About my design

by zenithguitar
Science/Technology is Culture

i.e. Science/Technology defing Culture:

Why is our generation so different from, say, our grandparent's generation?

We have cell phones, instant messaging, mp3 players, laptops, digital cameras, etc. Our generation has grown up surrounded by the newest, fastest, shiniest technology, and we can hardly imagine a world without it. (For example, no internet, no such thing as threadless.com. eep)

On the other hand, our grandparents had -- gasp -- black and white TVs and "had to walk two miles to school, uphill. BOTH WAYS!"

Just kidding about the last part.

Feel free to zoom for detail.

P.S. Side placement is my personal favorite. :)

i like the hoody the best, with the zipper separating the generations.

this looks like a clutter of clipart to me, sorry.

these are some pretty nice drawn designs using 3 colors, dont just assume that its from a catalog because it looks real
exoticrobotic
exoticrobotic on Mar 19 '07
maybe a record instead of a cassette?
samtabsav
samtabsav on Mar 19 '07
good concept, poor excecution?

I kind of agree with sunshine, it just looks like... clipart. I'm not saying you're stealing, I'm just saying that's the feeling this gives off.
dancinghelicopter
dancinghelicopter on Mar 19 '07
maybe 8 track hahaha
zenithguitar
zenithguitar on Mar 19 '07
but it's not clipart and took a really long time make (especially with my over-attention to detail). :'(

@exotic, a record would be sort of redundant since I already have the gramophone vs. the ipod.

P.S. thank you stubbythumbs and everyone else for the nice comments. :)

I just don't think that the generation of the model T and generation of the cassette tape can be considered the same group of people. Not to mention there were electric lights in the time of radio. And there were no TVs in the time of the Wright brothers. Too many elements for too many timeframes.

I really like it.

Esp the hoodie, but I think it's all great.

gwendar on Mar 19 '07
I agree with Trouton - it would be better of all the items on the right were from the same generation. It's less of a "generation gap" tshirt and more of a "modern times vs. 20, 30, 60, 100, etc. years ago"

You can see a lot of nice detail with the zoom. I like the lighter color scheme.
potatoesrus
potatoesrus on Mar 19 '07
i like the color scheme and the way all of the items fit together...but it is a little weird having SO many different time periods together on the "old" side...but i do like what you're saying and i really lik the way it looks.
JAYGATZ
JAYGATZ on Mar 19 '07
I suggest a character representing each generation. One listening to an ipod, etc... that might be more cleaned up. Good concept.
zenithguitar
zenithguitar on Mar 19 '07
I was going for more a future item vs. past item thing than a future generation vs. past generation thing, so I guess it's not really a generation gap--more of a "technological item" gap, lol.

Thanks for the constructive crits!

I really like it and don't mind that the cassette is in with the other older things. I mean you have a lightbulb on the "new" side and it's really not new, but it makes sense

The light bulb and sunglasses and cassette tape are out of place. I like using black and white for the old stuff.

" mag391 on Mar 19 '07

LAWLS!

Good concept; I like the colors a lot as well.

Little more work in the items themselves.
violesca
violesca on Mar 20 '07
i don't mind the tape on the "past" side because the actual comparison of both sides show that you've given examples of each type of item (i.e cd vs. tape) so it does make a lot of sense. a little more work on the actual color schemes and i'd buy this as a hoodie for sure!

I dunno if you are being sarcastic or not, but the sleeve designs are optional (as seen in no clocks on hoody). :)

Thanks for all the nice comments! (yay first sub)

Great concept and graphics. The position/layout could be improved along with the choice of colors. I think these graphics need some metallic ink.

   Wyndzor on Mar 21 '07
Some folks may not like the style of illustration but I think the idea itself is good and I quite like the placement down the side as it's a bit different, although if it goes over the seems is it printable? For a first sub I'd give yourself a pat on the back!

zenithguitar on Mar 21 '07
there are no seams on the sides of the shirt, and threadless has also printed side-placement designs before: http://www.threadless.com/product/715/Byebi.

I like the concept, but I wish the generational divide was a little more concrete (i.e. the technology of 1907 vs 2007). The "old" gadgets are being pulled from too many generations. Grouping a cassette tape with a Model T makes me feel ancient! Ha.

b_nj_m_n
b_nj_m_n on Mar 23 '07
I think it is a great idea but you need to lose the tape cassette to stay on concept with the turn of the century items.
Lhiiiz
Lhiiiz on Mar 23 '07
I get that you were going for antiquated vs. modern, not generation vs. generation, but I understand that a lot of people don't understand the idea you were trying to present. That's why you'll probably have to rework this. I actually like it alot, but only on the hoodie. Don't take those clip art comments too hard man.
zenithguitar
zenithguitar on Mar 23 '07
thanks for the ideas guys. if this scores well enough, I'll fix it so it has your suggestions.

now that I look at it, the cassette does seem fairly out of place, lol.

A tad too cluttered, too much going on. I like the concept, I just think it needs a little more work to be a better design. Good color choices though!
