About my design

by grypesagon
A black hole in the chest. I'm not sure whether or not it would work better on the chest large or smaller over the heart.

I personally think the heart would be a bit too emo. Some people dig that though. Let me know what you think.

Oh the inspiration came from a line of Optimus Rhyme's song Compiler.

"It surges on the verge of destruction and just grows. F*ck being a star. I want to be a black hole."
Kimmyrox
Kimmyrox on Feb 09 '07
I actually like a back of the shirt placement for it, but definitely not over the heart.
Gladius
Gladius on Feb 09 '07
I think the center of the chest is better.
grypesagon
grypesagon on Feb 09 '07
yeah. i knew the heart idea would be too emo. :-)
morvie07
morvie07 on Feb 09 '07
Yeah the back would be the best coz you would be able to see it better. Chest placement can be a bit awkward on girls!
grypesagon
grypesagon on Feb 09 '07
ohhh good point. i don't see why back would be bad. in fact i kinda dig it.

right side of chest?
grypesagon
grypesagon on Feb 09 '07
that might work too. :-)
speedymarie
speedymarie on Feb 09 '07
I would avoid any upper side placement - just too awkward on girls.

i love the concept, 'cause I'm a space geek, but I'm not getting enough depth of dimension to indicate that this hole is going into nothingness. And, you've got stars in your black hole - those stars would be shrunken to a single point and would be indistinguishable from one another.

Right now, this is a 2, but work on it, please, because I love the idea.
grypesagon
grypesagon on Feb 09 '07
... well i pretty much cloned it from an actual photo of a black hole so.... the stars were visible on the other side of the hole.

but i'm glad you like the idea.
chelly
chelly on Feb 09 '07
"cloned" does not bode well for my scoring proceedure
grypesagon
grypesagon on Feb 09 '07
yeah... cause spending 14 hours trying to get a photo of a black hole simplified to a 4 color layout using half tones and shapes instead of gradients was so easy.

An actual photo of a black hole? Are you aware that their existence has not been substantiated?

from http://cosmology.berkeley.edu/Education/BHfaq.html#q4:

Is there any evidence that black holes exist?

Yes. You can't see a black hole directly, of course, since light can't get past the horizon. That means that we have to rely on indirect evidence that black holes exist.
grypesagon
grypesagon on Feb 09 '07
Exactly. The same way that even though you can't interact with a black hole to measure it, even if you found one, you could estimate the intensity but measuring the effect it is having on the surrounding area.

I guess it may not have been an actual photo of a black hole but it was a photo labeled black hole. :-D

Put it on the tummy. I'm hungry. Hahahaha. Placement is the problem here. It would also be cool to see some planets going in there or something. 3.

i don't really care how many hours you spent turning someone elses photo into 4 colors. you could have used that time actually illustrating a black hole and then adding some more elements so that it became a design for a shirt. as it is, there's really nothing going on. srry.

LeRoi on Feb 10 '07
HEART ALL THE WAY.
grypesagon
grypesagon on Feb 10 '07
Chelly, do you know how many artists use reference materials? How many digital illustrators compile a collage of photographed images as the root thier work? How many traditional (canvas and brushes) painters use overhead projectors to cast an image onto the canvas for them to use as a base?

How one gets from one end of the spectrum to the other is not for anyone to judge. We all have our techniques. Some of what I do is by hand using a pencil and paper with no reference. This was by hand using a tablet and a photograph.

What makes one technique greater than the other?

Black holes suck.

This shirt, however does not.
grypesagon
grypesagon on Feb 10 '07
lol thanks :-)
SuperPope
SuperPope on Feb 10 '07
It's a vectorization of a photo of some planetary nebula. Nothing more. I understand what you're saying about the legitimacy of using reference materials, but for something to be a reference material you'd have to use it for reference, which is not what you've done here. You simply took somebody else's photograph and reduced it into a format that could be printed on a shirt. You didn't bring any of your own creativity to the table.
grypesagon
grypesagon on Feb 10 '07
I suppose I can't argue with a lack of actual creativity. To be honest though... I'm not very creative at all. I simply possess a technical aptitude for some things.
Coopaline
Coopaline on Feb 10 '07
You spent your time making a T-shirt for me to wear. If this was purely an art contest i might be hating but it's not, it's a business. The only relevant question is: Would i wear this? I wouldn't but that's not the point haha. I like the design creativity aside.

As for creativity in general, nothing is purely original. Can a blind man imagine colours? We can only reproduce what we have seen and combinations of what we have seen. If you guys want to talk creativity i would refer you to the Dadaism period of art. Max ernst. Your views on art are very narrow.

Or Marcel duchamp or Claes Oldenburg for that matter.
chelly
chelly on Feb 10 '07
well kudos to you for putting the time in to create it and then to argue w/ anyone who doesn't agree, but it just looks crappy on a shirt
grypesagon
grypesagon on Feb 10 '07
Coop, Thanks for understanding my point.

I could've tried to hand illustrate and build a blackhole from scratch. I decided that the quality wouldn't be acceptable if I did. So I went with something more reliable to make sure the idea itself was given it's fair consideration. I'm glad someone understands my reasons.

Chelly, I stick to my guns because I don't beleive I've done anything wrong. If you thought it looked crappy on a shirt then that should've been your only comment.

You started by saying that my use of the word "cloned" didn't help your scoring. That's a dumb reason. If you don't like the idea, you don't have to. But I don't see any submissions on your account. So don't expect me to take your critique on my technique to weigh heavily with me.
grypesagon
grypesagon on Feb 10 '07
Oh and Pope, i was only using reference material as a point of relation. Their are brush and canvas artists out there who, when commissioned to do a portrait of someone they will take or be supplied with a photo and use and over head projector to case the image onto thier canvas and duplicate the image.

They bring no creativity to the table because the image is what it is.

I didn't feel a black hole needed anything more than itself. It just needed to be done i a why so it blended well together. That's where I put my focus. My previous two submissions were both hand illustrated using different techniques. I simply didn't choose that path for this idea.

(I'm explaining because, unlike Chelly, you do have submissions so I fel like you deserved an actual explainationatory response.)
timbw
timbw on Feb 11 '07
Well, regardless of all that, I think it looks awesome. And best placement is over the chest - in my opinion.
chelly
chelly on Feb 11 '07
so, you are designing only for designers? good luck with that, since most of the business and voters for threadless are not designers but consumers. this submission looks like crap on a shirt, and i'm sorry for that. but i did not insult you as an artist or a person and would look at each submission on its own merit. there was no reason for you to go out of your way to insult me.
grypesagon
grypesagon on Feb 11 '07
That's not what I said.

"So don't expect me to take your critique on my technique to weigh heavily with me."

Meaning, how I chose to go about creating it.

that's actually a good thought. I may follow that path when this fails and I start refining it for resubmission.

heart or back
hiiambrett
hiiambrett on Feb 11 '07
I would say placement would be chest instead over heart only, then it could imply you have not heart and it is a black hole but. I LOVE THIS!
FamoPuP
FamoPuP on Feb 12 '07
I kinda like this design. Not as much as Kashira, but it's still good, nonetheless. I, personally, would say to go for heart placement, but that's just me. $4
