Clubs? Machetes? Huh?

those don't look like bones or branches or anything really. confusing.

I didn't want them to look exactly like bones... wanted to do a more graphic take on the classic skull and crossbones so I mimicked the form more, rather than doing a literal translation.

I thought it was X's, like marks for counting. Kinda like when old fighter pilots would mark how many planes they shot down on the side of their plane. On that note, I'd like it better if you had a series of them in rows.... maybe the last one could be missing the X, as if the hunter was still stalking the last buck.

Crazy! I actually started this design as a "kill-board" like you described, but I thought it was a little too much... that's exactly where the X/crossbones originated from! If I get the time I'll revisit the kill-board idea. :)

I thought they were bloody clubs that were used to take the deer down! Now that's huntin' !

Reminds me of the "Real men hunt deer with swords" design. The clubs are hard to make out though.

I designed it and read it as a buck 'n crossbones, hence the title, although it is intentionally abstract in places and can be read as an X, clubs, or whatever you see. It's meant to be a strong graphic with a menacing feeling to it. So elements like the red on left reads like blood, but isn't completely literal and all gorey like real dripping oozing splattered blood. Maybe it helps to compare it to the Punisher logo if that makes any sense.

The abstractions work well for me... it's a great cross between the skull and crossbones idea and the deer/nature craze. I think the overall design is a winner! (...found you on craiglist)
