About my design
by pyr4lis
This idea was originally for the Joy of Text blog competition but as I missed the deadline (by alot) due to personal time constraints, but I decided to proceed and finish it anyways. Yay! hehe

The idea originally came to me after getting the song stuck in my head. Anyways, I've always liked the song and find that as dorky as it is I feel that humming this really does make me feel happier when I'm in a foul mood. :D

All the lettering is done by hand and is not an existing font. I lined the "writing" up to create the outline of hands. Hopefully the idea comes off as I intended. The print is sized 14x14 which is the maxium size for designs in the regular competition.

There are two possible placements "Upper" or "Lower". Personally I like the Upper placement but I do also realize that in that placement the hands might sort of look like they're "groping" the wearer lol... but I like it anyway!

Comments and crit are always welcome. If you do not like it for some reason kindly say why and what changes you would like rather than just voting "0" without any way for me to improve.

Thanks alot! I hope everyone likes it and votes me a $5 ;)

Yeah I'll post a link to a bigger version tomorrow since it's late. The words around the hands is the lyrics to "if you're happy and you know it clap your hands".

I played around with a few different positions in the critiques but didn't get any suggestions on how to solve it. Lol I had like 8 comments of which 1/2 were my own bumping trying to get someone to help out.

I see where you're coming from and usually I'm one of the first to proclaim somethings "grabbyness" or if the placement is too much "chest attention" but it didn't bother me as much with this.. lol probably because it's mine but I think mostly because there is not solid shapes just the words.

Anyway.. big link tomorrow. And suggestions are welcome :)

I like the lower placement... on the upper placement the hands are right on her boobs. Other than that, I like this.

if you're happy and you know it grab my boobs
if you're happy and you know it grab my boobs
if you're happy and you know it
and you really want to show it
if you're happy and you know it grab my boobs

lol
sorry

the hands need to be not flat but from the side or 3/4 profile or something

I kind of want a shirt that looks like it is grabbing me. I'm probably just crazy, though
pyr4lis
pyr4lis on Feb 22 '07
Rudra you're probably right... again though.... I did tried to get some suggestions & help in the critique section and ended up with really nothing useful placement wise.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to improve the placement?? I could do them in 3/4 but since they're outline is the wording I'd be afraid no one would be able to tell what it was. There is no actual solid outline around the hands.

I was going to link to a larger version so you can see the design but imageshack isn't working right now so I have no way of uploading or hosting the files right now. I'll get it linked as soon as I can.

*sigh* well all this information would have been more useful in the Critique forum :(
Alebot
Alebot on Feb 22 '07
Not everyone reads that, sorry. I do read it, and don't remember seeing this. I agree the hands need to be turned so they look more like thet are getting ready to clap. if you do that, the hands won't look so grabby, and I think placement might be easier.

lauracake on Feb 22 '07
i think it's cute as is... i agree by making them 3/4 view with just the text it would be hard to tell they are hands. and i think it's funny to have an innocent playful design that happens to be hands on boobs. it's kinda sexy... just my opinion.

swesome. maybe on black would be better 5$
pyr4lis
pyr4lis on Feb 22 '07
Yeah I know very few people dig through the critique forum. Personally I liked it better when they were just in the blogs. At least I felt I got more help there :P

Anyways I can always rework the idea with a 3/4 hand view and maybe using actual illustrated hand outlines and doing something else with the wording.

Good score or bad, either way it's a learning experience! And I am appreciative of everyone who took the time to comment and help me get better.

AliceChew on Feb 22 '07
maybe the hands could be turned sideways or something? The upper placement does look like a bit of an invitation! Maybe guys could get away with it. I do quite like the belly grab though :D

On another note, the colours are great and the idea is cute as.
AliceChew
AliceChew on Feb 22 '07
Or maybe the hands don't have to be so life size. I know that would make the text harder to read if it was smaller, but realistically people are going to ask the t-shirt wearer what it says anyway if they're curious enough.

Yeah, def. lower placement. That's the problem with hand designs. It's hard to keep it from looking like someone's being groped.

The hands could have been in a more original position maybe even like a hand print or something, also they wouldn't be that way round if the person was clapping one would be palm up.

i clap my hands and say "yeah man!" for this design...i'd love it at the boobie level for men and women cause i think that is an extra cute twist on the innocence of the tee. But either placement i would still buy....great concept done quite well, although instead of clapping the hands seem kind of playing pattycake with your naughty bits. 4$
cruttan
cruttan on Feb 25 '07
I like the upper placement. I can see where it might (or does) look a little gropey, but it looks good and I can totally see what FRICKINAWESOME is saying - it's a new twist on the concept when placed on the boobie region. But maybe I'm just shameless like that.

   mezo on Feb 27 '07
What bothers me is the hand placement....when you clap your thumbs face the same direction. Here they face opposite, which makes it look like the invisible man just groped the front of the wearer. I like the handdrawn feel, but think it could have been cleaned up so it's not SOOO handdrawn, does that make sense? Great colors!
AugustInNewYork
AugustInNewYork on Feb 27 '07
What if the hands had been "worded" upside down? But I guess then they'd be headed South instead of North...Oi. I still like it. :D
pyr4lis
pyr4lis on Feb 27 '07
lol thank you all for the comments. Yeah I sorta know what you mean Mezo. Having seen all the comments I may revise it for a version 2 with actual illustrated clapping hands with just the lyrics overlayed across it. Obviously keeping the same colors as I love them. Right now its just the lyrics creating the outline of the hands.

I had tried many other ways of altering the hands in the critique section (some versions didnt even make it there) but the flat placement was the only way to actually tell that the blobs were hands and not jumbled blobs hehe.

In the end though I sorta liked the naughtyness of the groping hands with the innocent childhood song. But I'm very open to altering it so it's more wearer friendly :)

scottyup on Feb 28 '07
bold. which is good.
about the "groping" .. if ppl around u think you are wearing a tee shirt that is riske, then they'll porb look closer .. and notice the words! the "clap"s and notes and fun colors ( definately love vibrants on brown) trigger happiness. that totally outways any suspicion of awkward hand position.
