About my design

Never know what you might get! Inspired by sweet take-out packaging and the many flavors of Maruchan.

Being Chinese, I get annoyed by how so many people believe that the entire Chinese population eats cats on a regular basis... I'd like it a lot better if the cat were a pig... And do people eat roosters? I thought we only ate hens. But I don't know.

I recommend getting rid of the text at the top, changing the cat to a pig and the rooster to a hen, and make the food look like noodles (right now it looks like a bowl of boogers).

piradical on Apr 15 '07
People in mainland china do eat castrated roosters called capons, I can't remember the chinese name, it's been a while since I had one. Never encountered anyone who ate cat though. Dog would be more appropriate. That shit is tasty.

Ewww!! There was a Chinese place around here that got shut down for having cats in the freezer. They said it was for personal cooking and not for selling to the public. Still, I don't fear that I'm getting a bowl full of kitty parts when I order out. I would change the cat to a pig though, the cat is just so typical. It's too overdone as a joke. Also, I don't feel you really need the background here. I found it just kind of distracting from the images you wanted me to see.

pixievix on Apr 16 '07
pig and changing the look of the noodles)--also, I really like the black bamboo leaves, they look great. Maybe a little bit of black detail on the pagoda? All that said: I seriously dig the composition, the colors, they style, & definitely the concept. I would spend part of my pittance of a grad student income on this shirt if it were tweaked slightly, and all my friends would envy me my excellent ramen fashion.

I think the cat is the whole idea, you should keep it. It wouldn't make sense without it. It's nice and subtle. If it said "Chinese Noodles, Now With 50% More Cat", then I'd agree about downplaying the cat. BTW, when you eat chicken, your odds are much greater than 50% you're eating a "rooster", since many of the hens are reserved for egg-laying duty. Plus, roosters (or more accurately, cockerels) grow larger and faster.

not sure really, do chinese people not find this racist humour, I wonder if similar types of humour were made towards food eaten by africans or indians would be considered fair game as humour, why is it ok regarding the chinese?
dacat
   dacat on Apr 16 '07
We had a sub with this cat thing before and a takeout box, so this idea is hardly original. I'm too lazy to go find it. I did find that one hilarious because it was much more obvious. I am Chinese and don't eat cat, nor have known any place in my life to have cooked cats, but I do have a sense of humor!

L337Kirara
L337Kirara on Apr 16 '07
i find it very interesting how racist humor against chinese people is seen as okay. if this was a black/white kind of thing, people would find it inappropriate, even for shirts that aren't so blatantly obvious about their stereotypes.

i know for a fact that a lot of chinese people are passive about this sort of thing, but that doesn't mean that it's alright for people to play off these stereotypes.

i do have a sense of humor and i do think that this design is well executed. at the same time i know that if this shirt got printed it would only perpetuate the ignorance already seen in this thread.
Yabi Kuro
Yabi Kuro on Apr 16 '07
Actually, L337Kirara, white/black jokes are really common and I don't know anyone that takes offense to them. It's usually Asians who are offended.

lol yeah its pretty racist. But for some reason the most Asian jokes I heard were from asians. So you might see mostly asians wearing this if it gets printed.

did that sound racist?

I'm not offended but I feel bad for the kitty ! I can understand why others would be offended though and because I think this design is good enough to stand on it's own with out the joke, I say put 'normal' animals on it - you'll still do well!

Oh, and I love the bamboo!

I lived in mainland china for a year and I don't get the cat thing. Eating dog is SO common that it seems like the obvious choice for me. I mean, you can be walking down the street and see a sign with big beautiful dogs like labs and collies, etc. and then realize that they are advertising yummy dog! No signs for cat, ever. Oh, and by the way, I ate rooster all the time. Yummy!

too many things in this shirt annoy me. the building, with the bamboo flanking it, along with the animals, are the only things that don't. what i do find annoying and offense are these images in conjunction with the text. this shirt would only serve to further the stereotype that all chinese eat cats. which, in and of itself, isn't necessarily a bad thing (remember, in the hindu religion cows are sacred and not to be eaten) but, nevertheless, it's kinda rude to perpetuate these sort of ignorant ideas. honestly, i'm not trying to rant (and kinda failing) but you should base your humor on something that doesn't promote a negative stereotype. or even a positive one at that (like the idea that all asians are good at math. and eat cats.)
snoj
snoj on Apr 18 '07
It seems a lot of people question if this design offensive or not. I'm not Asian, the nearest I am to Asian is being Caucasian and I don't find the shirt offensive. What I do find offensive is that there are people who can't laugh at themselves.

I may not like the idea of eating a cat because I have a few as pets. So what that in some areas of Asia the people have a taste for cat and dog? Besides have any of us tasted cat? Maybe those Asians are onto something.

Great use of colours, nice figure shapes. I agree with getting rid of the text on top and making the noodles more stringy looking.

I'm not sure how I feel about the cat. Changing it to a pig takes away the commentary, but it is kind of offensive. If I were Chinese, I might wear it to be kind of a jerk about people's incorrect beliefs that I ate cats. I think the shirt would lack a punch if the cat were a pig though.

When I first saw the shirt, I actually thought of the Chinese Zodiac. I like the rooster for that very reason.
