This comes from a scene in Othello by William Shakespeare and is for the Joy of Text Competition. See my profile for detailed version

"Forsooth, a great arithmetician,
One Michael Cassio, a Florentine,
A fellow almost damn'd in a fair wife;
That never set a squadron in the field,
Nor the division of a battle knows
More than a spinster; unless the bookish theoric,
Wherein the toged consuls can propose
As masterly as he: mere prattle, without practise,
Is all his soldiership. But he, sir, had the election:
And I, of whom his eyes had seen the proof
At Rhodes, at Cyprus and on other grounds
Christian and heathen, must be be-lee'd and calm'd
By debitor and creditor: this counter-caster,
He, in good time, must his lieutenant be,
And I--God bless the mark!--his Moorship's ancient."

Lovely design though. $5

dude, it's Othello, it's not emo, just because TBS and other bands took the phrase and used it for their music doesn't make it emo, this is classical literature

I love it, the quote is awesome...but part of the reason I want it so bad is because I have a heart tattooed on my wrist, so I always wear my heart on my sleeve =)

not a fan of center aligned text or the paintbrush tool.

that said, if you boost the quantity of gray (used in the background text) this would be pretty good

I didn't know this was up for scoring! I was going to change a few things and resub it. I still might.

The mistake I made was not making all the I's capital.. but I was thinking of taking the main section of text that you can read and writing it out in cursive and then resubbing it. What do you think?
mindtrance
mindtrance on Dec 20 '06
that reminds me... the other mistake I made in the sub was the text in the first comment you read... it's meant to be a different section of text posted as the first comment on here. Threadless didn't get to it in time to take it out of the running.

I really want to change the text to cursive so it looks more like a handwritten letter, the font in the back would be as it is.

The text it was taken from and exactly what's on the shirt is this:

" Do themselves homage: these fellows have some soul;
And such a one do I profess myself. For, sir,
It is as sure as you are Roderigo,
Were I the Moor, I would not be Iago:
In following him, I follow but myself;
Heaven is my judge, not I for love and duty,
But seeming so, for my peculiar end:
For when my outward action doth demonstrate
The native act and figure of my heart
In compliment extern, 'tis not long after
But I will wear my heart upon my sleeve
For daws to peck at: I am not what I am."

Love it, I agree with the heart being a little too jarring. As well would love it if instead of writting "shakespeare" you would write it as "Othello Act...Scene..."

But with this in mind would still buy it

It gives me chills, baby it is that good! Very well done - i likethe heart too. this would also look good on red and I request that! - - - -The term wear my heart on my sleeve is a very old term - so the emo debate is once again another tiring thing. What is wrong with emo? and emotion? Shakespeare seemed to like it?

I would prefer the heart on the top of the sleeve, rather than on the wrist--that way it could be short sleeved, too.

I would also probably move the main design higher up towards the right shoulder. The text is good in any font, I think, as long as you can read it easily.

But I absolutely LOVE this shirt. I like the red heart, too. I LIKE the fact that it's jarring. It's artistic and catching.

Oh, you've totally won over the lit geek in me. I $5-ed this, but I'd like the design higher up on the shoulder too- it'd be hard to read on my bod otherwise. I like the red heart! Nice work.

seriously - thank you for the feedback! If this gets printed I'm going to do the suggestions you've mentioned. I like the heart on the detailed version in my blog a lot better too.

Any preference on the font vs. cursive?

so usually i read through everyone else's replies, then add my two cents...couldn't wait this time,...this is phenominal! i love it,absolutely 5$ and i don't even buy stuff online normally.

one suggestion though - that line always made me think a little higher up on the sleeve, like it might have slipped down from the shoulder, a place where the whole world can see it... like on the side of the upper arm rather than down by the cuff.

Seriously, this is possibly one of the best designs I've seen on threadless (not insulting other designers btw, most of you guys are amazing).

I found this t-shirt because I thought I had a great idea for a design, but before I messed around with creating one, I did a quick google search for "heart on my sleeve, threadless" and this, along with a couple of others, came up. I like to think my attempt could have beaten the other two, but the execusion of this design is amazing. I like it the way it is aswell, the cursive is unnecessary, its perfect as is.

TallPaul_
TallPaul_ on Dec 29 '07
Ok, so don't know why I'm still commenting on a t-shirt that hasn't been printed, and that was subbed a year ago, but still, if you go in to business producing this t-shirt, can you put the heart on the upper arm like someone else mentioned...

oh... and if you do produce it... could you tell me about it as well so I can buy one. Hell, I'd buy 7, one for every day.
