It's funny and very well drawn, but it's kind of offensive. Trust me, Asian people do eat weird things, but they don't try to pretend it's something else. Plus, who would actually go through all the trouble of finding or paying for pets?

Someone explain to me how saying dog meat is found in some oriental food is offensive ? I know people have tried to offend others by saying this, but that doesn't mean it is offensive. People have tried to offend me by saying I eat grits. I LOVE grits ! It doesn't offend me at all. There might be some cultural angle I'm missing. If that's the case, then someone please spell it out instead of declaring it offensive without any explanation.

why is the hot dog mooing?
helo
helo on Nov 27 '06
Dog meat is used in the food in China. Click on the link and scroll 2/3 the way down the page ( or Ctrl + F for the search function and type in dog ). You'll see that the second meat listed is dog. The article is from 1977 though. ---- This Chinese food webpage claims the second meal pictured includes dog meat. ---- An article at snopes.com states, "Though the Chinese have been known to dine on cats or dogs in their homeland, it's not a widespread practice and by many reports remains limited to certain far-flung backwards regions." This can be found halfway into the article.
akatookey
akatookey on Nov 27 '06

helo
helo on Nov 27 '06
laurelxcore, The hot dog is also mooing because "Today’s hot dogs are made of quality lean cuts of beef and pork blended with a variety of spices and seasonings, and then fully cooked, much in the same way that sausages are made." I found this answer at Berk's Frequently Asked Questions to this question : 1. What's in a hot dog?

Frenchi
Frenchi on Nov 27 '06
Yes, it's obviously a joke, but to the people who look at it differently, the situation might end up in an altercation. Unless the guy is being serious... then someone will definitely end up with a broken bone. Anyhoo, my rebuttal to helo is: if Chinese food was really made out of dog, in America, would people eat it? I'm assuming they won't. Soooo, people know that the other foods contain the substances they contain, and people eat it anyway. I might imagine that hot dogs contain pig intestines, and knowing that, I'll still inhale it with some ketchup and mustard. But if I knew that Chinese food contained dog, or a cat, or a horse, or mice, I reeeaaaallly don't think I'd even look at it. I take that back. I'd probably poke at it, grimace, then vomit, but I for sure won't let that touch my integument.
And that is why some people are offended by this shirt. =) I'm not saying I'm offended, just giving my input to why other people may be.
Echan
Echan on Nov 27 '06
er, not Asian, but have been dubbed an honorary one by Asian friends, if that counts for anything. I agree with those who have said that while I'm not offended, some people might be. I don't know if that's reason enough not to print a funny shirt though.

mauvaischampignon
mauvaischampignon on Nov 28 '06
My first reaction was negative, but I think that it's actually good commentary on making people realize that we actually kill and eat other animals, especially making people think about the fact that in other cultures they would eat a dog, cat, monkey or other such cute, fuzzy animal, but they would never eat the cows that we treat so horribly. I think that this particular insight would be lost on the average person, however, so it might come off as racist, or no one would take anything from it at all and it would just end up a waste of space. I like it, but I don't think it's for the same reasons that anyone else does. Whether it was intentional or not, kudos.

helo
helo on Nov 28 '06
to Frenchi, It appears you're saying that some who eat Chinese food would be offended by this design since they believe dog meat is too nasty to be eaten. They are thinking, " Decent people eat decent food and avoid what is nasty, but this design is implying that the Chinese food I like is something nasty." Based on what you've said I can see how someone would be offended. Thanks for helping me see that. I personally don't see dog meat as being such a base substance that it reaches the level of being able to offend/insult me like feces or urine would, but that doesn't mean others aren't offended. I'm just surprised that someone could even be offended by it. I haven't had any. But who knows, I might really like it.
helo
helo on Nov 28 '06
dog meat, I mean. not feces or urine ! -- just to be clear :D
Jooliesays
Jooliesays on Nov 28 '06
To Big Ed, I am pretty sure that if something is true, then most people wouldn't see it as a slur.
Maybe the hot dog could also neigh? Just to point out that some traditional foods from other cultures are also viewed as negative or embarrassing.
There is a horse butcher shop in the market near my house. My ex boyfriend told me that horse meat tastes very strong, but is recommended for kids since it has a high iron content.

Would it be considered racist if it was the burger saying woof woof? would people be saying its racisit to suggest americans eat dog. I think not. By taking offence to it you are fueling the steriotype and creating the difference between culture which creates racism.

Korea is generally more well-known for dining on dog meat. It's quite a bit more expensive than other meats and generally it's more of a "to do" to go out and have dog for dinner. I lived and worked in Korea for a year and some of my older co-workers always tried to get me to go out with them for some but I really wasn't down with it. Bottom line for me is: this shirt is funny, but I relate dog meat to Koreans, not Chinese. BTW now that I'm living in Italy, I have to avoid the horse meat section in the grocery store. Not racial, not stereotyping, but true.

well i'm chinese and i don't necessarily find it offensive per se, but what puzzles me is that it's such a widespread belief that the chinese eat dog. haha it's like basically take the small animal that americans love most and just frame the chinese as slaughterers of that animal. i guess there is dog-eating but it's definitely not as popular/pervasive in the culture as people think it is ... i guess not enough so that this "joke" would work? i don't know .. what other animals does "chinese food" (aka americanized fake stuff in little white take-out boxes) have that could go on the shirt?

I've only heard of cat in chinese food, and just to let people know, it's not a "slur" of any sort. That people take offense at something that is true, just because they think the base idea is disgusting, and therefor instantly offensive to the cultures that openly embrace it.

Most importantly though, the hatching works well and your choice of color is nice. This is also funny, and great for the theme of this contest. Good luck.

i think since no one can agree if the old saying was cat or dog in chinese food, it can both woof and meow to racket the hilarity factor up. plus the hot dog needs to be saying like five things since we all know it's made of so many unnamed and rare species an entirte shirt could be dedicated to just its noises alone! You could even add in the artificial element to the hot dog with some "beep boop bop" sound effects. I don't think this is offensive unless political correctness as overtaken actual fact nowadays...i think it unfortunatly has. 5 and buy. great work.

From most of the comments I read, I think Asian people would be offended by this shirt because they believe that other people would take this as the truth about that community. And mainly because eating domesticated house pets is gross, I'm assuming a majority of the population think the same way, so many Chinese people do not want to have a negative connotation in that way. And for the record, I personally don't know any Asians in any country that eat dogs. So for the people who think this is the truth; get a larger sample size. ah, whatever.
Otherwise, I do like the colors of the shirt. =)

and besides, people in western cultures eat cute animals, such as horses, little birds, lambs, piglets, rabbits etc.etc. In farm households little chickens or hens or roosters or lambs or cows can have names, but they still get eaten. In many other cultures people eat insects too, and we in the west eat oysters and snails.

I get the impression that the Chinese who see this aren't offended, but the non-Asians seem to think it's "racist". Interesting, that. I believe I did have a dog meat (or something like it) hamburger when I visited Beijing, it was truly awful whatever it was... but it wasn't beef. I think the design dances on uncomfortable territory because it plays on non-Asian perceptions of Asian culture, which is true anyway in certain respects, but it's played for comedy here. It's not bad, but I suppose it all depends on the attitude of the wearer of the shirt... :)
