A satirical approach to pop culture and current events...

Wanna know what's worse than a satirical t-shirt? A terribly illustrated and poorly envisioned satire of one of the most over-satirized symbols available today.

Actually, I can think of what would make this shirt worse. A Che Guevera skull with paint splatters and swirlies holding a gun while birds fly above him kissing a girl who is bleeding from the hole where her heart used to be. All placed in the lower left corner of the shirt.

I think it's a 'Do Not Enter' symbol.

As in 'Do Not Enter' shit like this ever again.
skafiend007
skafiend007 on Jan 29 '07
Man, take it easy on the guy...

it's not a bad idea. In fact i could see Banksy taking on something in this vein. But I dunno... there's something about this that is not connecting. It doesn't all seem to mesh. But Dellex is right... lost the "Do Not...." sign. I think most right-thinking people know that blowing yourself up with the intent of taking out other people as well is wrong. And the ones that plan on doing it won't look at this shirts and say, "What? I can't do this? Oh, Ok then..."

Meh... when people are still losing the people they love every day from sucide bombers all over the world, its not so funny. Im sure you didnt mean to offend. But think of the familys and lives torn apart. You wouldnt take too kind to a guy in Iraq wearing a satirical take on 9/11 im sure. Im sure you didnt mean to offend.

theres suicide bombing now, there was suicide bombing in ww2, there will be suicide bombing in 50 years. Stop being so sensitive about shit you aren't even a part of.

It's amazing, people will allow someone down the road to starve to death but they'll get politically correct about this bs.

Btw that doesn't mean I like your design.
The Ending
The Ending on Jan 30 '07
Oh thats fine then bananaphone, since its been going on for a long time its fine to laugh about. Since its not MY family or friends directly being affected I cant ask for a little compassion to be shown by the rest of the world. Most people dont ALLOW someone to starve to death. On that same note it would not be funny to do a satirical design on famine even though it has been happening since life has been around and it has not directly affected me.

Wow that's really dark. I like dark and creepy but this gives me some pause. It's a bit insensitive don't you think? It makes for an interesting commentary but I don't know if it would be appropriate for a t-shirt.

arbormeister on Jan 30 '07
Lets not celebrate this shit or glamorize it. Smart par0dies are great, but suicide is chickenshit. Taking others down with you is insane. Even Ronald Mc. D as a suicide bomber would piss me off. I've seen the "i-pope", and "i-jesus" shirts in Europe, and those are funny. You're smart enough to get your designs on this site, but the suicide shirts have got to stop. Have some respect.

Foreordination
Foreordination on Jan 30 '07
If you can't laugh at something, then all that's left is a defensive attitude and intense anger or hatred. The reason that there's so much bullshit going on between nations and in the middle east is because people take their beliefs so seriously.

You can respect someone and still laugh at them. Friends may often make light-hearted remarks to jab fun at each other, and hell, it doesn't half make life a lot easier and more enjoyable.

if you cant laugh at something, there's PLENTY left besides a defensive attitude and intense anger or hatred. so dont try to make it sound like there's something wrong with people who don't think this is funny.
political/cultural issues aside, the whole "i-ripoff" thing has been done, LITERALLY now, to death.
enough, already.
Foreordination
Foreordination on Jan 30 '07
I don't think this is funny, I think this is pointless, and about as sharp as a hammer. My point was more about not taking things too seriously. You can laugh this off as poorly conceived shit, rather than HOLY MOLY THIS IS AN OUTRAGE THESE GUYS R GOONA DETONATE!!!!

You know people tried to sue the film company behind Lord of the Rings for calling the second film "The Two Towers" because it mocked the 9/11 incident? That, to me, is not cool. It provided me with some amusement though.

Poor Richard
Poor Richard on Jan 30 '07
$5 ~ ~ I like it. It gets people talking, obviously.

The way I interpret it, is not that terrorism is funny, but that both iPods and terrorism are prevalent. Clearly, the international anti symbol indicates that blowing yourself up is not good.

Unfortunately, children in the Middle East are indoctrinated to see these suicide bombers as heroes, just as we see our sports figures.

I think the way people are treading eggshells around terrorism is dispicable. There are groups that take ideology to an extreme and they are the ones you should aim your negative comments toward.

AdamBraley
AdamBraley on Feb 01 '07
I have to agree that the satire is lost since iPods really aren't connected to suicide bombing. This is a shirt that's almost sure to be disallowed from public schools and won't win the wearer many friends from people who have lost family members to terrorist attacks. ...Or if they have a soul. I'm really sick of tasteless satire.

kate.rad on Feb 02 '07
Wow. I'm kind of disappointed at how many people are like "Ah! Terrorism! Must kill design!" Its not like hes glorifying suicide bombings. Obviously not, who the hell would do that. The design just shows how ridiculous current times has become that one hears news of terrorist attacks and suicide bombings like nearly as many times as they see commercials for something as popularly known and universally recognized as an iPod ad.
I'm not saying the design in itself is perfect, but some of you commentors are just looking at the subject and immediately disregarding the design in its entirety, including a relevant (albeit tragic) message.
That said: I'm also not a fan of the Do Not Enter type sign in the background, and I don't thnk you need the text. I really like the poses (especially the guy, his sillouette reminds me of the ensemble director at my school) but I think the girl seems a little bit too much bigger than the guy, even if you're looking at it with the viewpoint that she'd be bigger since she seems closer. Also, I think you need a little bit more emphasis/detail on the detonator, maybe even a red button or something to draw focus.
I (yell at me all you want) think you have a good message, and with a little bit of cleanup you can work it into a really great design. Whether short-sighted people will still find it offensive or not, you'll never know, and thats their problem, not yours. Great idea with great potential.

knuklehedz
knuklehedz on Feb 03 '07
what a very clever design, if only that it gets people to "talk". In as much as it's only a drawing, for a Tshirt, I agree with kate.rad. One should know, however, that posting such a thing here will yield much more than design critique; to which I am certainly not opposed.
Indeed, lose the "do not" symbol and print this shirt! 100 years from now, when we're all fully medicated and living the placid american dream, we might crack a smile.

Wow....a played out ipod reference and allusions to suicide bombers. Fuck bananphone and the opinion that just cause there have been suicide bombers in the world for many years we can't be upset for something that looks like it is glorifying this kind of violence which has been more and more in the spotlight and more rampant in recent years than at any other time in history. Ipod references suck ass, and the added retardation of something that resembles suicide bombings will not play out well when wearing this shirt around town. I know there is supposed to be deeper meaning to it (well, supposedly), but that meaning will be lossed on 95 percent of the folks that look at your shirt. And i usually say fuck those people if they don't get what the shirt is going for, but the shirt is pretty lame even if they DO understand the meaning behind it. sorry. 1.

Wow! Is this not the most debated design in Threadless's history? Maybe not, but still... I've never seen so many political, moral, and social opinions thrown out by almost every poster. Sheesh. I think it is a good satire in the comparison between the frequency of "suicide bombing in the media" and "iPod/technology/consumerism in the media."
But I also understand how some people can be offended by it in that the imagery seems to make it look "hip" to be a suicide bomber. While it is obvious that this is purposely done in a sarcastic manner makes me realize the artist in no way was intending to glorify this act of terrorism.
However, doing a design about something so risky means you gotta take all the heat when it comes around, so you can't really complain about it. There are plenty of artists that do work with meaning behind it, but most people don't get that meaning because the original image on the surface offends them. Look at Andres Serrano and his "Piss Christ." A photograph that offends so many they don't even care to find out what the meaning behind it is.
ajsolid84
ajsolid84 on Feb 23 '07
I'm not really saying I like the design, I'm just saying that I recognize that this design was not done through "bad taste" as people are saying, it was done with a more meaningful message in mind, but there are consequences of treading on thin ice.
Also I think people are sick of seeing designs playing with the iPod imagery that they immediately say "NO" and move on. Sorry about all the heat, brandonjw.
