I found this phrase amusing, and i think you should know it too. There are 2 posible designs. One with the background, and one without. Submitting it for the JOT 2.

OK, I love the idea of this on a shirt somehow, and agree with matthijs that the text itself is great, but it just doesn't connect to anything (including the image). sorry.

Thanks for the comments ppl. The image i put here is only to accent my personal opinion on what fate is, and what deux ex machine means to me. I wont expect everyone to have the same notion as mine; feel free to draw your own conclusion. This is also one of the reason why i put 2 possible design options.

I absolutely loves this, but mainly for the text...I don't really get the connection between the text/its meaning and the image. and deus ex machina is a literary device, people...ever read shakespeare? it's an intentional cop-out by the writer to get out of a shitheel of a situation. the more bizarre that cop-out is, the more hilarious.

Agreed. Also, the expressions is generally a device originating from Greek Theatre where an actor explains what is going on, near the end of a play. Generally looked down upon in modern literature/cinema.

If the phrase had ANYTHING to do with the design, i would score this higher...like if a hunter was hiding behind the trees on the left, and the border from the phrase was a bit more jagged, and presented as being just above the hunter's head as he is about to fire, the phrase saves the animal's life. Now THAT'S good god machine. As it is, a 1.

Deus ex machina is a Latin phrase that is used to describe an unexpected, artificial, or improbable character, device, or event introduced suddenly in a work of fiction or drama to resolve a situation or untangle a plot (e.g., having the protagonist wake up and realize it was all a dream, or an angel suddenly appearing to solve problems). The phrase has been extended to refer to any resolution to a story which does not pay due regard to the story's internal logic and is so unlikely that it challenges suspension of disbelief, allowing the author to conclude the story with an unlikely, though more palatable, ending. In modern terms the deus ex machina has also come to describe a being, object or event that suddenly appears and solves a seemingly insoluble difficulty (e. g. the cavalry arriving).

hm. maybe it's just me, but i thought deus ex machina was a device used by the ancient greeks in theatre to fly people around the stage to seem like gods...
other than that I really like it.

Wow my mind boogles at the wiki definition - though wikipedia is destroying the informational integrity of the internet (not that it had much to begin with). i am thinking that now when I need to sound real smart and deep and wax philosophic then I can pull this phrase out! I am not particularly found of the 70's-esque font thing that is happening

The combination of the type, nature sillhouettes & repeating geometric patterns is waaaay too Scott Hansen/ISO50 for my liking & I'm not sure theres enough interest in the design with type alone.
