What does the kanji say?

Nice use of the black negative space, minimal & simple, classic feeling.

just a simple bye bye. i know, pretty stupid, it wasn't really bout the message for me, was just looking for nice looking kanjis - but hey, i think it works :p

i actually have another version - i think a better one that i just did today. i'll post it up for critique but i'm not sure if i can use it for a sub again. "duplicate submission" :(

Lovely.

Lovely, simple design. I think it could stand well enough on it's own without the kanji script.

I'd like the critique one much better than this one if it weren't centered.. off to the side at the bottom with the dots kind of floating up the other side would be gorgeous!

I agree with Mandyhello.

Brilliant, love the use of the black space, reminds me of something I learnt in Psych about the principle of closure. I must've been paying attention in class after all! I'd buy it!

Nice, but better without the katakana. :)

I kinda like that it says "bye bye" though. those who know what it means will immediately be more amused by the coquettish pose

No pretentious katakana please.

Why does everything that has some type of Japanese/Chinese character in it suddenly become "pretentious"? Granted, it is vastly, VASTLY overused, but hardly anyone who gripes about it can actually read it, yet it has become some new whipping boy for everyone. And Stardance, please don't think I'm picking on you because I'm not, you were just the last one I happened to read after a long thread in many, many different subs.

I mean how many people knew the difference between "Kanji" and "Katakana" before YagiKau enlightened us? I know I didn't. Yes, we've all been saying things on ourselves for years but let's at least admit our ignorance if we happen to be so! Anyway, I'm going to put my soap box away. I've had a bad, bad weekend and am letting it get to me.

As far as the design is concerned, it's charming. The use of negative space is really effective and the colors you've chosen have a nice harmony.

Keep the katakana. I know that some people will just see the katakana and immediately write the shirt off, JUST because they've seen that element used so often--but you know, with this shirt, it's perfect. It's not just randomly pasted into the design, but it serves a purpose.

Anyway, this is somewhat random, but I'd move the katakana down a tiny bit--or at least to the left, leaving some room between the last character and the sash. To my eyes, that character sort of "blends in" with the sash. But you know, the design looks superb anyway, so there's no pressing need to do so.

$5 and a buy.

thanks for the comments everyone. i appreciate it! :)

as for the katakana (tnx yagi :p) being "pretentious", hmm.. you'll have to explain that one to me, i would love to know your view on design. :)

A hiragana salutation in Japanese, as opposed to the katakana Japonization of an English phrase would be much more appropriate for this design. Katakana is an alphabet used almost exclusively for foreign loan words, while hiragana was an alphabet originally invented by women for written communication in Japanese when they were not allowed to be taught the Chinese characters that Japanese was exclusively written in at the time.

I like the design, but you need to be able to see the geisha better.

I totally agree with Piradical's comments on the katakana as well.

Change the colours and I would vote higher!

I love this design, and would love it just that teeny bit more without the kanji. I think the geisha is very well drawn and deserves a shirt to herself.

I am assuming this design didn't win - cos if it did I want this shirt - it's gorgeous ... and ashame it didn't win. You should resubmit - it's so beautful!
