I just think it looks like the oven is his mother, like she just gave birth to him. I don't think she looks sad. In the story, he didn't come alive until after he was baked.

that's so weird that someone brought up it being a jewish gingerbreadman since that's what i was for halloween two years ago. i was a gingerbread man with one of those jewish caps. hrmph.
