So, I am married, have been married for some time, to a great guy who also happens to be Jewish. I am not. I grew up on a farm in central IL and met him at college. My family (and his) were accepting and everything has been ok. However, it's like over the past few years they've gotten ok with being racist in front of him. To the point that my brother even said someone "jewed him down" in front of my hubby. I was really angry about that and my brother did apologize, but still. My parents also insist that we have dinner at their house every sunday night which is kind of boring but we go along with it... except that my dad keeps saying racist stuff about asian drivers, black people, and derogatory remarks about women and gays, and my brother goes along with it. It makes both of us (husband and i) mega uncomfortable. My dad was sorta like that when I was growing up but my mom was really against it and I guess I thought they stopped saying things like that... until they got comfortable? I don't know where I came from because no where in my mind would I EVER think it was ok to say things like that. I am pretty liberal leaning and I also teach high school with kids of many different backgrounds so I doubly would never ever think like that.

Anyways, I have said something to my mom about it before, but it just keeps getting worse, to the point where I would rather live in another state than have to listen to that crap every sunday. What do? Just say, if your BS doesn't stop then you don't see us anymore? I already don't fit in with my family as they are kinda religious right wingers and I am an agnostic liberal sort. Plus, even if they didn't act like that I don't really want to see them EVERY week, it's boring and we have nothing in common. gah.]]> Mon, 05 Mar 2012 21:53:32 -0600
