About my design
by ryeofcali
In Big Woods, there grew a giant old oak tree. Within its gnarled trunk was a cozy little cottage where a family of owls lived. There was a Ma and Pa, and they had a baby owlet whom they called Junior. Every morning, Pa would get up and go to work in the cuckoo clock workshop in the edges of Big Woods, and Ma would stay home and care for Junior. And this is how it was for a long time. Then one day, everybody stopped buying cuckoo clocks. They thought they were too old fashioned. And so the cuckoo clock workshop had to shutter its doors forever. Pa tried and tried to find other jobs, but he only knew one line of work his whole life. If only he had his own cuckoo clock workshop, he would control its destiny. But money was running low, and winter was fast approaching. The owl family needed money to survive, and needed more money to open Pa's workshop. Then one autumn day, Ma decided that enough was enough, she would have to leave the comforts of home, and find a job. After about a week of searching, Ma was hired to wait tables in the dark and dangerous depths of Big Woods. Ma was very old fashioned, and was not used to the skimpy uniforms that she was required to wear. But she put her pride aside and worked almost every evening coming home to the oak tree late at night while Pa would care for Junior. And this is how it was for a long time. Then one day, Ma had saved enough money for the owl family to open their very own cuckoo clock workshop! And that they did, and they were very successful at it, too! And they lived a happy life in Big Woods forever more, always appreciative for Ma's sacrifice.
The End.

If you'd like a closer look at our owl family

lol.. the mom's hooters shirt gives it a special touch... the only thing to criticize is the window.. to me, it seems to stand out more than the owls since the outline is thicker..other than that, good design. ;)

I think this would sell really well as a kids t-shirt but only if you took the Hooters off the mother's top.

Yeah. She shouldn't be wearing a Hooters shirt. You'd run into copyright issues anyways. It would be a great kid's shirt. Textures and everything make it really awesome. Plus, she doesn't work there anymore, why is she wearing the shirt?

thanks for the comments guys, just wanted to explain some stuff---the text is not part of the submission, and as for the hooters shirt, i really felt it was necessary for what i was aiming for. i wanted to mimic the children's book illustrations from childhood, but i wanted to insert something "out of place"/the antithesis of a children's book motif. I personally feel if i were to remove the hooters shirt, the design would just be a basic (albeit, quaint) scene with no message; and i really didnt want to to a straightforward copy of whats already been done. on the other hand, i'm sure i could of accomplished this in a different way minus the hooters shirt, but oh well, and since i designed this with 5 colors i don't think i can resubmit it now that the 5+5+5 contest is over. thanks again!

the hooter's shirt is bad and takes away from the rest of the design. if you wanted to add an odd element, you'd have to have more than one thing that is out of place. besides the shirt, you've got an incredibly strong sub.

I think this shirt is hooty cutey, and I understand you wanted to throw in something different with the Hooter's shirt, which was rather amusing to me. On the "I don't think I can resubmit it now" point, I thought the 5 unique colours were staying around...?

awesome possum, though I have to say I don't like the hooters shirt, quite simply because I don't support them in any way. Sorry to be repetitive. $5

Haha. I vote no on the Hooters shirt. I wouldnt wear a shirt that even implies such a degrading place.

So pretty, but I don't really think the Hooters thing was necessary. There are plenty of other 'out of place' elements you could have used.

Pink Apple, thanks, i didnt realize the 5 color thing was a permanent feature. wow, there's definitely a consensus of hate for the hooters idea, even though i agree with everyone in that i hate that restaurant (in my story, it is in the "dark and dangerous" section of Big Woods afterall!). I definitely did not intend to "support" that place when making this design.

Wonderful illustration, and I love your style! I actually thought the Hooters reference was pretty funny... since it's on an owl. But if people don't like it, you could try another owl reference such as Tootsie Roll pops.

lose the hooters shirt, as funny as it is. I think this is totally awesome as a drawing, but a little busy for a tee.

I like the illustration, but I don't like the "message" you said you're wanting to send. At least, I don't like how you're trying to send it. It just makes it look needlessly classless, and not something I'd personally want to have on my chest. I get that that is all part of your "message," I just think it basically ruins what would otherwise be a nice looking design. It seems like there could be other ways of adding something unexpected to a somewhat traditional illustration, that would be a little less vulgar and, well, unoriginal. How many times have we seen lame Hooters/owls jokes? Again, that is probably the whole point, I just think if it is... It's kind of a lame point.

The Hooters shirt is funny and a nice touch to the design, but sorry, I just wouldn't want to wear a shirt with that on it. You have to be careful what you wear on your shirt because people will judge you by it...

nah, i still think the hooters shirt is out of context. it's all about fantasy for me. he's reading local news from the forest. she's making rat soup or whatever. it's not so much a feminist reason why i don't like the hooters thing. i mean, the stereotypes are obvious anyway. i'd just rather see the mom as a housewife than a minimum wage working teenager.
