About my design

by ut pactum
"One fuel to rule them all, and in the darkness bind them."

A topic of scientific concern embedded into a pop culture metaphor. Sauron (flaming eyeball atop oil well) represents the fossil fuel corporations and the colorful cloaked figures represent alternative energy sources (wind, solar, water, & biological). What will the outcome of the battle be?

This is my first Threadless submission, so let me know what you think.

this is awesome.

the only suggestion i have is that 'solar' isn't 100% obvious as solar unless you understand the whole concept... perhaps a sun would be a little easier for the 'common-folk' to understand...

just a suggestion.

This is especially interesting since Lord of the Rings was already a metaphor for the damage caused by growing industrialism of Tolkien's time in the first place. (Check out some of Saruman's dialogue; Tolkien wasn't subtle.) Turning it back again, and updating to modern aspects of it... nice and meta.

I really like this. I like what you've done with the hobbits and Sauron.

i really like it & think its a cool idea but the colorful things seem out of place and awkward in the design

nice concept, would love to see it done better- simpler and more funky.

Lol... Great concept. But I'd feel nerdy to wear this... It's still great though. The only kinda confusing thing are the weird people (?) in the bottom left side. If you got rid of them ... you could make the eye red (like fire... duh) and it would be more apparent what you were relating it to.

dnangel111 on Mar 20 '07
AAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhh... okay... I get the people now. Alternative energy sources. Okay... aaaah. But you should have red for the eye...

the concept is really cool, but I don't know if the design expresses it clearly enough. Something like this shouldn't require explaination or looking at it for a really long time. also I think with something like this, the more detail and color the better

Lord of the Rings?

Perhaps different placement.

I started and finished the day before the deadline, so I didn't have time to tweak the concept into a better design, unfortunately. I wasn't satisfied with this when I finished it because of obvious problems of clarity and some of the things people mentioned above (thanks for the critques!). They are fixable.

yes, I like the idea. My only idea would be to make your "cloaked figures" more easily discernable... When I first saw it I thought they were resource icons (the ones used on maps to show what resources are coming from what areas.) Only after I read your description was it clear what they were.

i love this to an amzing degree, i think the colors are perfect. i figured out what they were pretty quickly, and totally relevent as vixyish pointed out. ya, maybe some things could be a tad bit better, but especially since i'm a big lord of the rings fan, i would totally wear this

i love the colors together. the solar thing, i personally got it and like it but i guess more people would understand the sun.

I'd definately buy it

Excellent! I like how you combined a topic of scientific concern and pop culture. I also like the LOTR reference too.

what vixyish said is awesome and very true. This is a great concept (and all the people that didn't know what the four little guys on the left were supposed to represent at least LOTR-wise, well, why are you even voting on this?), but the concept of what you are doing with the Fellowship in the corner definitely needs some embellishment. Mount Doom should have some small figures on it mining its resources and hauling things away from it, and the Fellowship needs to have right behind it some examples of its fight against the resource depletion and pollution mongers to the right of them. First, take the cloaks off of them and draw their backs in the style of some Fellowship members, and possibly make the drawing from a tiny bit further back so you can show a windmill behind them and the little bit of land they are standing on as bright and hopeful, shining down upon all the wastefulness below them. The eye of Sauron/Mobil should be red like the others suggested and a much bigger spurt of oil should be coming out of the derrick. I love this idea and think it should be re-submitted for the regular contest if it doesn't win Seed b/c i think it has a loit of promise in it. Sorry if my ideas don't fit at all with what you had in mind or are going for. 3 for now, hopefully more in the future. good luck!

Ah, excellent advice.

What I submitted is a rough draft - I usually make many revisions over a period of time (not 1 day after discovering the contest and madly rushing to finish). I will definitely change the perspective and embellish it with more detail.

Thanks!
