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet. The name of the tshirt is quoted from the play.

Wonderful concept and illustration - they truly are from two opposing houses! Though I'm not sure dogs and cats are 'alike in dignity', haha. Not sure I'd wear it, but it's great. Maybe a splash of colour - red blood and a rose? - and something to make the reference to R&J more obvious, as I wouldn't have got it without the title. (I think White Ninja has affected my brain - first thing I thought when I saw the bottle was "Pirate Juice: The Ultimate Refreshment".) If you ditched the furry border and made it look like they were in a stately mausoleum... And, ooh, just had an idea! It would be awesome if you could work in "Mondogues and Catulets" in there or something. XD

its really funny! I like it-- but I think if the colours were different it would be even better. Needs more contrast - grey with grey a little drab.

I know what you're going for, but I think it would be cuter without the death =(
OrangeRadioKitty
OrangeRadioKitty on Jun 26 '07
Lovely, I understood without the title! However, the cat looks a bit too happy in death. I think the design could also be brought out a little more with some tweaks.

it's the weird fuzzy layers around the illustration that I don't like, and I think that is what Kallass was trying to say in his broken english. take those away and a 5 from me! 4 for now.

i think it needs a bit of colour somewhere in the design.

it's kinda boring right now...

The outline is weird, at first I thought they'd both been swallowed by a larger animal.

Romeo & Juliet?

That's a lot of warm and fuzzy going on there.

Neat concept.

Hi...and thanks for all your comments and suggestions so far! I'd like to respond on a few things, in particular on the abstract design element I decided to envelope "Romeo and Juliet" with...some people seem confused by it, but it is not anything particular or literal other than a design element which I used to try to give a sense of them being "together in death." Are some people able to "see" how I used this to tie them together? I agree, if viewed a certain way, it could be confusing...if viewed literally it almost reminds me of a womb, but it was one of those spur of the moment decisions I made after finishing the main illustration. I actually like it and think it "works"...I like to combine realistic and abstract elements to add interest, impression or mood...I think it enhances the overall design visually but I am wanting to know if more people see it as confusing or at least some people see or understand how I used it...please comment!

As for the gray, dismal colors...intentional! It looks gloomy because it IS gloomy! A little black humor...

As for the cat's expression...well, I drew from a photo of my sleeping cat. (My cat does that a lot:) ....That's their mouth structure even at rest! I personally think the expression adds to the dark humor of this particular dog/cat design...the eerie sense of tranquility now that these 2 lovers are together!! I also didn't think it needed any blood...but I want to hear more what people's thoughts are on this...

I do wish I would have included a rose, didn't think of that...

I like the montdogue and catpulet idea too, that's funny, Vindemiatrix!!!

if the cat's been stabbed, shouldn't it be bleeding? that might be a good way to add some color...

and "Mondague and Catulet" is very clever!

Mandyhello on Jun 27 '07
I agree with noodlyappendage.. I just see two dead animals, and that makes me sad.. without the title above the illustration, I don't think this would be clever/recognizable at all (unless you recognize poison and the knife being associated with R&J.. obviously a lot of us did, but I think most people are going to see a dead dog and cat..)

hon, first thing's first: DON'T DEFEND YOUR WORK! it makes u an ezy target. and many people here can be quite 'real', in layman's terms, 'downright sick with anger and envy'. don't let them harsh your design buzz. just throw your ideas out there and hope they don't keep picking the same dang things over and over and over again.

by the way, i didn't get the R&J thing right away, either. they look like they're either in a fur womb or asleep on the guest's coats on thanksgiving. and in 69 position they must've went out sniffin'! kinda romantic... and kinky. i think i have to go now.... BYE!

and yes the 69 action is tres fun

nice reference and cute design, but i don't care for the echoing border.

   bortwein on Jun 28 '07
I'd say without the furry outline around the cat and dog this would be pretty good. I like the Romeo and Juliet reference. Placement would work fine centered as well.

event382 on Jun 28 '07
I agree with some of the previous comments about the outline thing not working. I think if it is going to be left in the design, it needs to look different in either texture or color than the animals. At first glance, it looks more like one big weirdly shaped animal than the outline of a cat and a dog. 4
heyheyitsme
heyheyitsme on Jun 28 '07
Thanks for your comments! Guess some people don't care for the echoing border...and some would like to see it in another color!

I have used 5 colors in this design, all of which are contained in the main part. So what color would someone want to see the border be if not the grays and white? The only thing I could think of is changing the black outline to the darkest gray (fill would stay the same on poison and knife)...and that would open up another color...say a rose color? And then the rose could be added as well...thought there would be no green for leaves. Do people really like the rose idea? I'm just asking opinions...of course I kind of still like it just as it is, but I realize people have all different thoughts that are interesting to consider...
heyheyitsme
heyheyitsme on Jun 28 '07
P.s. maybe I could get a green in by dropping the white, and making the poison sign the lightest gray (of the shirt)

It reminded me of an old, probably now banned cartoon where a mouse got a cat and a dog very drunk and I think they shot themselves or stabbed each other or something. It was frightening yet it was a regular old kiddies cartoon. It made me think of that first. And I'm an English student. D'oh.

Love it, though.

LOVE the idea, but the design is confusing and doesn't read well. More contrast, maybe if the dog and cat elements had more room to 'breathe' around them, and it would definitely buy this.

i like the concept, and i like the animals, and i like the concept again, but the outline is really awkward. it looks like they're laying on a splayed skunk. other than that though, nahice.

vixyish
vixyish on Jul 02 '07
Hrm. I really don't think the outline works. I understand your explanation of what you were trying to do with it, but I don't think it accomplishes what you meant it to. It does two things to my eyes-- one, it makes them look like they're glowing, which tends to make me think you're going "look, isn't this happy and shiny?" which, y'know, it isn't. And two, it actually detracts from the animals themselves-- that is, it literally makes it harder to tell what they are. I saw the cat's face right away, but I actually had a bit of a struggle parsing out what the dog was, specifically due to the outline.

cute idea - not sure I like the furry wrap. This might even be good with the title under it as a caption, in some sort of pretty script.
