red is psychologicaly understood as a "warm" color, that's why I think being red really pushes the message. Blue is really the warmest color in physics but gives you a sense of "serenity" and calmness...

I would like this to be a global warning also ;)

PS: If it looks like something you like I'm happy! It means I'm grabbing the designers who already made impressive images that stuck on your mind ;)

The sun always did it's job and so did our amosphere! but at this rate we are destroyng our "protective shield" and turning our atmosphere into a glass house, that not only doesn't protect us but also heats the planet even more.

Please watch "An Incovienient Truth", there is no way I could explain it in a better way.

"Objection: The sun is the source of warmth on earth. Any increase in temperature is likely due to changes in solar radiation.

Answer: It's true that the earth is warmed, for all practical purposes, entirely by solar radiation, so if the temperature is going up or down, the sun is a reasonable place to seek the cause.

Turns out it's more complicated than one might think to detect and measure changes in the amount or type of sunshine reaching the earth. Detectors on the ground are susceptible to all kinds of interference from the atmosphere -- after all, one cloud passing overhead can cause a shiver on an otherwise warm day, but not because the sun itself changed. The best way to detect changes in the output of the sun -- versus changes in the radiation reaching the earth's surface through clouds, smoke, dust, or pollution -- is by taking readings from space."

I don't know if someone who didn't know what this was could get the design without the text, but using text is a weaker choice than looking for ways to get your point across without text (unless the text adds something to the design, which I don't believe it does in this case). I would get rid of the text, and if your design can stand alone good, and if it can't, go back to the drawing board with it.

"Objection: Global warming is a hoax perpetrated by environmental extremists and liberals who want an excuse for more big government (and/or world government via the U.N.).

Let's see this from a completely different and logical point of view:

Let's just say Global Warming is a lie put out by a conspiracy of flower growing hippies. let's just pretend that (many will believe). What are the consequences of taking those unnecessary measures environmentalists defend:

- The air will be cleaner, since we are using non pollutant energy sources. We weill be able to watch the stars in any city of the world (damned stars!). We will have healtier lungs and less lung cancer (poor doctors losing jobs). Top of all, oil sellers will go to unemployment and their know generosity for sharing their profits with the rest of the world will no longer be!

- We will have to buy those ugly CFL's bulbs (that cost three times more and last at least 5 years) instead of those retro and nostalgic tungstenium lamps our godfathers used and we used to love also (even though they gave virtually half the ligthing, but who likes light, me not.... blooooooddd, give me blood).

- We will have to let go of our man empowring vehicles, man will be lesser manly (with smaller penises) and population will steadilly diminish in consequence. We will not be able to run down old ladies and kids with our hummers and convertibles :( We will have to walk a lot more and spend a lot less money at the gym to get in shape. We again will be healtier and contribute to the extinction of the doctor (an endangered species)

- Our houses will be lot harder to maintain since we now have to be energy/water efficient. No more leaving all televisions in every room always ON (we will loose our precious second life) No more nigths feeling cold because our heating system now works towards heat regulation and preservation. No green grass in the middle of the desert (desert species endangered also).

I could go on and on with these BAD and DEVILISH consequences of believing global warming is true. Damned liars they wat to ruin our world!

One thing climate always changed obviously! Who said taht is a lie? But that's not real problem is it? The thing is because of the "glass house effect" climate will get warmer and warmer and it will not cool down again, that's the real point. I think the design is great and this is proved by the debate it has sparked.
It my opinion that a good design should get people talking, even if some people are missing the point. It’s also my opinion that we have nothing to lose from combating climate change / global warming and going green. I would be more inclined to wear the above tee shirt if it wasn’t on red, I can fully understand why it’s on red i.e. “warming” but what if it was on a green colour linking back to “green” issues? This is only an idea and may not work…. In regards to the text it would still look good without the text but many people may miss the point about global warming so it a case of which is more important.

I'm saying there is a problem and we should at least try to figure out it's extentent, I'm just asking you to go out and inform yourself and take your own conclusions based on impartial opinions.

Global warming is happening that's not a question, the question is if our western lifestyle is worsening a natural ocurrence. And if is we shoul do something about it, simple things, simple sacrifices to guarantee future generations have the rigth to live in an healthy planet.

You can pretend the is nothing happening, that doesn't make problems go away. Six year olds know this, so it's sad to see "adults" behaving this way...

And I bet nothing will happen, mostly because there are persons that think about the problems and try to solve it. I'm not like Bush, if you are not a part of the solution then you are not a part of the solution, and that's all .

Just keep living your complete life and find your happiness ;)

Skipper6745
   Skipper6745 on Apr 04 '07
Six year olds nowadays also use the F word and see R rated movies regularly.

Today's children are a disgrace.

I believe that there is global warming, but I also believe that not long ago there was a fear of global cooling. The world changes over time, goes through cycles, and generally balances itself out.

I don't agree with the careless pollution happening, and I don't agree with wasteful use of large vehicles when only one driver is present, but I don't honestly think we could possibly do anything to stop a natural process.
menosketiago
menosketiago on Apr 04 '07
I'm not talking about stoping natural climate changes but of preventing the "green house effect" of making the problem go out of control.

There were several Ice Ages in man's history and warm periods also (medieval wam period) but there was no excess of Co2 in the atmosphere, was there? The problem with balanced systems is that if you insert an unexpected variable in the equation you can disrupt that balance.

About that perspective you have the movie "The Day After Tomorrow" were they go hollywood style exagerating the speed of those planetary antural measures. In the movie the eaths response to fast global warming is a non-predicted Ice Age. But that movie is nothing but science fiction, not to be taken to seriously.

Have you already seen the "An Inconvenient Truth" documentary at least? I think I'm not inteligent enough to explain it better than Mr. Gore did. He has years of experience in explaining the problem. Note that he is not going to run for president so he's not gaining a thing with this, so at least give the man a chance and hear what he's lecturing...

Note also that I'm not american, I'm not lef-wing, I'm not anti-capitalist and I am not what you would call an "environmentalist". Im' just a regular joe, that wants people to look at my work and think of what message I'm tring to get thougth...

If you believe it or not it's your choice. I love liberty and democraccy so I'll acept your opinion.

Just don't go voting this design negative just because you don't agree with me. If you can't be impartial just pass ahead without voting please ;)

I'm not going to repeat mysel vealcutletz see the data I've linked and you'll have answers to that.

Romans didn't live the last defrost mate, the last ice age was during the paleolithic (cavemans) and the last defrost was during the neolithic, that's why humans stopped being nomads and perfected artificial agriculture. That was also the birth of the first "cities" in the middle east, not romans, nor israelites.

And they didn't have something that came only with the industrial revolution on the 19th century, it's called POLLUTION. Ever heard about it?

Who can you prove your argument if don't even know what you are talking about?

I have seen for example the one quoted here "The Global Warming swindle"...

But I also studied the subject, read about it in the specialized press, read about it in several books. I've been reading about global warming since I was a kid, this is not new for me.

I know all about the other side also. Mr. Bush's Exxon, and the repeated pressures of the oil lobby to prevent clean energies from being developed. i know all about several "upcoming" eletric cars that never came to the market. I could go on ad on about the "other" side.

I was not saying not to vote at all, but I don't think I deserve 1's or less for this work designwise. If you can't be unbiased like you said very wisely, then maybe it's better to skip scoring . not only on this one but in every threadless submission...
menosketiago
menosketiago on Apr 04 '07
I guess now is time to start giving out advice of waht you can do to minimize your ecological impact ;)

1- Change all your old 60w bulbs (tungsten round bulbs) for CFL 's (compact fluorescent ligth). They cost more than the old bulbs but they last up to 5 years, give stronger light and consume up to 30% less eletricity. This means that aside from reducing your ecological impact you'll have smaller energy bills to pay. A win/win measure ;)

I'll be posting more tips as time goes by :P

What is this nonsense on the ice age??? No one ever said there was going to be another ice age... I never heard of that one.

In the "Day After Tomorrow" movie you see that, but it's plain science fiction.

Scientist have been discussin the green house effect for more than 20 years, but the progressive increase on temperature has turned this into a "red" topic. There is no lying in saying that last year was the hottest year in many centuries, and climatologists predict that the temperature will rise even faster from now on.

About being american, there are ignorant persons in every antion of the world, you can't balem only the USA for global warming. But it is true that they are the only G8 country refusing to sign the Kyoto treaty...
The Ending
The Ending on Apr 05 '07
It was widely believed and even taught in schools that a rise in temperature would melt the ice caps dumping freash water into the sea and this would upset the mid atlantic drift of warm water which would lead to no warm waters reaching eurpope and other places and would upset wind patterns bringing on an ice age.
menosketiago
menosketiago on Apr 05 '07
That's exactly the thesis behind the movie quoted, there is no scientific consensus on that one...

I like the color scheme and it looks good on red, but overall I don't think the design is that great, maybe if the world was melting INTO the words "stop global warming" or just "stop" it would be more effective and look less like a slogan tee. If people say it looks like something to them, then it looks like something to them, it's still constructive criticism, it's good to see your passionate about something, but I almost wonder if the shirt would be way more effective if it had a few ideas on HOW to stop global warming, instead of just "stop global warming". Nobody is gonna see this shirt and say " He's right, I'll stop global warming right now!" Then flick a switch somewhere.

overall i think the idea of a shirt to stop global warming is a positive thing, maybe if threadless had a competition for that subject alone and donated money for every shirt sold to wherever people can donate money to help the cause, like when they did the Katrina shirts, then your design could be an active part of the solution, but as it stands now all it does is just tell people that you don't like global warming, which isn't very effective at all.

So Global warming is a lie so I guess UN are just a bunch of liars sice this happened yesterday:

"The report said warming, widely blamed on human emissions of greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels, would cause desertification, droughts and rising seas and would hit hard in the tropics, from sub-Saharan Africa to Pacific islands.
(...)
The IPCC, which groups 2,500 scientists and is the world authority on climate change, said all regions of the planet would suffer from a sharp warming.

Its findings are approved unanimously by governments and will guide policy on issues such as extending the U.N.'s Kyoto Protocol, the main U.N. plan for capping greenhouse gas emissions, beyond 2012."

Like I said first this design is an attention getter, and I said to ask me what you can do to reduce your impact... nobody asked (means people know what to do) but I'm giving out the advise anyways :P

2 - Walk! The less you use your car the less Co2 you'll be producing and throwing into the atmosphere. Don't use you car for distances that could be made in a couple of minutes normal walking...

Personally 30 to 40 minutes walking is pretty acceptable distance not to drive a car. But there are alternatives, you can take a bus, a train, a subway... everytime you have mass transportations you should think of using them. Most of the times you'll get faster to work by using them instead of wasting hours in trafic.

Again personal example, everyday I walk 10 minutes to the train station, then make a 20 minutes train trip, 15 minutes of subway and 10 minutes walking again. This adds to 55 minutes diary trip. If I were to go by car I could take double time due to trafic and I would be polluting like crazy. Top of all, I would be spending a lot on fuel, money I use to go out to the movies and buy stuff I like! Note that I have a driver license and yet I got less than 10 times in a car since the year started.

Still there are places and trips that need to be done by car... There are places without mass transportation avaiable, etc.

If you really need to use a car then try to have a economic one. Buy cars with the lower fuel consuption you can, less fuel means more money and less pollution (if can afford an hybrid better!). Also try not to drive yourself alone, start carpools with people at your job, neighbours, etc... Note that if a car transports 4 persons it means 4x less pollution ;)

Bottom line, walking is not only cheap (the cost of food) and environment friendly but you will spare on going to the gym as many times. Another 2/2 win :p

I actually was okay with the shirt until you started shoving links down everyone's throat, then the whole thing turned me off =P

Actually links are here for everyone who wants to know more about the theme :P

I knew from the start that the chances of my design winning were almost null, I was actually surprised when the design didn't get sacked after 24 hours.

Like I said previously, designers have a responsability towards society. I feel like I done a little step in doing my share :|

Im sorry, cause you're nice, but I would never wear this.
I will vote 5 because Im nice too...
though, everyone is always telling me "stop global warming," so I say, "ok, what is global warming and how do you suppose I stop it?"
then they just give me a blank stare and say "I don't know", because no one has any idea what it is and how to stop it.

Also, I don't think keeping the thermostat on off is gonna do anything.

woops, sorry if that sounds mean, I don't mean for it to.

I understand what you are saying...

Actually to stop global warming all you need to do is reduce C02 emissions. Easier said than done =X

Obviously home emissions are the least of the problems, the real problem is industrial emissions. That's why the more people stand against it sooner the industries will have to take action.

Not mean at all! Considering all the rudeness and offensive remarks I've been soaking up, your honesty really is bliss ;)

I can't say I was not interested in winning but obviously by the way I had to defend the theme, it just crapped my chances of doing so =X

Oh well, I'm young and have time while I manage to survive :)

I like the design a lot but I think the font has to go. I would be really disappointed if anyone didn't understand the meaning of the shirt without the text.

I think the text is redundant... You can do away with it all together and then make the image larger.

Without the text, $4

I like on orange, and I do like it on blue or green but it takes a lot from the message (blue migth work by contrast)
