About my design

I dont think i need to explain what "buying the farm" means but the "my little pony" reference might be harder to pickup on. p51's were sometimes referred to as "ponies". so there.

Text needs to go, and the wings on the horse might well be wings on the guy, the way things are positioned... I like it, but those things are too wrong to buy it, sorry.

1. the text is a my little pony reference thats totally rocks.
2. the wings are on the guy and if you thought about it, that would be kinda of obvious. as for the expression, check out my blog about it.

also.. lol, i forgot one layer in the design thats in the larger version. i think it helps setting the wings straight. =)

bah! owned by self it seems =() ive shown the design to alot of ppl and the threadless crowds are the first to misunderstand it =/ anyways, the wings and text stay. feel free to rip my concept and re-design this yourself. perhaps the vagueness of the wings actually adds something?
zoom in (the wings look better here)

Perhaps people are misunderstanding it 'cause you've mixed so many metaphors. ... a horse with wings and a propeller attached to it's feedbag (sorry, that's how it looks) is supposed to make me think simultaneously of dead soldiers from World War II, a cutesy children's toy from the '80s and a song from 1965 about a man who's angry at his woman for driving her car too fast (and probably other things.) "Bought the Farm", whatever it originally meant, is now used mostly in a joking way and I think it trivializes the deaths of soldiers who sacrificed their lives for others. (it's tacky. If you meant to honor them, why intentionally make a "My Little Pony" joke?)
I'm also not sure why he's holding Santa's hat.
but hey- what's to misunderstand!
Other than that, it's a pretty good drawing.

"a horse with wings and a propeller attached to it's feedbag (sorry, that's how it looks)"
- thats what it is.

"Bought the Farm, whatever it originally meant"
- you get to decide what it means now? no

"think simultaneously of dead soldiers from World War II"
- not think, look.

"a cutesy children's toy from the '80s"
- still an active brand.

"it's tacky. If you meant to honor them"
- i sure as hell didnt and p51 were somtimes called ponies.

"I'm also not sure why he's holding Santa's hat"
-agree, that would be wierd.

I think the text is unnecessary - the image is communicating the pilot's death well enough

I think the pilot would look even better on the horse so
it would be more obvious that he is the owner of the
wings. Also, it would look like they both are going to
heaven instead of the pilot only.

just a note : "bought the farm" = to die
classicoke
   classicoke on Jun 06 '07
the text rocks. period. if threadless wants to print this but without the text i might reconsider but ill probably decline.

animals dont go to heaven so that would be wierd... well, thats what a fanatic (christian) told me atleast. also according to him there are no babies in heaven either but he wouldnt exaplain =/

bought the farm= die OR perhaps actually surviving the war and buying the farm.

THEY
THEY on Jun 06 '07
I scrolled down here to recommend dropping the text from the sleeve. Now I see you're being cocky about it. That is not what this is for. Use the critique section for your pride.

Not only is it pointless and unlikely to print because of it but also the style doesn't match the illustration and the badge itself is cheaply designed.

The main subject of the shirt is beautiful. Don't be a jerk.

Like it, but reminds me of tank girl a little too much. Not that tank girl isnt great!
mezo
   mezo on Jun 07 '07
I hardcore agree with THEY.

As for this design, I find there is simply too much information in it, which makes it cluttered. Using 1 color enhances that messy look as aspects are getting lost.

The front design & sleeve design don't match up very well either. Front feels serious in execution and sleeve feels more playful & childlike (even though the message is dire).

I think your main idea is interesting, but feel like to tried too hard with references in design.

actually I love it. i think everyone is being a little idiotic and reading too much into it. its a great idea and I like the text
nineteen.
nineteen. on Jun 09 '07
front is perfect. i'd love to see this on slate or charcoal.

the sleeve deal isn't my cup of tea, just because the farm reference is already in the fact that there's a horse, etc. if anything, it robs much of the front image of its duality.

put this on a darker color shirt and i'd buy.

JackieOcean
JackieOcean on Jun 11 '07
The illustration is strong enough on its own without the text on the sleeve - there's enough in the image to convey the message. Spelling it out isn't necessary.

And I know it's been said before, but the wings DO look like they're on the horse. The wing that's between the horse and the pilot looks like it's coming from the other side of the horse. If the linework continued down to the pilot a little bit - covering part of the horse (more than just the corner of the handle on the saddle) - it would be much clearer.

i still think that your presentations are hurting your final score, i really like the large preview, but not so interested in the initial sub, its all cramped and there is too much overlapping the design, pick a color and you won't have to use so much space showing the options.

also, take a piece of humble pie brutha' travis is an amazing artist, even the best artist can learn a thing or two from another artist... but do as you like.
