The answer to the age old question, "Does the Pope sh*t in the woods?"
ChunderMan
ChunderMan on May 09 '07
This has probably been done somewhere else in the world before, but I don't care, 'cause I'm not a member of the "I've Seen This Before" police. I'd buy it.

I've never heard that question, but now that you mention it, it's a damn good one. Hmm... I don't have the answer, but I'm going to dedicate the rest of my day to finding out for you. Over.

For those that do not know, it's a play on "Does a bear sh*t in the woods?"
steviec
steviec on May 09 '07
...but does a bear sleep in the Holy See?
maddingo
maddingo on May 09 '07
i'm trying to avoid getting all pissed off about stuff like this

but hey threadless would a sub of Muhammad taking a dump make it to the scoring?

cause if the answer is no.... well maybe you should think about letting these kinds of things up for the vote.

barong on May 09 '07
of course the pope shits in the woods!
barong
barong on May 09 '07
maddingo, no need to get worked up... im sure this can be solved by a shirt with a stereotypical religious figure from all religions dropping a deuce side by side.... everybody poops.

someone please draw this shirt... i would but can't really be bothered right now

maddingo, chilllll. It's a long-standing joke, it wouldn't make sense if it had Muhammad.
maddingo
maddingo on May 09 '07
i'm not unchilled actually

and I'm aware of the joke btw... it is told by people that are not especially respectful of millions of Catholics around the world.

I'm not suggesting someone make a does Mohammad crap in the woods sub

I'm asking if threadless would put it up for the voting?

Re. maddingo:

Ah, but "Is the Pope Catholic?" and "Do bears sh*t in the woods?" are both well-known rhetorical questions, and the transposition of Popes and bears is also conventional. Establish a rhetorical question about Mohammed in the comman parlance, and then associate it with another such question... if it becomes part of the cultural zeitgeist, it becomes fair game for a Threadless sub.

It's a Big Lebowski reference. Calm down, maddingo.

Gaff on May 10 '07
First of all, maddingo has a fair point that designers and all of us avoid mocking Mohammed and Islam generally on things like t-shirt designs.

This is partly because of fear of the reaction, but mostly because in western countries the dominant culture is one with a Christian history and influence, even if that influence is on the wane these days. I'm in favour of ribbing all religions and sky-fairy-believers, but it's valid to say that mocking Islam is usually best left to those who live in predominantly Islamic cultures - it's got more punch that way. Non-Muslims in the West can mock Christianity more easily because we're more intimate with it and because it affects our lives and culture more immediately.

Secondly, Catholicism hasn't exactly earned our respect by railing against condoms and thus helping the spread of Aids; condemning gays and lesbians; etc etc etc. The Vatican is an incredibly powerful and influential institution that abuses its position of influence over vulnerable people, and as such is ripe for mockery.

The design's not great, though.

It would be good if you could see a bear... doing something Catholic in the background.

Not sure what... chastising people with a sense of humour?

yeh, is the bear catholic, maybe sitting in background playing with a rosary

sjgrovo on May 11 '07
I'm with Gaff on this one - and I think Threadless WOULD let a shirt like this through for voting with mohammad on it... and this joke IS told by Catholics - i'm a Catholic and find this hysterical, people need to have a sense of humor about their beliefs... otherwise you become a zealot and start killing people..

regardless - i think it's a funny and cute shirt, nice simple design
JoNightshade
JoNightshade on May 12 '07
I'm not even remotely catholic and I would not feel good about wearing this. I don't like wearing stuff or doing stuff that mocks other people's sincere beliefs.

Fennecky on May 12 '07
Or maybe the Pope, taking a shit on Mohammed. haha. I'd buy it. Don't kill me. please.
bemky
bemky on May 12 '07
funny, but I think I agree that some people might find it offensive.
13strong
13strong on May 12 '07
Why is it offensive??? It's an illustration of a popular joke / phrase. It's not mocking the church or Catholocism, or even the pope - it's laughing at the absurdity of the phrase/situation.

Gah!

Bit of a debate going on here, but I've never seen it on a t-shirt before (though some others may have), and I think it's a good colourful design, nice one. *thumbs up* 5
