About my design

by sooty
I apologise in advance to anyone I have missed off, it has been a painstaking process narrowing down the rock genre. Please don't give it a rubbish score if I have missed off your favourite band. I've tried to keep it pure rock, so I've left out metallica and bands that could be classed as pure metal. I have also left out 'rock and roll' artists such as the beatles and Elvis, otherwise there would be just too many.

If there is any genuine rock I have missed off then let us know, I'm sure they can edit it if it gets printed.

Green day needs to go. First of all it's punk, and second it's no good (at least not in comparison to the otherwise legends you've listed)

And please remember to spell Jimi correctly as some one else mentioned.

Btw, isn't Eric Clapton mainly a blues musician? I'm not really a big fan of his, so I wouldn't quite know, but..?

I think you're in dangerous waters, trying to appease everyone's varied taste in music. IMHO, you should change the technical stuff (JIMI Hendrix!), but leave the rest of the names. Remember, you can't please everyone, and if you try, you'll just make even more people upset. Absobloodylutely brilliant concept, however. 5$

Beatles

Diff font but absolutely cool!
mushrush
mushrush on Jun 09 '07
It is a great idea, but yeah, there's no real way to pull it off and keep enough people happy to appeal across the board. No matter what your metrics are for determining who goes where and who makes it onto the list, probably more than half the audience is going to wish you did it differently.

Perhaps there's a more generic way to do it... maybe with smaller illustrations that look like the bands/artists in question but aren't spelled out? I dunno. I know I wouldn't wear it myself even though I love the concept. Just because I don't agree with the worth of all the folks in the lineage, especially not near the top.

Also, @Grillsovs, Eric Clapton is considered blues a lot of the time, but he was the guitarist for Cream, and they were clearly rock, for what it's worth. I personally think Clapton's the most overrated guitarist alive, but that's beside the point. :P

But yeah, the main potential gripe I'm actually going to voice is this: You've left out the Beatles but included the Eagles?

appologies for speling. Like I said I did think about putting the beatles on but then if rock and roll is included then Elvis would have to go and where would it end!? as someone has spotted, there are already more bands than layers! I would consider taking off green day though, I thought they were more punk rock than pure punk but maybe you're right. There's always going to be someone people don't like in there but it doesn't change the fact they are part of rock history which is what the design is about, rather than just a list of bands you like.

thank you for your kind words so far

green day should definitely be out of there if you're only including pure rock. and maybe instead of jack white, put the name of his band.

i would also suggest a different font, maybe handwrittenish? i dunno about copyrights and junk, but maybe try to draw the logos (for the bands that have them).

i really dig this concept. (lolol)

A good concept, but you're never going to get the perfect mix of bands. The font's not so hot either.

Why don't people use the critique section for heaven's sake? This could have been a kick ass shirt with a few tweaks.
sooty
   sooty on Jun 09 '07
I used the times font as I wanted it to have a kind of textbook diagram kind of feel to it. the different bands have such different styles that using their fonts and logos didn't look right. I think the more neutral font gives it a less involed, more of an observer kind of look to it.

i get your point with the font, but i'd also prefer something that looks more like handwriting, as someone suggested before. i don't think the logos would work because that would make it way too crowded and divert the attention from the main point, namely the guitar.

i also really love the idea with the telegraph poles.

anyway, great design, good luck with it getting printed!

I agree with the above. The Sedimentary Rock and the graphic is super cute. I'd definitely buy it if it was just that. However, I like it the way it is now, but I wouldn't buy it. I don't like half the bands on the shirt. Maybe you should make another version of it without the names?

Geology related names would be pretty cheesy.

It's kind of a bind between trying to please everyone (never will happen) and the idea of the sub (which wouldn't really be as cool without names..?)

In the end it's your sub so I'd stick with what you want.

And the suggestion about putting telephone lines for the strings is grand.

vixyish
vixyish on Jun 10 '07
Heh. Seeing all the people going "Add band x" and "no way on band Y"... I think the only conclusion you can draw is that you're never going to please everyone, that's just too subjective, so you should stick with what you think works. DON'T go for a more generic way to do this as someone suggested... that would ruin the joke utterly.

This is awesome as it is. Stick to your guns!

(matthijs)
   (matthijs) on Jun 10 '07
The concept is cool, but with some improvements in execution it could be so much better. Like someone mentioned before, I don't think you need the bands up there (I would NEVER wear a shirt with Bon Jovi on it for example, except when it says 'Kill Bon Jovi').

The top of the guitar looks a bit too flat and if you decide to keep the type, you can do better than that.

It's a little odd that Jack White is by himself. The White Stripes are legendary enough to be named with all those other bands, but singling Jack out is just an insult to Meg.

Personally, I think the design speaks for itself and the text isn't warranted, though I do like the idea behind the text. You're not going to please everyone, but I'd certainly buy it if there were no band names.

So far as your argument against including Elvis... I don't even like Elvis, but I recognize that he was instrumental in the birth of rock and roll. What he did then may not sound like Rock now, but it's one of the places it started. =)
notquiteestella
notquiteestella on Jun 11 '07
Since no one is ever going to be totally happy with the band choices, maybe do genres of rock? Label them punk, grunge, metal, classic, garage, etc and leave the specific band names out; it might please more people that way.
jaz999
jaz999 on Jun 11 '07
Who is Jack White?

Some people have questioned Eric Clapton's appearance, so could we compromise and just say Cream? I also doubt the Beatles weren't rock legends, although they did a bit of everything.

All that said, I'll have to agree that notquitestella's idea of naming the various genres could make the design better. Or simply leave them out, the image is strong on its own and deserves to be a winner.

i digress

it's just too hard to please everyone, so perhaps have a list that goes on and fades out- so that it hints at the bands left off?

I realize this may have been said as I've read a zillion comments now and only made it halfway, but what about listing epic moments in rock instead? Beatles on Ed Sullivan, Woodstock, etc.? Maybe people would be slightly less picky?

K3VLAR
K3VLAR on Jun 12 '07
great design and i know its been said a million times but seriously lose green day. to say that they are part of rock history is ridiculous. They are a terrible band that sold out and they sound like a dog taking a huge shit on a guitar. Meatloaf? I mean come on. Bon Jovi is a pretty boy and can't play guitar for shit and there are way more bands that are more influential to rock history. What about the Clash or the Ramones?

Also to say that you are doing only rock is impossible. Every band on that list could be labeled under something other than rock. So open your list to the true rock musicians that have influenced the world.

Elvis is a must, The Beatles are a must, The Ramones, The Clash, Johnny Cash maybe. I don't know I just think the idea needs to be perfected before I can vote for it. Think about it buddy, Its your design so do what you want. But if the shit bands stay on there and you forget some of the ones that matter the most then you'll have one less customer.

As many have pointed out, there is some contention when it comes to the bands you've selected. Meat Loaf, that's funny. And I hate U2, BUT I understand how U2 fits in the line of Rock development (Meat Loaf, Bon Jovi, even Nirvana (more grunde/birth of alternative than rock) seem more like popular fad bands than inovators of rock).

Semantics aside, the idea is really great, very clever. If anything should be changes, I'd wiki rock and start with Elvis, include the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and drop Jovi (no offense, Jon) and Green Day.
sooty
   sooty on Jun 13 '07
I was going to start with elvis but he seemed to be more rock and roll then rock. the beatles, fine they can go in. The ones at the top aren't necesarily inovators of rock, the bands are listed in the order of first album release ( according to wiki research). I thought it was interesting to see how the previous artists informed and influenced the more modern ones above them up to the present rather than it all being classic rock legends from yesteryear.

I apologize, I'm not usually so critical.

I really do think you're better off with just the guitar design, and even then, make the knobs and whatnot look more like actual geographical forms.

I'd be proud to create such controversy out of such a simple design.

As far as removing the names completely, I think that's a little silly and rather too PC for my taste. You can't please everyone; hell, call me peanut wants Johnny on there (no offense to Johnny, but I think it's detracting from the original idea a bit).

Again, this is great as it is. Yeah, I vote the Beatles should be on there, and I don't agree with Green Day and I think it's too early in Jack White's career to put him on a history of rock shirt, but quite frankly whatever you choose to put on there is fine, and in FINE PRINT at that! Anyone who says "I won't wear a shirt with so-and-so on it" is just unable to see the big picture.

Thank you for all your comments. I know it's going to be impossible to please everyone but as I said earlier, it's not meant to be a list of bands you like, it's supposed to illustrate rock history. Ok green day can come off. Ok the beatles can go on. But I think Jack white should stay, he may be early in his career but he is the top soil so I think this is ok. and jonny cash is country not rock.

having said that, the text in the design is all editable so if it gets printed threadless can put who they like in it.
