Inspired by Kelsi's blog I have, like a month later because I'm lazy, made you some mixes conveniently arranged according to your favourite genre! Warning: genre descriptions are vague and arbitrary.

I made seven. But for now, you get five. Urban can go up tomorrow and I'm still trying to define and refine exactly what a modern classic is. But really, all this stuff is from the past two years or so. And so that last mix will include bands that are still around but put out the best example of their stuff a little longer ago. Not that I'm in any way suggesting they're past their prime.

Every year, the radio station Triple J does a Hottest 100 songs of the year and we get to vote for the songs we think are the best of that year. Every ten years or so as a celebration of the anniversary of the Hottest 100 I guess, they also do a Hottest 100 of All Time. It was on the radio a few weeks ago, but now they're playing the videos on Rage, our music video show so it got me thinking.

So what would your vote be for best song of all time?

And, is it the most-played song on your iTunes or whatever program you use that can give you those stats?

The Official Countdown

and easier to read list on Wikipedia

Some info I found interesting but you don't need to read:

It was criticised a bit for being very much a Generation X kind of list. Lots of 90s were in the top twenty and a lot of "classics." But this is to be expected because the kids listen to the classics too.

The highest placed song from the 00s was The Nosebleed Section by the Hilltop Hoods. And there were only two songs from the past year. Sex on Fire by Kings of Leon, which won this year's regular poll and Skinny Love by Bon Iver and they were both in the 90s.

Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana was predictably number 1. The first few Hottest 100s twenty years ago were also of all time. The first was won by Throw Your Arms Around Me by Hunters and Collectors but was eventually knocked off by Smells Like Teen Spirit. Ten Years Ago when they did the last Hottest 100 of all time, Throw Your Arms Around Me was still at number 2, but this year, it slipped all the way back to number 24.

Radiohead's second-highest placed song was Creep. So suck on that, Radiohead. (Although it was their highest last time.)
