I open the door; beacons of light illuminate the enveloping darkness, all black. Steps are taken forward, and an intense cold collides into my body, my breathing shortens. Soon I see light passing me by and eventually turning into black. The asphalt beneath me turns to dirt, rocks sliding as my feet pound the earth. Calm settles over me, the dark soothing. The stress of life begins to fall off, piece by piece. I take a deep breath; a sharp pain inside my lungs. Running slows, from the unwanted intrusion. Seconds later I am back to the rhythmic beat of foot and heart. A trace falls over me. Eyes now acclimated to the dark, to the black, make out faint silhouettes of houses and signs, of corn and trees. Suddenly a bright light, a car coming toward me. Without thought I move to the side and shut my eyes. Soon the bright disturbance passes and I am back to my trace. Breathing becomes heavier as I turn around, as I turn back toward home. This road, this path, it is all familiar, never changing and never moving. The sweat on my head now turned to ice. My eyebrows are stiff and my hair cracks with every flying step. There are more lights now, more cars. They whizz me now, each time blinding my eyes and destroying my peace. Everything is reversing, dirt to asphalt, dark into day. I near my home, my den. Houses all around stirring, turning into light and into sound. My pace slows as well as my breathing, and my heart. Soon I walk, the path well remembered. My house follows the rest and awakens. I near the door and look behind me, the sun peaks up behind the houses. Once more I continue walking, and I open the door. Warmth and smells great me, the beckon me to come in. I walk on in, past the parents, and past the smells, up into my room. I sigh and acknowledge that the day must continue. I willingly accept the fact knowing it will all eventually go away.
