The title should be "Can't see the forest for the socks" - no "but." I agree on taking out the sun; the rest is awesome, amazing use of negative space, and I think the title (minus "but") is really fitting for the design. I'm guessing that those who don't like the title just don't understand it, cause it's really good.

Everyone's going gaga over this shirt, so I really hate to be a stick in the mud and criticize it, but it's only fair to you for me to voice my dissenting opinion.
First off, I'd be blown away if I saw this in a gallery on canvas, or even as a nice print framed on my wall. However, as a shirt, I really don't care for it for the following reasons: The composition is dull; your palette is too washed out to work on a brown shirt; the whole peering-out-from-a-forest has been done so many times, it's getting annoying; the duality is interesting, but I can't think of an interesting message that comes out of it; the whole picture beyond the trees seems warped. Alas you have the stamp of approval from so many Threadless alumni, what does a voice like mine matter? Are people previewing how this looks on the shirt? You might win... and probably lots of people will buy. But there's room for disagreement, so here it is. |

grayehound on Feb 09 '07 J-Ray, I agree with a lot of what you say, but yours isn't the only dissenting opinion. I'm probably the worst abuser of the forest silhouette thing, but it still is an effective tool that fits my style well. personally, I'm sick of seeing it too, but it was the best way to resolve the idea I had in mind. I disagree with the colors being too dull. I chose what I did because they felt right with what I had in mind for the design, so that's about as subjective as you get. as for there not being an interesting message, this is just a tee design, man, not a soapbox. can't people just want to wear something pretty that tricks the eye a little? and, yea, the background is warped, very inentionally. the deer aren't weiner deer, they're the same pattern on two different socks, the sun and eagle and butterflies are tattoos, and yet they aren't....I wanted to play off that duality as much as possible

I sear when i hit on this sub, my computer winked slyly at me. Out of the 9,000 or so subs I have voted on since my tenure as Threadless Submission Scorer #3783905, THIS IS FAR AND AWAY ONE OF THE MOST IMPRESSIVE DESIGNS I HAVE EVER SEEN ON THREADLESS. It's one of those designs that you know within a milisecond of gazing at its brilliance, you know you will be spending 15 bucks (or in my 2xl fat-ass case 17) on it in a few weeks time. FRICKINAWESOME on Feb 13 '07 o...and in response to my collegue j-ray's criticisms of the shirt, I thought the design was super incredible until i saw how it would look on a shirt, and then my opinion went to balisstic overload. I strongly disagree with j-ray in that i think the design benefits even more from its negative space layout on a tee and the horizontal positioning...basically, putting this on a shirt makes a great design even better. I'll stop typing words on this blog now.

igo2cairo on Sep 23 '07 I just bought this around a week ago - it was weird, I was at work just browsing through the tees, not expecting anything, then suddenly out of the blue one of these gems just pops up in men's med.!? Just one. At first I thought it was an optical illusion ;) It wasn't announced as a reprint or anything so I'm assuming they just found a spare one somewhere or maybe it was a return (but who would be crazy enough to do that?) Anyway, I've always loved this design and requested a reprint long ago, so this was a such a nice easter egg. My hands were trembling and I could barely type my credit card # in fast enough, because I knew it would be gone if I waited another second. So, this baby is on it's way, and I just can't wait to post a cool photo on my profile of me wearing it!
