i love references, but these are just too obscure for me. and the "oh, cute" factor is not high. sorry.
mabye you put too much thought into the thought behind it, rather than the execution. i'm stil undecided on a score though.
the interplay of the references is more interesting than the design. evangelinereed, Houellebecq is relatively obscure, you can find his stuff at most barnes & nobels and any residence hall.

I wikied the phrase, and it makes me angry how we shall never know what any aspect of it is. GAH! Fine, I shall make them up myself.
I love shirts that make you think :D $4 |
hmmm....interesting thoughts but not sure how it works on a t-shirt...a bit too obscure for me, i would have never got it in a million years without reading your comments
I like it on pink. I can see that you put a lot of thought into the ideas behind the shirt.
It did confuse me a bit, not being an artist. I like it on pink, though. Did I say that already? ( : |
okay, thanks a lot for the comments and critics so far!!!
@KM3: thanks for the comment! haha! @joolius: the both aspects of working with languages, the theory, linguistics (ogden) and practice, literature (houellebecq), i think. the thing is, i love the russel shirt and i always wanted a shirt as simple as that, but with a phrase that you possibly might get, at least, if the bearer tells you. |
oh, and here's houellebecq.
very nice design!
I love the rabbit, even if doesn't remind me on the french guy. I thouth of Frank Kozik, you know, that rabbit with cigarette thing. 5$! |
I bloody love it, love houellebecq and the bizarre reference is awesome, and it does also remind me of Frank Kozik too, which again is awesome awesome awesome. $5.
i like the pink. i'd prefer the text in a simple line under the bunny...the red oval reminds me of the "as seen on TV" stickers.
And remeber: if you hate references, you can always think "oh, cute!"
It depends on the references. If they were Banksy references, the votards would've been clamouring for a print. C'est la vie.... |
About my design
I like secret hints on shirts, so that people can think "oh, cute", but they can also regocnize the references, thinking, "damn, that's awesome!" So I tried to include two of them:
First: "The gostak distims the doshes" is a quote by the linguist and philosopher Charles Kay Ogden, showing that you can say phrases that are grammatical correct, but are nonetheless meaningless. Check Wikipedia for details, if you like.
Second: I called the shirt "houellebunny", referring to french post modern novelist Michel Houellebecq. (Again, Wikipedia if you like) The bunny's habitus - the cigarette and the bag - refer to a well known picture of Houellebecq. I can post a link to it, when the design is in the running.
And last but not least: Yes I know, but I do love the Russel Shirt!
Works on most colors, I'd prefer denim or gold.
So feel free to comment and please be nice. Thanks a lot!
