Awesome design. different, darker color maybe? like black or a dark red?

its a good idea but if I could I would change it a bit like the position of the people and the perspective.

This dramatic juxtaposition of opposites, my sadness of the 10 milliseconds fate of the little girl, the mysterious hopefulness in their aspirational gaze up at the fatal cloud, the non-committal soft colours, the length of the shadows that are laden with nostalgia. I am, all at once, amused, saddened and charmed by this piece. The artist is genius.

I wanted to keep it down to three colours but thought it worked best stretching it to four.

Bugger. Was just working on a mushroom cloud inspired design. Nice work. Would prefer a different colour though, maybe blue.

this would be a good shirt for an emo kid if it was on black. at first i thought the mushroom cloud was a poorly drawn tree :P. perspective might be the issue.

Somewhat strange, makes you think. I don't quite get the Mushroom, it kinda looks like a poorly drawn tree. Sorry dall.

i love me some nevil shute, "on the beach" will make you think. this shirt carries the same weight, beautiful

it's kinda little bit dramatic but overall i'd like to have that one

I'm with 'stylemo' on this one. It's decent.

I'd like it better if the daughter were grabbing onto the mother with one arm, the mother holding the child close, and a 'teddy' dangles (in a wind maybe?) from the kid's other hand.

As it is, it's kinda scary... Like why is there very little reaction from either the child of the mother?

I'd think the kid would be scared shitless, or grabbing for the mother, and I'd hope the mother would be moving to shield/comfort the child.

Unnerving.

Oh and the prospect of annihilation is quite scary too.

Thanks for your comments guys - I toyed with this design for some time, it started off with a mother walking a child into the horizon facing the child's ultimate fear, a huge broccoli (Drawn like a deadly off-green nuclear bomb/explosion). Eventually I preferred a more sinister theme and it developed into what you see here. I thought I'd give it a try as mainly less darker themes win on threadless, so thought it would be worth a try doing something different than my usual silly stuff! Maybe my first submission would stand a better chance like that, who knows...

I think with the characters being expressionless and motionless, it conveys a more sinister feel - also there's not really much time to react anyway when faced with a nuclear explosion I guess...

Thanks again for your comments people.

i think it could be done better. it looks like a paint drawing.
Lysla

yeah, ben i like your line of thought on this one. i wouldnt change anything about the figures - of course you cant make them just shadows as they havent been hit by the explosion yet, and yes, while it is pretty depressing that they're just standing there, i like it that way. so call me morbid. whatev.

Very cleverly says so much in just a few strokes - excellent

My first reaction was this is missing something - colour or maybe detail. However once the meaning starts to come out it becomes clear that any unnecassary elements would only detract from what seems to be the frightening reality of the design - "the end". Nice work.

sugarkitten on Jan 23 '07
I would think that if I happened upon a mushroom cloud with my daughters that I would have the same reaction - stunned silence. I can realte to this sooo much as I want to protect my children from the evils of this world so much but they seem so much bigger than I.
ceraseven
ceraseven on Jan 23 '07
There's something wonky with their shadows, almost like the light is more from the right side of the image, not the explosion. Intentional?
benbrignell
benbrignell on Jan 23 '07
It's a fairly small design - the slight curve in the shadows is to add to the curvature of the earth, the horizon is slightly curved too.. as if a slight incline to a hill leading to the horizon... if that makes sense.

the shadow really should resemble the mushroom cloud a bit more, otherwise from afar it looks like a huge arrowhead or something.

I definetly like the concept, powerful! But the two things that could use some work is the mushroom cloud and the shadow. Maybe if you thined out the bottom of the cloud and bruoght the ring up. For now a 3
