I love the characters, though it does look an awful lot like the work of several other successful illustrators out there today, but I feel like it needs more...more of a background element to really work as a shirt.

hmmm, I looked up Gary Baseman, scarygoround and Tim Biskup and couldn't find anything that looked remotely like crono's style. You guys need to go check out his deviantart page to see that he has been drawing like this for a long time. Get over yourselves.
