Yeah, seriously. I love the visual for Hard Candy, and it's a great design. But it's the girl from the cover. :-/

gee, and I was only going to criticize your spelling, and not for the "u".

"I lost the bottom of my fireplace to u."
nice sentiment.
hippozzz
hippozzz on Jun 05 '07
First off, this is stolen artwork.

Second of all, hearth means a fireplace as blandford pointed out. And how do you lose the bottom of a fireplace? It's rather large and hard to steal.

Third of all, U isn't a word. Perhaps you would like to finish the word with a y and an o.

This is crap all around.

Lucas, Lucas, Lucas! Looks like you landed yourself in some hot water! This is a pretty lame attempt to pass someone else's work off as your own, and that's...

...PLAGIARISM!

Why, oh why did you think you were going to get away with it? This community is too smart for this, and so are you.

Do your own work next time. You've got the talent and it will pay off in the end.

Zero.

this is cute. it may be like the artwork from a dvd cover, but its definitely different. the girl isnt real, and im pretty sure there's no butterflies on the dvd cover. besides, everyone plargarizes these days. if youre in highschool, when was the last time you actually typed a whole paper? you people are too critical to even notice how awesome this is. 4 and $

Vote against plagerism!
mephitine
mephitine on Jun 06 '07
The plagiarism is icky, but the "hearth" thing is just bizarre.

Um...angelsxwingsx...plagiarism was always a cardinal sin when I was in school, but that was a very long time ago. I can say with complete honesty that I *NEVER* plagiarized. Ever. But then again, I always loved writing, so it wasn't a problem.

When did plagiarizing become so permissable? For us, any plagiarized paper was given an automatic F, and our teachers didn't have the internet to check for phrases, they just KNEW. I guess it's a different world now. Why aren't the teachers using the internet and other resources to check for this? It's so easy to just plug in a phrase or two!

But back to the design at hand. Even though the main design element is a posterized image taken from another source, I like that you've added some changes that alter the original intent. If you go back and redo this with your own artwork, then remove the unnecessary text, you'll have something compelling.

Most Threadlessians can tell you that text is generally seen as a crutch for an incomplete design. If you need text, you should probably go back and re-examine your concept, to make the picture tell the story on its own. Sometimes text is unavoidable (or even essential), but in this case you can easily do without it.

steviec on Jun 06 '07
Don't worry about teachers - they're well into googling plagiarism! Nothing could be simpler.

xardox
xardox on Jun 06 '07
Ok... everyone crying plagiarism. So because the movie hard candy never made a tshirt exactly like this one, We never get to purchase and wear one like it?

Ok... If SOMEHOW this was stealing profit from the movie Id have agreed. But this HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MOVIE. ITS A CLEVER USE OF THE COVER ART...

So what... you find ANY nice art that might be used in photoshop along with some other nice art and a good theme, and its plagirism... When did using stock images to build other images become such a violent offense to your artistic sensibilities?! ... You guys sicken me. ... The almighty Dollar and that little bulls**t called copywright infringment causes us all to cut our concepts and artistic drive into pieces.

Seriously... Once the F-ing copywright bulls**t expires... please for the love of god make this shirt again and tell all these a**holes to go to hell.

Dammit... Im so sick of the artistic community being controled by money and artistic liscense, and not by pure creative drive.

This art is good. Period... it doesnt matter if he used photoshop to stencil the actual real life image. It doesnt matter that the butterflys are all the same image, moved and copied with photoshop...

Simply this... Copywrites are an overused problem in the creative process. They put in place for a fairly good reason, but then they are overused and improperly used, to stall or stop somone elses creative drive. Anyone who cant see this, is too concerned with money to see art for what it really is.

The creative spirit of humanity. ...

i think the use of "u" at all, even in instant messenger or myspace, is tacky. i wouldn't wear it on a shirt unless it was part of something catchy... and i can't think of a situation in which that would arise.

and not capitalizing an I on a t-shirt is just lazy.
a for incredible
a for incredible on Jun 06 '07
also, in response to xardox:

if this were a better piece of art, people might not complain about copyright infringement. the fact of the matter is, it's not that well done. if you want to stand up for people's rights to creativity, maybe you should learn to recognize when creativity is present and when it's not.

i'd get it. take out the text though and i'd be more likely to get it. (and god ... why is everyone trippin over the graphic? i've seen tons of designs today that aren't exactly "original" either in terms of pulling other people's work. poo on them! kettle: meet black.)

people need to like, look at their designs before they submit so they actually use the right words. "YOU" is not hard to spell!!! and it would totally suck if someone stole my fireplace. :)

that said, i would really really like this if you took out the heart balloon thing and the text.
bananawally
bananawally on Jun 06 '07
i really like it but i would change "u" to "you" otherwise it seems a little odd and not as romatic or wistful. also the hearth thing is weird, im not sure if its supposed to be clever but just chang it to heart. i really love the graphics and the writing, the script font looks awesome and makes the design make more sense

it's too bad that everyone's being all crazy and giving 0's...
who cares if the silhouette of the girl is the same as 'hard candy'?
i mean really, who is that hurting.
the design looks sweet.
the text could be lost, and it's unfortunate that everyone is making issues about the spelling not being right, but we must remember that not everyone on threadless speaks english as their first language... plus people... read the comments!!! if one person points out the spelling, the next 10 don't have to do the same.... pretty sure you're not all the grammar-police.

anyway, i'd buy and wear this as it is. $5

Well...

I think that once someone's crossed the "plagiarism" line, they've waived their rights to constuctive criticism. A line must be drawn somewhere, otherwise you're saying, "Nice stealing, but maybe you should try to cover your tracks a little better".
