really fantastic drawing. the only thing that kind of bothered me was how the sky/background just ends in a line... maybe make it gradually fade off?

My dear critics, fellow designers and tee shirt coinsures, I would like to formally apologize. It was never my intention to deceive anyone. I never claimed that this was my own drawing and they are copyright free images. I have loved wood block illustrations for some time and have used them in several layouts. Coming for the design school that I did it was widely taught that as long as it was copyright free image it was safe to use in you own design.
So I hereby proclaim that I will never use clipart again for a shirt design. All my images and designs will be 100% original. I promise. Please don't think of me as a dishonest person. I submitted this design with the purist of intentions. Thank you all for you comments. |

clip art isn't necessarily stealing, it's purpose is to be copied & reused. the difference is whether you buy the rights to it or not.
(Pepin Press has some really neat graphics, but even after you buy their books &CDs, you STILL have to write to them for permission to actually reprint the images, with additional fees! THAT sucks.) sometimes combining clipart makes for some pretty creative stuff. the downside is, whatever you make w/it could be recreated by other people. I sure hope none of you who are criticizing have ever Live Traced or Photoshop filtered a photo you snagged off the internet. now that's stealing, but people do it all the time here. |

It's all very well being honest when youve been well and truly rumbled. I think you should have been honest when people started saying what an amazing illustration job it was. Having said that, anyone who looked at your first designs would have been able to tell that you didnt draw this.
Lots of people on here seem to be O.K with the use of clipart, so maybe if youre honest about it from the start you'll do well. |

However! If it truely is copyright free art....I don't see why it can't win. It's only unethical to not say that it is. The highest scoring shirt ever in threadless history used copyright free "clipart". It's the one with the guy fishing on a fish that's an island...can't think of the name right now. Just make sure you note it in the future if you use it. |

he didn't steal the design. He didn't STEAL anything. It's copyright free images he used to create a design, that's what designers do most of the time. The problem with it, is that this is really more of an illustration competition. It is not his illustration... there is a fine line here, but he still did a great job with found images. Should it be printed? Well maybe, maybe not, but quite calling him a thief and saying this design is stolen because it isn't.

alanis on Mar 19 '07 i agree w/ welshalex. i think you should have commented earlier on when people were praising your "amazing illustration style, your textures, cross-hatching effects" etc, that this design was just composed out of clip arts. Or better yet, you should've written in the comment box when you're submitting the design a short description.
