The gray helps the crane stand out but I do wish it had more to do with the composition and centered would make me happier.

okay, some people are confused. my guess would be they haven't heard the album/song this was inspired by. the "gray thing" in the background is the sillouhette of an island. the bird is a crane, and yes, the red represents blood.
listen to "come and see/the island/you'll not feel the drowning" from the decemberists newest album (the crane wife), and it will all make sense. sort of.
