About my design

by colin_greenwood
Second sub, first sub in a long time. I think it looks decent, but I'm looking for some solid critique, since I have lots to learn. The file above is messed up because the line weights aren't proportioned.

That's how it's supposed to look. Thanks.

I don't quite undestand why you couldn't submit it how it's supposed to look? but to be honest they are all very similar anyway, I think I actually prefr the way it looks on the T-shirt rathe than the thinner lines of your submission and other image.

ithe design on the shirt with the chunky shapes is pretty cool.

it looks like the line paths got smaller, but the stroke on the lines stayed the same...you can kinda tell that the lines are the same thickness in all images, but just not as long cuz the paths are shortened...does that make sense? i'm not a fan of random perpendicular lines anyway. there isn't much for me here.

i dont know why but i love this. its different.

Eh, this isn't nearly as random as it's accused of being, but whatever. When I scaled it down for the sub, the line weights remained the same while the line lengths shrunk, so the lines are proportionally incorrect. But there it is.

I must be missing something here, because to me, it looks like you just made a bunch of lines using a rectangle-tool in some art program. I don't see any effort in this at all.

I agree with Percival the kitten eater: It reminds me of using the rectangle tool in MS Paint when I was learning to use a computer as a child. No vote from me.

personally i'm not a fan of shape shirts. makes me feel like i'm wearing a screen saver. but hey, whatever.

Finally, a shirt that isn't some stupid joke or overly cutesy. Though both designs are pretty good, I acually like the one on the shirt a lot better, it has a bit more substance, ya know?

MS Paint rectangles for the bored

It looks like a bunch of rectangles (because it is), but you can tell there's some sort of element of thought behind it based on how it's organized.

I prefer the design version rather than the one shown on the shirt...

Well, I have a Mac, thus no MS Paint, and I used Illustrator, so, a little more complex than the rectangle tool. There's a lot more to this design than random placement. I had a purpose and a goal, and I don't really feel like explaining the meaning because it's just not really any fun, but you can assign your own if you want. Every time I look at the full size one it makes me happy. So that's a good thing.

ha... everyone in our design office agrees that it is bullshit, you cannot make something for the masses to wear and have a hidden deep meaning, if you want to make art for yourself do it but present in the correct medium. I don't necessarily like seeing 800 zillion skull tshirts or cutsie animals either but come on.  Post the meaning/thought process so us unintelligent peons can have some in site into your deep artistic mind.  I guess 5 years of design school and 4 years of professional experience has made me out of touch with inner artist such as yourself. ( "Congrats on living this long!" all 19 years.  I had a purpose and a goal, and I don't really feel like explaining the meaning because it's just not really any fun, but you can assign your own if you want.)

Hope you don't ever want to make it in the design world. Because that half ass response won't cut it.  Artist that cant explain themselves are a dime a dozen.

Sorry, used to being in places where everybody's 13 and when you make something that looks good to your professor (I'm currently an industrial design student) and then some kid thinks it looks like crap, you just think to yourself, go to hell, idiot. So there's that.

I was inspired mostly by the color palette of Radiohead's OK Computer, except mine's much darker, whereas the cover is much lighter. The meaning here? Well, it always feels corny putting your thoughts onto something as anonymous and shallow as a comment page, but whatever. I was tooling around with economy of line. All I've been taught all this semester is economy, economy, economy. Like, not financial economics, but actual economics, the art of minimalism. That got old, using 3 shapes to create a composition, so I decided to use economy in a different sense, using only two angles to create an entire piece. It was also really interesting to me to see the different ways the design worked out each time it was shrunk down. Your highlights and your focus points change, and I think the part most effected is the negative space, which I think is strongest on the large version that I have a link to in my first comment. My least favorite of the 3 presented is the medium sized one. Too much white and all of my favorite elements have been killed.

Traffic Patterns for the Lost isn't really the most apt title, I just kind of threw it on for kicks since I couldn't give the actual meaning in 5 words or so. This shirt is about the shortness and abrubtness of life, emphasized by the fact that we only look out for eachother, staying on our one track and never reaching out. It's kind of a cynical view, but hey, I live in America, and 99% of people would rather make sure their own life is in order than take any time to help another person out. The color takes away from the meaning but adds to the design. Meaning-wise, I would have preferred it best with either white on black or black on white, but the color is used to give the design depth and appeal, since I do have to appeal to my audience here, and I think they'd like it better with color than without. It does look rather striking in only black and white, however.

So that's both a long and short explanation of it, because I have more to say but none of it's important enough to keep going on with. I prefer working in 2D. All of my 3D composotions I've recently turned in have looked pretty shoddy, so tooling in illustrator for threadless is a lot more fun than tooling with balsa wood and foam core for my class.
