I love it, but the cat is bothering me a bit...Maybe if the cat had a shadow under it and if it was also a shade of green like the bonsai...?

Very similar Bonsai Gardener. Still well done, however.

I would like it better without the sale/i.d. tag.

But still, great design, great colors. 4.

The tree looks like a photoshop filter. The cat does not. If the tree were in a style more similar to the cat, I would like this a lot more.

no, its still a bonsai, because it means tree in a pot (as far as I remember)

It does. The original bonsais were found by Chinese merchants growing in small cracks in rocks, which limited their growth.

I've never actually seen Bonsai Gardener - it's very good. If that won, so should this! =)

No yours should not win...because Bonsai Gardener was actually well done. The art on this is very sloppy. It's clearly live traced. When you can tell it's been live traced, then guess what? It's not successful.
Also, the concept on this is 1/100th as clever as Bonsai Gardener.
Bonsai Gardener, you look at, and you know exactly what is going on right away. In this, you have a cat standing next to a tree. Infact without the tag (with HORRIBLE typography) the "concept" would be lost. Sorry if I come off as sounding rude, but you seem a bit arrogant, plus you actually seem to think this still has a chance of being printed. Not to burst your bubble, but...it won't. It's been done. And it was done MUCH better.

For some reason you never come off as anything but rude...

I am by no means arrogant, and I don't attest to being the best artist in the world. If I say "If that won, so should this", it's not being arrogant, it's selling my design. Perhaps I should say "My God, you're right, everyone vote 0 for this abomination now!", just to make sure I don't offend anyone?

I have no illusions as to the chances of this being printed; 10 out of the top 300 designs? No chance.

There are several comments on this page and the critique for this design that the tree looks good. That is all I care about. If I can use a tool to get a job done in half the time with good results, I'm going to do it; that's just common sense. Believe it or not, I've got better things to do with my time than sit and trace 2,500 tiny leaves on a tree.

I am all for constructive criticism, indeed it's the very basis of this site, but your comments are needlessly vituperative.

That's the thing though... it doesnt look good. Live tracing produces terrible results (unless your tracing a crisp high resolution line drawing).

Believe it or not, I've got better things to do with my time than sit and trace 2,500 tiny leaves on a tree.

Admitting that youd rather be lazy than to spend time perfecting your design isnt the best way to market it.

My suggestion? On your next design, try spending a little more time with it. Good design isnt made by using shortcuts.

Thanks for your input. Just for the record, it doesn't look good In your opinion; other people like it. Takes all sorts.
Torakamikaze
   Torakamikaze on Jun 15 '07
this is true... i wasnt trying to bash your design or anything... i just think the outcome of live trace is really tacky looking, and designs can achieve a much clearly and more pleasing look when the time is taken to draw it out, rather than by pushing the live trace button. But yeah, that's just my opinion though, good luck!

When I saw this I first noticed the kitty and thought how happy the cat would be if he was stumbling upon a zen garden instead of a bonsai tree. I'm sure someone's done a design with this idea before, but it does seem that a cat would be delighted to find such a gigantic "litterbox."

After a quick google image search I found a kitty with a litterbox zen idea (northern sun catalog), but not a cat coming upon a full-size zen garden. Maybe I saw it in a comic somewhere? At any rate, I can only imagine how excited my cats would be to find something like that.

Thanks guys.

A zen garden should be easy to draw, it's just geometric shapes. I'll do a critique for it and if it gets to print I'll get you one Mephitine =)

Thanks, I'd love to see it. I have ideas like mad for shirts, but my sketches look like crap. Life would be so much easier if I had both inspiration AND skill. Of course life would be even easier if I just had a ton of money. Yep. That would be best of all.
